Spanish kids treated for phone addiction

young boy on cell phone
This morning I had to talk to my son about his latest little escapade -- putting a huge wad of gum down the garbage disposal. I spent a good half hour risking limbs while cleaning up that mess. Yet when I talked to him about it, he barely seemed to listen much less apologize sincerely. I finally had to request an apology -- and the one I got was insincere. (Grr.) As a punishment, he has to do extra chores to "make up the time" that I spent fixing the disposal. He wasn't phased by that at all.

So I know how it feels when you try to discipline your child and you know that you're not getting through. Rachel over at ParentDish has written about extreme measures parents have taken to get through to their kids. Recently, a Spanish couple has taken their own extreme measure -- they had their kids admitted to a mental health institution to be treated for their addiction to their cell phones.

The kids, ages 12 and 13, were having a hard time in school and completing other activities because of their phones. In addition, they were lying to relatives in order to get money to spend on their phones. They had had their phones for 18 months. Before recognizing that it had become a problem, their parents hadn't restricted their cell phone use.

Can cell phones be addictive?

Colin Farrell calls dramatic weight loss healthy

Reporters at a recent press conference in Spain were nothing but stunned when actor Colin Farrell appeared at the event looking shockingly thin.

Why the major transformation for this Hollywood bad boy?

"I lost weight because my role demanded it," said the 31-year-old of his upcoming film, Triage. "It was all very healthy."

It was a few sentences from the Scott Anderson novel that inspired Farrell's drastic slim-down: He went to the bathroom to shave. Once his beard was gone he saw that his face had become drawn. He pressed at the hollows beneath his eyes, the pronounced nubs of his cheekbones.

Farrell, not willing to fess up to his weight-loss secrets, plays a war reporter in Bosnia in this new film and spent five weeks perfecting his character.

It's healthy to go nuts

It can sometimes seem like the world is a little nuts, but that's not always a bad thing. Case in point: there is growing evidence showing that nuts can benefit for your cardiovascular health. I know, I know...a while was macadamia nuts, then it was pistachios, and now, well, now I'm going to mention the benefit of the rest of the lot.

Be it peanuts, Brazil nuts, cashews, walnuts or of course the two kinds I mentioned in earlier posts, nuts are clearly a healthy way to reduce cholesterol and reduce caloric consumption. A study, conducted in Spain, involved the survey of almost 9,000 people and their nut consumption and weight. Twenty-eight months later, a follow-up survey was held -- showing that people who ate nuts at least twice a week were 30 percent less likely than non nut eaters to put on some extra poundage.

The reason behind this is that nuts contain good fats; providing the body with a sustainable energy source, and they also contain a fair amount of protein. Couple these factors with the feeling of overall fullness a person experiences after eating nuts (and therefore doesn't feel the need to reach for a bag of cookies), and you have found a good explanation for the lessened chance of weight loss in the study participants.

Designer clothing in Spain to be standardized

Spain shook up the fashion world last year when they banned too-skinny models from the runway of their main fashion show, Madrid's Pasarela Cibeles, because they were concerned about creating an unhealthy image for young consumers.

Now the country's Health Ministry is taking things a step further and asking designers to standardize their sizes. Do you know how you can buy a size 10 in one store and have it fit perfectly, but a 12 is too tight in the next? That won't happen anymore in Spain, and major designers like Zara and Cortefiel have agreed to participate. In addition, store mannequins are getting a makeover. Participating stores will be required to create window displays with clothing no smaller than a size 40 (an 8 in the United States). In addition, a size 46 (a U.S. size 16) will no longer be labeled as "plus-size."

The Spanish government say they developed this program so that the standards put out by the fashion industry more closely resemble reality, and they say (rightly so, in my opinion) that "beauty and health go hand in hand."
