Raven-Symone - Body Haters Don't Phase Her

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

Raven-SymoneRaven-Symoné loves her body (she calls it thick and beautiful), and she doesn't care what anyone else says. Well, maybe she cares a little bit. But it doesn't take much to boost her confidence -- all the star needs is a chat with mom, who tells her she's very pretty. It's just what this 23-year-old That's So Raven star needs.

Other young girls who need a boost in the body image department are getting some help from Raven-Symoné during a Dove-sponsored self-esteem workshop the singer-actress is hosting for one-hundred 11- and 12-year-old girls. "It's going to be so much fun," she says. "We want to build their self-esteem and give them tools to face the world the next day without us there."

How does this former Cosby little girl face the world? "You just have to learn how to transform the pressures into something that doesn't soak into you on a personal level," she says. "You see it, you breathe past it, you don't let it sink into your self-esteem." Exercise helps too. And screaming doesn't hurt -- "At the end of the day I'll call my best friend and yell and scream and get it out," she says. "And the next morning, it's out of my system."

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products

carol burnettThe secret to thin legs. How to plump up the appearance of a flat fanny. How to stay trim. What exercise does and doesn't count. Carol Burnett shared superb advice on all these topics.

I just saw the legendary funny woman last night and was fortunate enough to ask her a couple of questions. At 73 years young, she really does have a body most women would dream of at that age (including me). In fact, she's always had an amazing physique; just check out her old pics from The Carol Burnett Show!

Burnett is starring in Laughter and Reflection with Carol Burnett: A Conversation with Carol Where the Audience Asks the Questions and besides answering my questions, she answered some from the audience as well.

On the topic of how she keeps her legs so thin: "I shave off loads of excess hair each day."

-The ape woman population will benefit greatly from doing this.

Kellie Pickler - The Country Star Drops 28 Pounds and Exclusively Tells That's Fit How

Celebrity Fitzness Report, Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives? Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.

kellie picklerKellie Pickler has gone through a wicked physical transition of the past few years. When she auditioned to appear on American Idol, at five feet tall, she weighed in as a featherweight 100 pounds. But by the time the competition and Idol tour was over, she had packed on 28 pounds in less than a year. That's a lot of weight on a very little person. The weight gain made Kellie feel bad, but one fellow celebrity (whom most people love and adore) helped her see the light and lose the weight. Read on to hear her story.

Fitz: Your body has changed a ton since you landed in the spotlight. Tell me about that.

Kellie: Oh my goodness! My body has made a big transformation. When I auditioned for Idol I was only 100 pounds and kind of riding on "the young card." Although I exercised a ton, I think I stayed thin because I was ... young! But my eating habits on Idol and the during the tour became terrible. We were always eating fast food on the road and having late night munchies. I gained 28 pounds in less than a year!

Fitz: How'd you take it off?

Age Without Getting Old: Lessons from Celebrities

Healthy Aging, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

cheryl laddI've spent a lot of time with various celebrities this year and have poked them all about their health and fitness habits. Two of the most inspiring were not the young hard bodies we see on the covers of tabloid magazines each week. No, these two celebrities have healthy capable bodies, which have endured many years of living.

The woman I speak of, at 57 years old, is every bit the blond bombshell she was known as 30 years ago. She works out six to seven days a week, mixing up her workouts with: kickboxing, yoga, water aerobics and climbing her steep driveway known as "butt hill."

The man who stood out is in his late 60s and still plays basketball and baseball on a regular basis. The guy has probably been in every hit sitcom in the past three decades and told me that the highlight of his year would be if I could hook him up to throw the ball around with the Heisman Trophy winning University of Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow.

The pressure to be sexy

Reviews & Products, Motivation

girl in pink prom dressI read a news story the other day that bothered me. A Texas teenager had a custom "dress" made for prom (I use quotes because I'm not sure it had enough fabric to qualify as a dress). When she arrived at her prom, she was denied entrance because her dress was deemed inappropriate. An argument ensued, and the young girl ended up being escorted out of her prom -- in handcuffs -- by police.

Whether you agree with the school or with the young girl, I think the issue at the root of this is that many young girls feel a pressure to be sexy. From rail-thin models to red carpet actresses wearing super-sexy gowns, young girls are bombarded with unrealistic images. If you've shopped for young girls' clothing lately, you've probably noticed how it's difficult to find cute, but appropriate, clothing. A good friend of mine has a 10-year-old daughter, and finding clothes that her daughter doesn't deem "nerdy" and yet still cover everything that should be covered is more difficult than you might think.

From a young age, girls need to be reminded that beauty isn't just what's on the surface. Kindness, intelligence, empathy, a sense of humor ... these are all traits that contribute to real beauty. And, while it's important to stay fit and take good care of yourself, there's no need to wear jeans that ride halfway down your hips with the strings of a thong hanging out. Girls can be beautiful without inappropriately exposing themselves. Girl Power is a great site with self-esteem advice for young girls.

Skin care: Now is the time!

Alternative & Green Health

Summer is coming to a close, and your skin may be showing the effects. Now's the time to do damage control, in this in-between time of the year when the summer sun is waning but before the winter weather sets in and you have a whole other set of issues to deal with.

Your top priority should be exfoliating, and then applying moisturizer. Now is the time to switch to something a little heavier than you were using during the summer months, and it's also a good time to attack imperfections like sun spots and other skin/sun damage issues left-over from the summer season. If you're looking for some new products (and who isn't) take a look at this list, and if you've found something that works wonders for you please share!

White teeth: The ultimate beauty and health accessory!

Alternative & Green Health

Straight white teeth: a universal sign of beauty and good health. And thankfully both can be come by fairly easily if you aren't lucky enough to have them naturally, or if you've ruined them somehow in the process of living (smokers!). Of course you'll have to see your dentist to straighten out crooked teeth, and although you can go there for whitening too there are fairly effective ways to do it yourself at home. From cheap to expensive there quite a few options out there, like whitening toothpaste, whitening strips, and whitening gels -- and then of course the professional options available in the spa or dental office. What works for you? eDiets gives their opinions here, share yours in the comments!

6 steps to glowing skin

Alternative & Green Health

I don't care how expensive or wonderful your makeup is, other than covering a flaw here or there you can't completely hide bad skin. The trick is to have healthy glowing skin naturally in the first place, which is easier said than done. But Natural Health has this advice, most of which is just good solid reminders of what we should already know:
  • Get enough sleep
  • Stop smoking
  • Drink in moderation
  • Get enough fatty acids in your diet
  • Limit sweets
  • Exercise regularly
How many of these are you already doing? Any surprises? None of them are particularly hard, but it's amazing how difficult it is to do all 6 at once for any length of time!

The six things you need to get perfect skin

Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health

Hmmm, I'm not sure I'm buying this one. Can the same six products work for everybody with dry skin? Or oily skin? Or sensitive skin? Or just plain normal skin? Even broken down into categories like that I sincerely doubt it, but the people over at Women's Health seem to think that's the case. The six product types are the same for every list, with only brand name and formula recommendations changing for specific skin types. They suggest that for perfect skin everybody should be using a face cleanser, body cleanser, day moisturizer, night moisturizer, body lotion and a moisturizing mist. Well, it seems simple enough, if only diet and stress didn't keep throwing wrenches in the system!

Don't grow old gracefully! Take tips from Clinique

Fitness, Alternative & Green Health

Okay, so you should grow old gracefully (it's just tacky to try to look 20 again), but to me gracefully means doing what you can to look as good as possible every step of the way. There's nothing wrong with putting up a little fight and giving those wrinkles a hard time of it.

There are many many things you can do to help slow the appearance and severity of natural aging, but according to this list by Clinique's dermatologist for iVillage, some of the first things on the list are to wear sunscreen diligently, wear sunglasses and avoid squinting, stop smoking (or don't ever start!), and eat a balanced nutritious diet. That's just the first 5 in a long list of tips, so see the article for 3 pages of just about everything else you can think of -- from getting enough sleep to exfoliating properly.

Get the facts before having cosmetic surgery

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products

The technology improves every year, and as a result more and more people are electing to go under the knife for voluntary cosmetic surgeries. But did you know, that as commonplace as it has become, as many as 40% of people who had something done wish they had learned more about the procedure, risks, and healing process before they went through with it? That's not to say that they were all unhappy with how things turned out, in fact 80% report being satisfied with the overall experience. But there is definitely something to be said for understanding what you're in for and what to expect.

So if you're considering cosmetic surgery you might want to take a hint from those who've been through it -- do your homework, and then some.

Common causes of brittle nails

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Alternative & Green Health

The same way your hair has a major impact on how your face looks, your nails have a major impact on how your hands look. It seems like some poeple are naturally blessed with beautiful fingers and fingernails, while the rest of us struggle with brittle, peeling, cracking nails that break easily.

So what sets some people apart from others when it comes to long sleek nails versus short breaking ones? According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, some common causes are over-using nail products (nail polish, polish removers, hardeners, or other nail products and applications), low zinc or iron levels, or even thyroid problems.

And sadly, sometimes brittle nails are just a normal side-effect of the aging process.

Oh yay.
