The Twitter Diet - This Week on AOL Health

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

Jennette Fulda, diet blogger and twitterer
You may use Twitter or other social networking sites and blogs to keep track of your friends and family, but these 13 weight-loss winners are using personal Twitter and blog accounts to stick to their diets. Among them, Jennette Fulda, pictured above, lost 180 pounds (and wrote a memoir about her success).

So what does Twitter offer to the struggling or advanced dieter or fitness lover? People are using it to track their calories, their weight-loss, their exercise routines and to swap diet reviews, leaner recipes, fitness tips -- and to give each other a morale boost after a slip-up or after a week of no cheating. Click through AOL Health's photo gallery of top Twitter-dieters' before and after photos and their best weight-loss advice (in tweet form, of course).

Plus, follow AOL Health and That's Fit on Twitter.

What about you -- do you have a diet blog or use your Twitter account to track your progress?

The pros and cons of diet blogging

Diet & Weight Loss

Does blogging about your weight loss progress lighten the load? Or is it just dead weight? Blogger Jessica from Jezebel pondered this question in a recent post.

Blogging can be the ultimate weight loss journal. Recording your progress in a journal is a tried and true tactic to keep you on track. And when you put the information out there for anyone to see, well, that's just more reason to stay on course. In addition, there is a wide ring of weight-loss bloggers out there -- starting your own blog and following along with others can be a great source of camaraderie and support.

But I can also see how a weight-loss blog could become a burden. Particularly if it is a paid blogging position, as in the example on Jezebel. It is possible that the pressure of reporting your actions/progress on a blog may lead you to make decisions you otherwise wouldn't. Losing weight isn't a short-term game -- it's a long-term process. Healthy eating and exercising are habits that have to last a lifetime, but everyone has days where they eat birthday cake or skip an exercise session. Even weight-loss bloggers have to give themselves enough room to live a little.

This writer, a gluten-free/Celiac person, says the best way to overcome the trauma of no longer eating your favorite foods is to find replacements that are just as good. And maybe even better. Check out this February 17 post about a gluten-free pancake diet.

WebMD's top health blog picks

Fitness

Addicted to blogs? Addicted to health info too? You're in luck -- WebMD has developed a list of their best health blogs, written by experts in the field. They cover everything from herpes to carpal tunnel syndrome to arthritis to ethics, so if you have a question, it's probably already covered . And though they're a bit biased in that all the blogs are WebMD-run blogs (so no outside info) I think they're a pretty reputable health resource anyway.

You can find the whole list by clicking here.

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in both America and Europe. Here's a few blogs to help get you informed:

Fit Links: Stretching to reach your goals

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

I remember back in elementary school gym class, when we all had to do 5 minutes of stretching before every game of dodgeball. Back in those days, I loved stretching. In fact I wished those 5 minutes could last the whole gym class so I wouldn't have to inevitably (and repeatedly) get hit it the head by a big rubber ball.

But once I got older and started finding sports and workouts I actually enjoyed, stretching started to feel like a waste of my precious time. But don't be tempted to skip the stretches before your next workout! They not only protect you from injury but also add to your results. This week, check out these fitness blogs with helpful stretching information:

Fitness Fixation is a blog that adds a bit of humor to health and fitness blogging but also feature some really useful partner stretches.

Even stretching has become controversial lately! Does stretching while standing really improve your range of motion while you're moving? For the stretching skeptics, read what Jason Ferruggia Uncensored has to say.

And last but not least, Get Great Legs, is well... pretty self explanatory! Check it out for some stretches to help tone and shape your legs, just in time for swimsuit season.

Fit Links: Back to the basics of health and nutrition

As fabulous as we here at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

What we put into our bodies affects our bodies' health and performance. It's as simple as that. And although there's nothing wrong with following the latest health trends, they don't affect the simple cause-and-effect relationship between nutrition and health that's been around since the beginning of mankind.

Yes, since the beginning of mankind... I realize that sounds a little dramatic. I was just setting the stage to introduce you to a few of my favorite nutrition blogs:

The Nutrition Journal isn't an easy read, but it's the place to go when you're looking for an in-depth answer. The website organizes and publishes research papers on human nutrition.

The Health Blog: Free Health and Nutritional Information
. The name speaks for itself! From nutrition in current events, to reader's write-in questions, this site covers anything related to nutrition and health.

The Nutrition and Food Web Archive
contains tons of extensive information on a wide variety of nutrition topics. This site is definitely a good resource to keep in your bookmarks.

Fit Links: Healthy home-cooking recipes

As fabulous as we here at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

Back in November, we shared some links for healthy holiday cooking. But once that holiday baking season is over, it's easy to give up on home-cooking and turn instead to fast, easy, convenience foods. Unfortunately, convenient often means unhealthy.

So, to try to keep 2007 going in a healthy direction, here's some of my favorite healthy recipe blogs to help keep fresh, healthy meal ideas flowing in your kitchen.

Healthy Recipe of the Week is like a club for people who want to try healthy new recipes. The website features a new recipe each week, so you're not overwhelmed having hundreds of recipes to choose from and not knowing when to start.

So, you say that those recipes aren't healthy enough? When you want a healthy recipe, you mean you want a really, really healthy recipe? Well then head over to the Healthy Food Recipe blog. It's full of recipes that are suitable for diabetics and also low calorie, and vegetarian.

Finally, would you feel better taking recipe suggestions from someone if you got to know them a little bit first? Check out the Better Recipes recipe blog. Written from a personal point of view, the blog shares not only favorite healthy recipes but also cooking and food preparation tips and stories.

Fit Links: Getting to know your vitamins and supplements

Nutrition & Supplements

In a perfect world, everyone would get all of their nutrients naturally from the food they ate each day. But when that doesn't happen for us in the real world, it's nice to have vitamins and supplements available that make sure our body is getting what it needs. Here's a few blogs to help you stay informed about the latest news about vitamins and supplements.

Dr Briffa's Blog, written by a London doctor who specializes in nutritional and naturally-oriented medicine, isn't solely about vitamins and supplements but it does have a substantial category covering those topics.

The Vitamin P Show
blog is actually a transcript of a podcast by the same name, hosted by Patrick "Vitamin P" Sullivan Jr., that discusses one health topic per episode. If your eyes need a break from the computer screen check out the podcast! He does try to sell you his brand of vitamins here and there, but the majority of the podcast and post is objective, great information.

The Vitamin Blog covers health news related to vitamins and supplements. While the blog isn't updated as often as I'd like, it's a great resource when you use the search tool for a specific vitamin or problem to find all related information in the archives.
