I've been hearing a fair bit about so-called healthy video games lately, but I have to wonder -- is there such a thing? If you're sat in front of the computer or TV, you're not burning calories or getting active no matter how many healthy things the game might teach you.

But here's a video game with a twist: The Incredible Adventures of the Amazing Food Detective teaches kids about healthy eating a exercise, and here's the catcher: it turns off if you play it for more than 20 minutes, and it won't turn back on again for at least 60 minutes.

I think this is an awesome idea, and something that all kids' video games should do to get kids moving. Of course, it should be the parents' job to make sure their kids are getting active, but I think some parents might be slacking in this regard, so it's nice to see a video game take the initiative. One healthy way to age gracefully is to keep that brain working as hard and long as possible each day. Cutting out hours of mind-numbing television shows in favor of brain workouts is probably a good idea for many of us at any age, but especially if you're over the 50 hump or even if you're just retired.

Last Friday, a new report stated that training the brain with a computer workout program may be better than computer games at staving off age-related mental decline. These newer computer "workouts" are from classic game makers like Nintendo and Mattel -- and they are based on studies showing that with a little training, older people can improve their brain power.

If this a hot new area on terms of game publishing? If the gaming industry really wants to tap a whole new marketplace beyond kids and twenty-somethings, this may be a great way to do that.
