Love to exercise? Check your fingers
Have you heard of palm reading? Who knows if that's real or not... but researchers seem to be finding a lot of telling information from a surprising source: The length of fingers. First, Jacki told us how the length of your ring finger can affect your arthritis risk, now researchers are saying that the ratio between your digit (second) finger and ring (fourth) finger may be related to your desire to exercise.
The study, conducted by American and Canadian researchers, compared the activity levels of normal mice and selectively bred mice. The more active mice showed a difference in finger length.
Can you spot an edible aphrodisiac?
I've heard that the oyster is an aphrodisiac -- you know, an agent that arouses sexual desire. But Women's Health tells me it really isn't -- unless your man is able to down 50 of them all at one time. Then, it might just increase his libido. What about a banana? I've certainly never heard that this fruit can do the trick. But WH says it can. It's not just the shape that is suggestive, though. Eating this healthy fruit can give your sex life a boost with its powerful potassium and B vitamins -- both are nutrients essential to sexual hormone production. What about red wine, chocolate, cinnamon, chili peppers, pomegranate, and asparagus? I'm not telling. But I will send you over to this quiz where you can test your sexy smarts on these foods and more. As it turns out, I'm not so fit when it comes to spotting sensual foods. Maybe you'll do better. Let us know.
Jumpstart Your Fitness: By taking a new angle on goals
Does your fitness or dieting plan need a jumpstart? Why? Obviously you've stalled, or hit a wall, or fallen into a rut, or whatever, but what is it that makes you want to break free and get moving again? What are you trying to achieve? Considering your goal and refocusing yourself is one way to get motivated again, but if that isn't doing the trick try this slight variation: name 5 things your current weight or fitness level is preventing you from doing. Your goal may be to lose 25 pounds, but a list of things you'd like to do may have goals on it like wearing a certain size jeans, looking great for a specific event, or doing something physical like rock climbing or kayaking. By naming specific things that you want to do when you're thinner/healthier you can rejuvenate your spirit and inspiration, and get the focus shifted off the scale and more onto your life. So what are 5 things that you can (and will!) do when you reach your goal that you can't do now? And just how bad do you want those things?
The power of desire affects our choices
Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements
According to a new study, when we want something badly, the power of our desire can sometimes lead us to make strange, uncharacteristic choices. So if you've ever found yourself starving at a restaurant and ordering the double bacon cheeseburger with cheese fries, even though you were originally craving sushi and don't even like burgers, bacon or fries, there's a reason behind it. Your food cravings made you do it.
On the other hand, if you're turned off by food at the moment you decide what you eat, you tend to make more 'safe' choices. This makes sense -- it explains why we turn to comfort foods when we're feeling down.
Still, choosing things that we normally wouldn't isn't necessarily a bad thing ... it's good to add variety to your life every now and then. But take a moment to think about your choices -- especially the big ones.
