Water - Five Ways To Get It, Even If You Don't Like It
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
You know that rule? The one that says you should get eight to 10 glasses of water a day? What do you do if you don't actually like drinking water? Hey, some people don't. After all, it is, by nature, the most bland beverage out there. But drinking lots of water is important for your health and losing weight, especially during the holidays. If plain old agua isn't your thing, try ...
- Eating lots of produce. It's mostly water!
- Making or ordering soup. Again, it's mainly water, but try to stay away from high-sodium canned soups because they will cause you to retain water as well.
- Warming up with herbal tea. Vanilla, peppermint ... there's an endless variety of flavours to choose from, so choose one and drink up.
- Drinking juice. Most juices have a ton of sugar, but if you're not getting any other sources of hydration, juice will have to do. Add some carbonated water to give it a kick and up your water intake at the same time.
- Adding stuff. Things like lemon wedges and mint leaves will add a bunch of flavour and none of the calories, so it can't hurt to try.

Drinking water for weight loss: Is it a 'waist' of time?
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
If you're looking to slim down, one of the first tips you'll probably get is to drink more water. But for those of us who diligently down our 64 oz a day, here's some bad news: Recent studies out of the UK suggest that drinking water to slim down could be a waste of time. In a study of 1,000 young women, researchers found no link between waist size and drinking habits -- regardless of what participants regularly drank, be it soda, juice, coffee, tea or water.
However, there was a link between waist size and water consumption in food -- meaning that women who ate foods high in water content -- think fruits, veggies, soups, rice, etc -- tend to be smaller. Read the full findings here.
Still, I would take these findings with a grain of salt. Not only does your body require water to function, I think it's great for weight loss because it helps flush out your system and can take the edge off your hunger. I swear by it anyway -- what about you?

Forget the idea that training in the pool is a mamby-pamby workout. AquaLogix is throwing that idea out with the theory that one catches a cold from going out with wet hair! I've been testing out some amazing new fitness tools that can literally cater to both the elderly crowd in nursing homes and professional athletes. I'm on the uber-fit side, and these things kicked my ass! Excuse my language, but an hour in the pool using an advanced level set of Cardio Bells and Cardio Fins left my arms and legs trembling for an incredibly long time.
I'm sure many of you have used the traditional foam dumbbells in the water. They're awkward, right? I've been teaching fitness for 20 years, both in and out of the water, and I still look at the foam dumbbells with a question mark over my head! They drive me nuts, because they limit our mobility drastically. Up, down, up, down and that's it. Cardio Bells are the answer to that issue and many more. Their unique design allows the user to move in absolutely every direction, and the resistance they create is insane! I shared my new "cool tools" at the lap pool this week with dozens of fellow exercisers. Absolutely every last person from ages eight to 85 were both astonished at how much drag they created and how comfortable they are to use.
The other cool tools I received from AquaLogix were Cardio Fins. A brilliant innovation. Cardio Fins are soft Velcro bands that strap around the users wrists or ankles and create incredible drag. Using the advanced level Cardio Fins as I ran laps in the pool today made me feel as though I was climbing Mt. Everest. I love a challenge and the combination of the Cardio Fins and the Cardio Bells kept me struggling with gritted teeth.

I've been drenched this summer. About a million hours so far racing around water parks, pounding out cannonball after cannonball with my children and running laps in pools with clients striving to become more fit. I just thought I'd give credit to the one thing that's allowing me to get through it all and keep coming back for more: my pool shoes.
I tell you, they're ugly, fugly, and completely unflattering with my brown polka dotted bikini. They are, in fact, the only thing keeping me from tapping out of summer fun though. I realized this yesterday as I went to work at my client's lap pool and forgot them. Oh man! Every step I took was more excruciating than the last. It was dreadful. I also had a rotten experience a bit back when I hit Disney's Typhoon Lagoon without my fancy footwear. Between the heat, the concrete, and the sand ... my feet took quite a beating.
So! If you too, are working out in the water this summer and want to take it up a notch ... protect those tootsies and get yourself some pool shoes. They're one of the most functional fitness tools I've used all summer!
You Are What You Eat: It doesn't get any simpler than water
This week's superfood is not technically a food. It's a beverage. But it's the mightiest of all the beverages out there. It's refreshing, calorie-free, inexpensive ... and essential for life. Are we talking about Diet Coke here? No way. This miracle drink is, of course, water -- you know, that clear stuff that comes out of your tap and is sold in plastic bottles on stores.

Q. Dear Fitz, I love the summer weather, and really want to use the large outdoor pool at my gym. I do water walking and swim a couple of laps, but then I get so bored! Swimming 20 laps in a row is not fun for me. I'm pretty sure swimming burns a lot of calories, which is my goal. Help! Deanna
A. Hi Deanna, I'm so excited to help you, cause I too love the benefits of training in the water. We always hear that it's a terrific workout for those who want to avoid trauma from high impact activities. It also happens to be a fantastic workout for those who want to burn a massive amount of calories! Quick personal story. About eight years ago, while in the midst of a competitive kickboxing career, I tore my right hamstring. This made it impossible for me to do almost any sort of activity that involved any sort of impact. I also happened to be about 5% body fat at the time. I thought there was no way in the world that I could lose another pound. At 5'6" and 114 pounds, I was sitting on my bones. Having said that ... after swimming most nights for three weeks I actually lost three pounds. I was sold! Swimming is awesome exercise!

Q. Hi Fitz, I have a small kidney-shaped pool in my back yard. My preteen kids will be in it all summer and I'd like to kill two birds with one stone by spending time with them and getting in some exercise. What things do you recommend I do for a workout in a small pool? Andrea
A. Hello Miss Andrea. Thanks for the fantastic question. I love questions that pertain to a lot of people, and this one certainly does. I imagine there will be tons of moms and dads in pools over the next few months, trying to make the most out of their outdoor time. Here's the best news. Playing with your children and doing all of the things they do will prove to be a tremendous workout in itself. Kids are cuckoo in the water, and that requires lots of energy. So, at minimum, you could just play copycat.
Daily Fit Tip: Ways to liven up water
-Add a slice of lemon: or orange, or lime, or cucumber. It gives your water just a hint of excitement and is surprisingly refreshing.
-Drink some sugar-free juice instead: I am in love with Crystal Light's lemon iced tea, and it's 0 calories so when I'm craving something sweet, I add that to my water and I'm set.
-Eat it: Most fruits largely consist of water, so if you have, say, an orange or some watermelon, you're getting a good fill of water in edible form.
-Carry it everywhere: It's easy to miss your servings of water if you don't have it with you all the time, so bring it along and make it the first thing you reach for when you're thirsty.
What are your tips?
