Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

There might be a plethora of sport drink options on the market, but some athletes still aren't hydrating properly. This is true in all sports and at every level, but it's particularly a problem in high school football. Last year, heat stroke was the cause of death for four young football players -- but it's preventable.

That's Fit had a chance to talk to about hydration with Matthew Stafford, former Georgia Bulldog and current Detroit Lions quarterback after going #1 in the 2009 NFL draft. Having grown up in Texas and played college football in the South, Stafford has always been cognizant of the importance of getting enough water. He's now taking part in a joint effort between Gatorade and the NFL called Beat the Heat.

That's Fit: Have you had any scares or personal experience with severe dehydration?

MS:
I had never really cramped or had a problem, and then, when [Georgia] was playing South Carolina, I cramped up so badly. I had both legs going at the same time -- it was scary, I couldn't even walk. I realized then how important it is to not just hydrate during the game, but before.

800,000 eggs consumed at Athletic Village

Nutrition & Supplements

Not only will the combined competitors, coaches, and staff at the Summer Games be consuming 800,000 eggs, they'll also be throwing down more than one million apples, 936,000 bananas, 312,000 oranges, and 684,000 carrots. Courtesy of the Olympic food provider Aramark, here's what else the group dining at the Beijing Athletic Village will be ingesting.

  • 93,000 pounds of seafood
  • 260,000 pounds of meat
  • 38,000 pounds of pasta (dry)
  • 134,000 pounds of rice (dry)
  • 70,000 gallons of milk
  • 400,000 boxes of cereal

In total, 28,000 Olympic folks will eat 3.5 million meals. Now, that's a lot of food. Fortunately, most of the crew will be burning their fair share of calories.

Coaches fought cancer this weekend

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

A bunch of NCAA basketball coaches and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) declared war on cancer this past weekend by partnering with the American Cancer Society for Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration that empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

The Coaches vs. Cancer concept, spearheaded in 1993, has led to programs such as basketball tournaments in November and Suits and Sneakers -- coaches nationwide were encouraged to wear sneakers with their suits while coaching this weekend to remind fans about eating right, exercising, and making healthy lifestyle choices. There are boutique shopping events in April, golf invitationals in June, and Referres vs. Cancer, a fundraising campaign that began this weekend and concludes with a presentation at the Final Four.

Thanks to the NABC and everyone who has helped since this program's inception to raise $40 million in direct revenue for the American Cancer Society's. Score!
