Death by anniversary

Recent research shows that the anniversary of a parent's death can trigger sudden death, particularly for men. Researchers think the mental stress from the anniversary of the event may induce sudden death in people that are prone to heart failure. People at risk will likely have a family history of heart attack, sudden death, and/or coronary disease. Other risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, or a sedentary lifestyle.

Researchers evaluated 102 sudden deaths of people between 37 and 79 years old. 70% of those people died from coronary artery disease. 12% of the people died on the anniversary of a parent's death. 80% of those who died on an anniversary date were male.

Normal methadone doses could cause sudden death

Researchers from the Oregon Health and Science University have said the pain killing opioid methadone may be contributing to cases of sudden death due to cardiac arrest. This from a product used to treat some types of drug dependence as well as manage pain.

Unexplained causes of sudden death in the Portland, Oregon area were studied to find some kind of connection. In the "unexplained"category that researchers looked at, a correlation between heart abnormalities and normal, therapeutic methadone use was made.

After the findings were released, the study team suggested that physicians ensure normal heart rhythms using ECG measurements for those undergoing any kind of treatment involving normal doses of methadone.

Many athletic deaths due to enlarged hearts

With a few marathon-related deaths in the last few months, the latest comes from the death of another runner this past weekend while running a trial run for the U.S. Olympic team in New York City.

Although hydration is also an issue in marathon-related deaths in some cases, experts say that an enlarged heart is the biggest cause of sudden death among young athletes. Marathon runners are included in that group.

Why do athletes -- many whom are in great shape -- die from enlarged hearts? Well,. for one thing, there is no uniform screening of athletes according to Dr. Lori Mosca, director of preventive cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. So, in effect, any possible complications really are not known as these runners subject their bodies to extreme stress -- and some die as a result.
