Methodone-related deaths increase in the U.S.
When the abuse of a drug abuse drug begins to happen, is all hope lost? Those that are being for substance abuse with methodone are dying in record numbers. What's happening? They're abusing it.A report from the U.S. Justice Department this week concluded that record numbers are dying from methodone, with deaths jumping from 786 eight years ago to over 3,800 in 2004.
And, deaths from cocaine use increased also (one of the opiates methodone is used to treat), from 3,822 in 1999 to over 5,400 in 2004. And then, this statement comes out: methodone is safe and effective when prescribed and used correctly, but is deadly when misused --"particularly in combination with other prescription drugs, alcohol, or illicit drugs."
Wait a minute -- isn't methodone used to treat addiction of illicit drugs? The war on drugs (which existed mostly on paper and on the tongues of politicians) was never won, yes?
Herbal-based sex pills could harbor hidden dangers
Viagra has been around for quite some time as a sexual aid for men. But there are dangers with use that make the product not suitable for use by some.
As such, many herbal alternatives have been released and marketed to take advantage of this shortfall -- but they, too, could cause problems according to new research.
If you're on common heart and blood-pressure drugs, taking one of these herbal-based sex pills could lead to a stroke or even death, according to the research. Why? Well, these products may just contain unregulated versions of the very pharmaceuticals they are supposed to replace. Therein lies the wrinkle -- reactions inside that body that can lead to serious health consequences.

You Are What You Eat: Refined sugar, oh sweet poison
Each week, we'll be offering original recipes and unique ways to use those Super Foods that pack nutritional power. After all, you are what you eat -- make it count!Today we take a bit of a detour from highlighting healthy foods to remind you why eating sugar is not such a fabulous idea.
My family and I went to a fair today, a seasonal activity not to be missed here in New England. However, evil lurks at every corner at these fairs. Sprinkled in amidst the animal shows, cattle barn and spinning demonstration (and I mean yarn, not the exercise craze) are food booths. Lots and lots of food booths.
So by the time we left the fair, we had partaken in myriads of junk food, from the sugary-sweet Kettle Corn to soft-serve ice cream. Dinner out left my toddler sucking down Jello for dessert at a local buffet, so his day was completely shot.
Mind you, we are not people who ever eat refined sugar, and I really mean never. How did our systems react, you ask?
