Q. Fitz, I'm sick of feeling sick at the end of Thanksgiving Day. I seem to eat all day, even when I'm not hungry. I literally feel like the clothes I put on that morning don't fit me anymore. I'm dreading it this week. What do I do? Alex
A. Gobble Gobble, Alex! I mean ... don't Gobble Gobble, Alex. (Bad joke, I know). Holidays, particularly Thanksgiving, often lead to really weird amounts of mindless eating. It doesn't help that this particular day is actually based on a feast. Darn Pilgrims! Why couldn't they show their gratitude with a running race? I can help you avoid this scenario, though. No one likes to unbutton their jeans to be able to sit down. It's uncomfortable, embarrassing and depressing. So let's get proactive, make a plan and stick with it.

Fit Beauty: Online beauty sites in time for the holidays
For many, Thanksgiving this week doesn't just mean a day of giving thanks, eating turkey, watching football, spending time with family and enjoying a day off of work. I'm sure that for a lot of you out there, one of the best things about Turkey Day is that it also signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season. I'm Canadian and we celebrate Thanksgiving at least a month before our neighbors to the south, but I know enough about American traditions to know that the day after the big event is traditionally one of the biggest and busiest shopping days of the year.
Unfortunately, not all of us deal well with malls that are packed to capacity with bargain hunters. I'm not a good shopper and admit that I'd rather pay more for just about anything, if it means that I can avoid a tugging match with a frenzied shopaholic over the last cute hoodie or pair of yoga pants on the sale table.
So what are we non-shoppers to do at this time of year? Most of us can't just ignore the craziness altogether and show up at a family gathering empty-handed. While it really is better to give than to receive, I'd still like to see the looks on all of our mothers' faces when, after gratefully accepting some lovely new slippers and an expensive set of sheets, we announce that this year we're just giving the gift of love and good cheer. However, I still don't want to have to spend hours of my precious holiday time duking it out for the best deal at Linens-n-Things.
I've discovered that the answer, at least as far as I'm concerned, exists online. While a mere few years ago I was skeptical of anything I could buy on the web, online shopping has become my savior. So in the interest of the spirit of the holidays, I'd like to share with those who may not yet be in the know, two of my favorite companies to find the gift of beauty, online.
The first is the fabulous H20+, a company that has several freestanding stores across the US and Canada, but which isn't as widely available as a brand like the Body Shop or Bath and Body Works. I've had the chance to visit H20 stores in Las Vegas, Vancouver and even Sydney, Australia, and every time I walk through the doors, I feel completely relaxed. The company specializes in 'sea-derived skincare', offering products for hands, feet, face, body, hair and more. They've got a pretty fantastic men's line for those looking to find something nice for a special guy in their life, and also carry a few nice, light fragrances that smell great but don't overwhelm. I've loved pretty much every product of theirs that I've ever tried and one of the best things about H20 is that, while some of their stuff gets a bit pricey, they also offer fantastic, reasonably-priced gift sets, give away 'gift-with-purchase' items and shipping is free for any order over $100.
My second favorite place to find great beauty items online is at the site for Vancouver-based spa company Skoah. The relatively new company only has three physical locations (2 in Vancouver and 1 in Calgary, Alberta) but will ship their products all over the United States and Canada. Like H20+, their stuff doesn't always come cheap, but as far as skincare products are concerned, they're pretty reasonable -- plus in my opinion, everything they sell smells great. I've tried a number of their products and a few of the best include the luxurious dewlux face kream, the eye kandy moisturizer and the lip dip, which at $15CDN for .5oz (15g), is an awesome deal --seriously, it will last you for years.
I'm sure that there are loads more excellent online sites where you can find some great beauty products without having to leave the comfort of your home or office, but these are just two of my personal favs. If anyone else out there has an excellent site that they've frequented, those of us hoping to avoid the mall rush this season would love to hear about it!
A few ways to deal with halitosis
Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss
Halitosis, the technical term for bad breath (aka oral malodour, apparently), can be an embarrassing and touchy subject. Let's face it, nobody wants to repel people with their breath. There are a range of potential causes for bad breath, some of which are medical and may be helped by a simple visit to the doctor. Others though, have more to do with what you eat and various habits.
If you know you suffer from halitosis and want to try to remedy the situation, it might be worthwhile to take some (or all) of the advice suggested here. Avoiding food like garlic and onions might help, but apparently not eating at all may cause bad breath, so make sure eat a regular, healthy diet. Other tips include staying hydrated as dry mouth can cause foul breath, giving up cigarettes and looking after your mouth and teeth by brushing, flossing and gargling with mouthwash.
As mentioned, if none of these things seem to work, it's probably a good idea to make an appointment to discuss the situation with your doctor.
Pizza can be good for you
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
I love pizza. It's actually one of my favorite foods, not only because it tastes great but also because it is so versatile. You can try different sauces (tomato, Alfredo, pesto), different cheeses (mozza, feta or even no cheese at all) and more topping combinations than I can possibly list.
Since I'm such a fan, it irritates me when people assume that pizza must be unhealthy. While it's true that fast food pizza is greasy, overly-cheesy, covered in processed meats and high in calories and fat, it's still possible to make a delicious and healthy pizza. Many restaurants offer nutritious pizza options as well.
If you're jonesing for a slice but want to keep it healthy, consider the advice listed here. Try to choose wholewheat or multigrain crust, stick with a reasonable amount of calcium-rich cheese (rather than ordering double), load up on veggies and even fruit (pineapple and banana peppers is a personal favorite because of the mix of hot and sweet flavors) and choose lean meats like ham or chicken over processed stuff like pepperoni and salami. If you choose these nutritious options, you can actually feel good about scarfing a slice.

Choosing the right sneaker
Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Healthy Products and Reviews, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
Choosing the right sneaker is one of the most important components of surviving a great workout without any injuries. Just as a mouthpiece is vital to a boxer, proper footwear is important to you. I've seen folks running in basketball shoes and doing dance aerobics in running shoes. Both cases are an injury waiting to happen.
Nowadays, we walk into a shoe store and see a zillion different shoe types: runners, cross trainers, cleats, high tops, low tops, all terrain, etc. Why so many? We didn't used to have so many options. Sneakers were sneakers and that was that. Well, research and technology is your answer. Now that we know better, we do better. Each shoe is now specifically designed to provide support in places where certain activities cause the most shock. I'm listing a few examples, and before you read the supporting text. Think about what each athlete's feet and ankles endure.
Runners. Every time a runner takes a step, three times his/her body weight is impacting down on each foot. That is why there are often gigantic air pockets on the bottom of each shoe. Running shoes are created so that both your heel and forefoot are extremely supported with padding. The bottom tread is rough to grab the road and help prevent slipping. This shoe is light so the weight of each shoe doesn't hinder the users performance. Runners are normally only moving forward, so lateral ankle support of a high top is unnecessary.
Migraine triggers, Do's and Don'ts
Diet & Weight Loss, Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements
Headaches are absolutely no fun. On busy days with a packed agenda, migraines can be debilitating. Sometimes people are prone to getting them more than others. But quite often you can find your head splitting due to a trigger like certain foods or emotional stress. This health website points out migraine triggers and how to identify them. I was surprised to see that chocolate, coffee and even red wine could possibly cause a headache! Also interesting to note is that a migraine can set in during a post-stressful time, like on vacation or another type of break that would normally be relaxing.
Avoiding tyramine helps too (we're looking at you cheesy foods). So how does this information help? Well, since everyone reacts to these triggers differently, you can scan over and see if they match your history of migraine patterns. Avoiding specific foods or getting more rest could be the answer. Remember to consult a doctor though if a headache seems to persist over a long period of time.
