Our Couches Are Killing Us

How can you solve the major health problems America faces? Start by getting off the couch.

Get off the couch to fight cancer

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

If you don't want cancer, you've got to get off the couch. Now, I don't promise you won't get cancer if you change your couch-potato ways -- I got cancer and never was a couch girl myself -- but this one simple step will at least offer you some protection against the disease we all want to keep at bay.

Don't worry, you don't have to work up much of a sweat in your fight against cancer. Simply moving will do the trick. Sure, a hard-core run works but so does a round of golf. Or a walk with your pooch. Or a game of kickball in the back yard with your kids. Any type of physical activity will do -- as long as it's not done while reclining on the couch. Jumping on your couch might work, though.

No one knows for sure why exercise is a cancer butt-kicker. Maybe it's the inflammation and stress-fighting powers physical activity delivers. It doesn't matter why it works, really. It just works. So get walking, dancing, hiking, raking, mowing, and more. Just move.

ER's Linda Cardellini works out strategically

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

My home treadmill has a strategic location -- right smack dab in my kids' playroom so I can work out and watch my boys play at the same time. ER actress Linda Cardellini has a strategic spot for her exercise equipment too.

"I have an elliptical machine at my house that I placed between the kitchen and the couch," Cardellini tells Good Housekeeping in the June 2008 magazine. "So I can't sit there and eat bonbons on the couch -- I've got to get up and work out."

Got a strategy for your workout routine? Feel free to tell all.

Where do you eat? At the table or on the couch?

Healthy Kids, Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements

I recently saw a poll that offered what I believe to be startling results. The poll asked Where do you usually eat dinner? The clear frontrunner, with 47% of the votes, was the couch or a favourite chair. In second place was the dining table with 33% of the votes.

I'll admit, I usually eat at the couch, but I am a 20-something workaholic living in an apartment where my dining table doubles as my desk. Also, my family here consists of a live-in boyfriend with a very different schedule than mine and a cat. If I had kids, I would insist that we eat dinner at the table, just as my family did every night for my entire upbringing -- which is why I think these results are kind of sad. Eating at a table with my family is one of the things I miss most now that I'm out on my own -- dinner time was a chance to catch up, no matter how busy each of us was. Don't families still eat at the table? Where do you eat dinner?

Eat on the couch much? The Sofa Hanger can help

Reviews & Products

Eating on the couch is one of the worst habits you can have if you're trying to be healthy, so when I saw this "Sofa Hanger" my first thought was along the lines of 'what not to do.' But in truth there are lots of ways this could actually help, instead of hurt, your 'be healthy' efforts. If you have one you might be more likely to keep a glass of water at hand while you read a book or relax with friends (hydration is important!), or (like in the picture) having healthy snacks can be a good thing by helping you avoid hunger pangs and binges later.

This could be one of those "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" situations -- just make sure you join 'em on your own terms!
