Readers say Yay! to menu calorie counts
Calorie counts have popped on menus in New York, and they could be coming to a restaurant near you too. Per my earlier post on the topic, we know The View co-host Joy Behar doesn't like looking at calorie totals when she's ordering. She's pretty sure she knows what she's getting when she picks her meals. She doesn't need anything in writing or in her face. You -- all you readers out there -- now, you seem to be of a different mindset. Look at what 106 of you shared when polled on your thoughts about the whole calorie count thing.- 89.6% of you like calorie counts.
- 2.8% of you don't like them.
- 7.5% of you don't really care.
Calorie counts like STDs, says this co-host

The calorie-count mandate was effective this past April, but the buzz is still buzzing: Some like it, some don't, and co-host and comedienne Joy Behar -- well, she's on the not-liking-it side (she doesn't like John McCain either, by the way). Here's exactly what she says about in-your-face calorie counts: Listing calories on a menu is like listing STDs at a brothel. No beating around the bush for this gal. The way she sees it, when you walk into McDonald's you know what you're going to get: Lots of calories. When you walk into a brothel, well same thing, except for the calorie part.
What do you think? Do you like calorie counts? Not like them? Or do you not really care?
Are politics making you fat?

Sherri Shepherd says she was shoveling down Ruffles potato chips the other night while watching election television. Elisabeth Hasselbeck reports she's been eating mindlessly. And Joy Behar is eating her anxiety away. While these women are surely revved up politically -- have you seen their on-air disputes? Poor Hasselback, not one co-host agrees with the girl's conservative perspectives -- yet hearing their take on election-inspired eating was news to me. It makes sense -- I mean, watching TV is a known to promote snacking -- but I don't find myself eating all that much more.
Tell us: Are you eating your way through this election season? Do you fear politics will make you fat? If so, try cutting down on calories with these gallery snacks.
Worry about cheeseburgers, not terrorism
Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements
I consistently tune into ABCs The View on weekday mornings because the five women who host the show seem to always have something to say about health, nutrition, and fitness. On Tuesday, they talked about what we should we be worried about in this world. It's not terrorism, though. It's cheeseburgers.
Co-host Barbara Walters said we are witnessing the first generation of people who may not live as long as their parents. Why? Because of the obesity epidemic. At the other end of the hostess table was Whoopi who recalled her childhood days. Whenever she'd sneak her hand in the cookie jar, she said, her mom put a stop to her antics. Maybe after dinner, she would be permitted an indulgence but there was structure in her house. We need to instill in kids the proper way to eat, before things get out of control. Not when they're seven or eight but right off the bat, when they're small.
Maybe that state of our eating issues are linked to the influx of working moms who take care of their jobs, their husbands, their kids and are forced to grab quick and sometimes not-so-nutritious bites to eat, says co-host Joy Behar. High fructose corn syrup is another problem, chimed in Whoopi.
What do you fear most? Terrorism or cheeseburgers?

Whoopi's smoking status revealed
Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment
I wrote in November that The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg was kicking butts. Tired of her smoking habit, she vowed to rid herself of cigarettes by December 15. So how's she doing? I found out today while watching Whoopi and crew interview Law & Order star S. Epatha Merkerson, herself a cold-turkey quitter after 23 years of smoking.Whoopi is smoking one cigarette a day, she reports. She didn't meet her targeted end date, but what do you think? Poor performance? Or pretty good progress?
Whoopi is still determined to kick butts once and for all. Actress Merkerson's advice to her: Drink lots of water. Whoopi, who says she is plenty dehydrated, was thankful for the words of wisdom.
Star Jones dishes about how she lost the weight
The mystery of Star Jones Reynolds and how she lost all that weight is soon to be common knowledge in the upcoming September issue of Glamour magazine (available Aug 7th). Star says she chose to do an article versus an interview because she wanted to go "as in depth as possible" about how she's changed over the years. Star has a lot going for her right now as she also has a new talk show scheduled to premier on August 20th on Court TV. And when asked if she has trouble looking at past, heavier, photos of herself Star says it doesn't bother her -- instead it reminds her not to let herself get to that place again.
