What other countries can teach us about healthy living

Americans have a long lifespan, on average, but as this article points out, that's more down to fancy medicines than actual healthy living. There seems to be this worldwide cliche of Americans being unhealthy and generally obese, and if you travel often, you'll know that it's kind of true -- we do eat more and we are lazier.

So maybe it's time that we look to other countries for healthy living inspiration. Here's where we can find it, according to Dr. Oz:
  • In Costa Rica, they eat fruit ever day
  • In Sardinia, the wine has 10 times more antioxidants than other wines
  • In India, curry spices ward off dementia and Alzheimer's
  • In Okinawa, Japan, they drink tea instead of coffee. And they only ever eat until they're 80% full
  • In Turkey, Kefir (a form of yogurt) is a regular par of the diet, providing lots of healthy antibiotics.
What healthy habits have you learned from other cultures?

Freaky foods that are fit for Halloween ... or are they?

In honour of halloween I'm going to make a list of ingredients fit for a scary witch's stew with help from this article from eDiets. Be forewarned; they might scare the bejebus out of you:
  • Beef lips, innards and joints.
  • Ground horse bones
  • Biscuits made of science-lab chemicals
  • Curdled milk and bacteria cultures
Sounds gross, right? Well, surprise. These are all items that are part of a normal diet. Beef lips? Found in hot dogs and processed meats. Ground horse bones? That's jello for you. And the cookies and crackers at your grocery stores are made almost entirely of chemicals. Cheese is made from curdled milk and bacteria cultures.

My point is not to freak you out or keep you away from these things -- I believe that cheese, for instance, can be part of a healthy diet. But it's important to know what you put into your body ... in all it's grossness. Eat organic when possible and learn about you're food; afterall, you are what you eat!

Eating disorders often overlooked in boys

There appears to be a gap in the health care system (ha! one among many...) when it comes to identifying eating disorders in boys and some ethnic groups. Obviously, boys and some foreign cultures don't display the same behaviors and symptoms as the "white females" the system was designed for, and so these patients inevitably "fall through the cracks." One example is the fact that doctors and clinicians are trained to pay special attention when patients express an interest in being "thin," but most boys will instead say things along the lines of "fit" and "healthy," and those terms don't set off the same alarms.

So it's pretty obvious at this point that some of the training in this area needs closer examination and perhaps even a complete overhaul. As news about the rising obesity epidemic in this country continues, the pressure for our children will only get worse.

Daily Fit Tip: Eat yogurt

Yogurt seems to "fly under the radar" I think when it comes to health foods and good solid nutritional choices. Although lots of people do eat it regularly it rarely gets talked about or pops up in the headlines, so for many it's easy to space it off when you're grocery shopping.

Yogurt tastes good, comes pre-packed and easy to serve, and is packed with health benefits. Yogurt will help you fight off osteoporosis with high levels of calcium and vitamin D, it may reduce your risk of high blood pressure, it will help with your gastrointestinal health by providing necessary natural bacteria, and it can even help you feel generally fuller and more satisfied.

See the article for even more on the benefits of yogurt, plus some tips and a handy chart on how to buy the best.
