The No-Diet Diet Is the Next Big Thing

Diet & Weight Loss

Most of us have come to accept that diets don't work. So it's only natural, then, that the next big trend in dieting is ... to not diet at all. But intentionally not dieting is, in a sense, a different sort of diet. Confused yet? There is a method to this madness -- I'll explain.

Esther Blum, author of Eat, Drink and Be Gorgeous and nutritionist to celebs like SJP and Teri Hatcher is the one spearheading this non-diet diet. She thinks you should ditch the detoxes, the gimmicks, the so-called quick fixes and just. start. living. The first step is accepting your body -- flaws, curves and all. The second is eating what you want, as long as it's fresh, natural and wholesome (yes, this even includes butter.) The third is signing up for exercise that you actually like. You can read more here.

Sounds fun ... but does it work? Considering that Blum herself is teeny tiny, just like the celebs who endorse her book, I'd say it probably has some merit. Your thoughts?

Slim Down With Fatty Foods and Alcohol. No, Seriously.

Diet & Weight Loss

alcoholProminent New York nutritionist Esther Blum thinks you should rely on fatty foods and alcohol to slim down in the new year. You're probably checking the calendar right now but I can assure you it's not April 1st, and Miss Blum is serious. In fact, Teri Hatcher is a follower of her unconventional plan.

According to this article from the Daily Mail, Esther Blum's diet is kind of like Atkin's, except you're allowed carbs and alcohol. However, you need to watch that you're sticking to healthy fats and not over-indulging in carbs. As far as alcohol goes, stick to straight shooters to avoid sugary mixers.

Hatcher: Eat the chocolate, but not after 7

Celebs & Entertainment

How about some motherly advice from Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher?

  • Have great sex
  • Eat the chocolate
  • Don't sit on public toilet seats
  • Make sure to floss
  • Don't eat after 7 PM
  • Dance like teenager

Intended for her 10-year-old daughter Emerson (anyone think the sex part is a bit much for a 10-year-old?), this wisdom comes from a woman who considers herself successful yet somewhat fragile. Constantly working on herself, the 43-year-old mom practices a little self-help -- she has a "goal board" at home, a collage of images and things she wants to achieve in her life. All written, glued, or drawn onto a big piece of paper, Hatcher's handiwork keeps her focused on her goals.

Desperate Housewives dieting competition

On a show starring several women, it makes sense that each actress would want to look her very best. When actress Dana Delaney arrived at Wisteria Lane to play a new character on Desperate Housewives, she noticed that this was, indeed the case. In fact, she said there was a bit of a "dieting competition" between the ladies.

Delaney isn't the only one to notice the dieting -- when she arrived, the costume designer told her, "Don't get the Desperate Housewives disease." When she asked what that meant, she was told that everybody loses weight and their clothes stop fitting.

While having a workout buddy is helpful, and partnering up to lose weight is pretty effective, this isn't sounding so healthy. At least Delaney noted that there was no fighting among the cast, putting that rumor to rest. Still, I'm hoping this competition isn't quite as bad as it sounds -- none of those women have any weight to lose!

Hot celebrities over 40 (and how they impact the rest of us)

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Shows like Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City have given the world a new way to look at aging. Turning 40 or 50 no longer necessarily means a party with an "Over the Hill" theme -- older men and women can be just as sexy as their much-younger counterparts. And that's a good thing. Right?

Well, yes and no. It's fantastic that we are shedding our stereotypes regarding middle-age, for men as well as for women. Most men would agree that Halle Berry and Heather Locklear are just as sexy as any 20-year-old actress, and men over 40 include George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Pierce Brosnan -- 'nuf said.

However, eating disorders for adult women are on the rise. We see celebrities like Teri Hatcher, Demi Moore, and Kim Cattrall and while we know that the way they look simply isn't attainable for everyone, it doesn't mean many women don't try by resorting to anorexia or bulimia. Check out our gallery of super sexy celebrities who've celebrated 40 or more birthdays, but use these as inspiration, not for comparison. And, head over to AOL Body to see who they think is over 40 and still smokin' hot!
