Daily Fit Tip: Bug-proof naturally

Daily Fit Tip

Sometimes I don't know which one is worse: dealing with the bugs or dealing with the greasy, smelly, full-of-toxic-chemicals bug repellent! Thankfully there are natural ways to cope.

Daily Fit Tip: Use flower power for better skin

Daily Fit Tip, Alternative & Green Health

It amazes me sometimes how technology is always searching to create new chemicals and compounds to help us look younger and take better care of our skin when sometimes the best products are based on the most natural things.

Have you ever considered lily extract for soothing and balancing out problem skin? I admit I haven't, or at least hadn't until I read this article over at Natural Health. Most commonly used for its fragrance, lily extract also has antioxidant and antiseptic properties that make it a natural for skin care. It moisturizes, softens, clarifies, and even minimizes pores.

Look for for "lily extract" or "tincture of lily flower" on the label.

Don't fall for these labels

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

Health is hip these days, and almost every company out there is trying to capitalize on this by claiming their products are healthy. But unfortunately, many of these so-called 'healthy' items aren't necessarily good for you. Be wary of foods with these labels on them:
  • All Natural. Sure, it might not be heavily processed, but it still may be high in calories, fat or both.
  • Cholesterol-free. This doesn't mean fat free. In fact, many cholesterol-free foods are high in saturated fat
  • Low fat or fat-free. This doesn't mean calorie-free so watch out.
  • Trans fat-free. Just because there's no trans fat, doesn't mean there's no fat. There are probably some dangerous saturated fats in there.
  • Low sodium. It's a good idea to reduce your sodium but look into what they've replaced it with. It might be sugar.
  • Good source of ... Many unhealthy food items claim their healthy by emphasizing one nutrient. For example? Macaroni and cheese packages claim it to be a good source of calcium (it is) but they don't mention that it's very high in fat, sodium and calories.
  • Multi grain. Multi grains aren't necessarily whole grains, so check the label.
  • Baked. Backed chips are a better choice than fried ones, but they're often high in calories and sodium
  • Organic. There's no doubt that organic food is better than regular stuff, but just because it's organic, doesn't mean it's healthy. It can still be high in organic fat and organic calories.

The biggest myths about alternative medicine

Alternative & Green Health

I'm a big believer in home remedies and natural approaches to various health issues, but I also believe that in some cases "natural" just won't cut it and technology may have the answer instead. But when dealing with alternative health approaches understanding the pros, cons, limits, and risks is imperative. Do you think you have a solid understanding of the basics? Here are a few of the biggest misconceptions people have about alternative medicine:
  • "All natural" automatically translates to "all safe." Not true. Natural and herbal compounds often vary in strength, and they can interact and have serious side effects just like many prescription medications.
  • "Alternative therapies are cheaper than conventional ones." Not true in many cases. Although they may have a cheaper price tag they often aren't covered by insurance.
  • "There's little to no solid research to support the effects of alternative medicine." Not true, although many times research on alternative medicine is not documented and written about in scientific language, which can have a negative influence with doctors.
There's more on this list from Forbes so pop over there and take a look, and then share your thoughts on alternative medicine in our comments section!

Mineral make-ups: Are they all they're cracked up to be?

Alternative & Green Health

Although mineral make-up has been around since the seventies it's going stronger than ever today, riding the wave of all things natural and chemical free. Mineral make-up is generally made up of finely ground and all natural minerals from the earth, and some who use it swear by the smooth finish, light reflecting properties, and lack of dyes and preservatives. But others aren't convinced, complaining that mineral make-ups irritate skin, make wrinkles more pronounced, and often have ugly ashy undertones.

It's a complicated debate, and one that isn't likely to be resolved anytime soon as both sides have support for their arguments. What it really boils down to is reading labels (not all mineral make-ups are truly 'all natural') and finding what works for you.
