Save your skin this summer, with style

Thinking of ways you'll save your skin this summer when the sun's rays come beating down upon you? Don't forget the standards: Avoid the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, use sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, steer clear of artificial sources of ultraviolet light, and wear sun-protective clothing when exposed to sunlight.

Wearing clothing that offers UV protection can be more effective than using sunscreen alone, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Look for clothing that offers an ultraviolet protection factor of at least 30 -- it will offer six times more protection than a t-shirt.

Columbia Sportswear offers one option for those seeking to shield themselves from the sun: The Seaside Stretch Tunic with UPF 40. It costs $48 which may seem a bit steep. But the savings your skin will enjoy may be well worth the price.

Got any recommendations on UPF clothing? If so, leave a comment and we'll share your suggestions with our readers.

Scented Kool-Aid tennis shoes

I laughed so hard when I read Lauren's first impression of these Kool-Aid scented sneakers over at Styledash. She's horrified at the thought, though commenters on the post seem to think they're going to be a hit. Honestly, I have to agree with her readers (I'm properly horrified for you, though, Lauren!).

Though I wouldn't put my own feet in a pair, the recycling of 70s and 80s pop culture is a popular way to get kids and young people (and their parents, who feel that sentimental tug) to snatch up novelty items like these.

That said, can you imagine what these are going to smell like after a few hard workouts? Grape Kool-Aid and sweaty feet...ug.

Working out in Wool?

When it comes to choosing what to wear for a workout, I go for whatever is lightest, which is usually a pair of stretchy capri-style pants and a tank. Even though I live in a cold climate, I couldn't imagine wearing anything more because I tend to get very warm very fast. So I couldn't imagine working out in something made of, say, wool, but that's exactly what this company wants you to do. They're called Ibex and they produce a variety of sportswear, some of which is made from their signature lightweight, machine-washable wool. I'm not entirely convinced -- the word wool makes me automatically think of my itchy Christmas sweater that leaves me sweating bullets if the temperature is anywhere above freezing.

I haven't tried it -- have you? Is it really as lightweight as they say?
