New U.S.-based research states that silicone breast implants really don't increase the risk of various cancers of tissue diseases, contrary to beliefs that leaking or damaged implants can lead to health complications if not removed.

The newest research looked at more than 12 studies with an implant and breast cancer angle and saw no evidence of breast cancer increases when silicone implants were present, along with the incidence of other cancers too.

Although saline-filled implants have taken over a good portion of the market for silicone implants, the research went as far as saying children born to women with silicone implants saw no issues (birth defects, etc.) as well.

I'll admit, I always wondered if this was possible.

A woman who had her breasts artificially enlarged was walking through a field in Taiwan when one of her boobs was stung by a bee. It wasn't until two days later that she noticed the breast was looking a little...deflated. So she went to the doctor, who told her that the bee must have punctured the salt-water bag concealed within her chest, allowing all the water to slowly leak out.

Eww, gross.

What's also surprising, is that it took her two days to notice that she wasn't -- erm -- shaping up like normal. Correct me if I'm wrong, ladies, but wouldn't this be pretty obvious?

Women with breast implants are three times more likely to commit suicide than those without, a new study shows. However, this increased risk does not appear to take affect until 10 years after implantation. Nonetheless, plastic surgeons are being urged to assess a patients risk of suicide before surgery. In addition, the study also found that women with breast implants also have a much greater risk of dying from alcohol or drug overdoses than those without.

This seems to say a lot about plastic surgery -- perhaps women who have issues with their body image or who are self-conscious about their looks are more likely to be depressed and/or be addicted to drugs or alcohol. But I am by no means an expert and perhaps there are other underlying factors here. What do you think?

Silicone breast implants were largely shunned about a decade ago due to the implants themselves leaking and causing issues inside the bodies of females who elected to have the small surgery. What happened?

Well, implants containing a harmless saline solution started being used. Today, the silicone kind are making a comeback, and this has several plastic surgery specialists worried about their use and the need for follow-up care after breasts are enlarged.

The FDA just recently approved silicone implants based on doctors scheduling annual MRIs to ensure patients that no ruptures had occurred. Sounds reasonable enough to me -- but is it up to the doctors to police themselves to ensure patients are brought back in for routine checks after silicone implants are used?

As if silicon-filled breast implants did not have enough problems associated with them, a new a European study is raising new concerns about their safety just one month after the FDA approved the return of silicone gel-filled breast implants to the U.S. market. What perfect timing, eh?

Austrian researchers say that surface-level contaminants on the implants themselves could be the cause of immune reactions in women who have them. Dow Corning was sued into bankruptcy in the 1990s due to major problems with silicon breast implants, which were linked with autoimmune illnesses and even cancer.
