Tokyo cafe lets customers enjoy cats

The health benefits of pet ownership are well-documented -- lower blood pressure and less stress among them. But not everyone is able to keep a pet. Allergies, lifestyle, and restrictions on pet ownership in living spaces can prevent animal lovers from having a pet of their own.

In Tokyo, it's especially hard to keep a pet. The market for apartments is competitive, and landlords are increasingly banning pets from their properties. But a new cafe allows people to reap the benefits that pets can offer, without all the hassles that pet ownership can bring. At the Calico Cafe, customers can drink coffee, order snacks, and shop for a variety of goodies, all while enjoying a cuddle and a purr from the stores many cats.

Would a similar business be popular in the U.S? What do you think?

Get some curry in a hurry

The good news? Curcumin, an ingredient in the curry spice turmeric, may help prevent heart failure. The bad news? So far, it's only been tested on lab rats. Nevertheless, researchers from National Hospital Organization in Kyoto and the University of Toronto's cardiology division hope that this is a step forward in helping to prevent heart disease in human.

Two separate studies were conducted using rats that been engineered (that is, they were either given special drugs or had surgery) to put them at risk of heart failure. The curcumin was then administered to the rats, I guess once they were deemed good and unhealthy.

The rats that were given curcumin exhibited greater resistance to heart failure and inflammation than the rats that were not given anything (apart from medically induced heart problems, that is -- which I'm sure they're grateful for).

The results of the study, which were published in the February edition of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, showed no sign of side effects from curcumin.

Whether or not curcumin could be used by humans to prevent heart failure remains uncertain at this point. But, in the meantime, you can always use it to zest up some of your healthy dinners!!

Reebok introduces Freestyle World Tour Collection

When I think of Reebok, my mind immediately goes to the most fashion forward cities in the world, like Paris and Madrid. Doesn't yours? It should!

Reebok is debuting its Freestyle World Tour Collection with a campaign that began on February 21. The footwear and apparel line is inspired by the "iconic Freestyle shoe that forever changed the face of women's fitness." Back in the 1980's, when Freestyles first hit the streets, they were just as much about fashion as they were about fitness.

This time around, Reebok will incorporate a completely original campaign, basing its line on six up and coming young women from six cities around the world -- Tokyo, Paris, New Delhi, Madrid, London, and NYC. Six different versions of the Freestyle have been created based upon each of these cities. For example, Tokyo's has flashy foil, while London's shoe is a reserved mix of muted colors.

Check them out -- which shoe epitomizes your sense of fitness fashion?

Yoga and lifestyle games invade Asian video game expo

If you're interested in taking a yoga class, there's no need to head to the studio anymore -- A Japanese video game maker has developed a digital yoga instructor, who can guide you through a series of postures and offer advice on stretching. If the Pilates is more your thing, they offer than too.

The digital Yoga instructor was showcased at Asia's biggest video game expo, which happened last weekend in Tokyo. And for those of us who are more comfortable doing yoga than slaying dragons and blowing up bad guys, the show featured many other lifestyle-oriented video games. Expect to see more and more at stores near you.

Japan begins incinerating 10,000+ chickens

Why on earth would Japanese officials want to burn over 10,000 chickens anyway? Well, the authorities started the process after the chickens were found to have the bird flu or were culled at the farm they started dying in. A broad subtype of the bird flu known as H5 is the culprit, and while not necessarily fatal to us, it is very pathogenic to the unfortunate poultry.

Want to know how serious they are about the threat? The Japanese government "has banned shipments of eggs and 330,000 chickens at 16 poultry farms within a 6.2-mile radius of the farm," according to the article. They are not taking any chances considering that over 150 people have died worldwide due to a strain of the bird flu.

Given the numbers, it seems as though trans fat poses more of a threat than this health hazard. But even so, it is still interesting to see how other countries are going to great lengths to protect themselves.
