Breast-fed kids are smarter

Do you believe that those kids who are breast fed actually end up smarter compared to those fed formula as babies? Well, not all breast fed babies end up smarter, but many do.

A new study gave credit to breast-fed babies being more smart to a very common gene that is found expressed in about 90 percent of the population.

In this case, the breast-fed babies who shared the gene with parents ended up outscoring bottle-fed peers in intelligence tests according to the research. The gene in question helps process fatty acids, which in turn assists the intelligence quotient of those kids who have it present.

Raising a smart baby required one thing: you

Do you know what it takes to raise a smart baby? Whether you're preparing that special child for being a future Rhodes Scholar or for a Presidential bid, nothing can take the place of ... you.

Sure, the discussion around how to raise the smartest child has been around, well, forever,. The intense focus some parents put on this now is happening in more cases, as intellectual stimulation and brain development experts are coming out of the woodwork in the form of parents.

It's been said that the first five years of life are where the essential brain building occurs for lifelong learning, so nurturing in those years is especially important. Do you agree? One thing is clear -- it sure beats trying to teach many of them when those teenage years arrive.

Adult smartness levels hit before puberty

There are some the believe that quite a bit of cognitive development happens between the ages of three and five, then there are others that think the 10-12 age is pretty significant. Both answers are really true in different ways, and even new research suggests that adult level of learning are happening at ages 11 and 12.

How do children's brains grow and at what rate does adult learning become possible and achievable? Before that voice changes and those hairy messes start happening.

MRI research is being done on super-healthy kids from super-healthy families, which is a chore since keeping subjects from moving without sedation (not allowed) can be tricky. But, the results are showing interesting results in how fast the brain develops -- even by the age of 12.

Are you smarter than a 5th-grader?

There is a TV show called "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" that is quite interesting, as it shows adult contestants going up against standard fifth-grade students.

Why? Well, to see which group is smarter. Anyone who has seen "Jaywalking" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno knows that there are some adults here in the U.S. who just don't seem to know about various pieces many of us consider common sense. How about fifth-graders, though?

How about a version of the show called "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader in Health?" When reading this article over at WebMD, I was quite enthused, actually. What a great tangent to be explored. Want to see how you do? Try this.

Higher-IQ kids more likely to become vegetarians

In a recent study that was just concluded, 10-year-olds with higher IQ scores were found to more than likely become vegetarians by age 30.

The British-based research studied 8,170 men and women who were born in the U.K. in 1970. In 1980, the participants took an IQ test -- and 20 years later, all participants were asked whether they were currently vegetarians.

366 of the 8,170 participants said they were vegetarians, and the group included nine vegans (who eat no animal products, such as meat, dairy products, and eggs) and 123 people who called themselves vegetarians despite eating fish and chicken. Guess what? Those with higher IQ scores at age 10 were more likely to be vegetarians at age 30, with the difference in IQ points was about five points, according to the study.
