Dress for success

healthy saladI have a child who loves salad. If fact, we often make whole meals out of salad topped with shrimp. My boy is happy when I add carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and other sliced veggies on his salad, but if I even attempt to put a relatively healthy dressing on top he just about gags. He's a ranch dressing boy through and through. I'll keep offering him healthier choices, though.

After all, if you're eating a salad why add unnecessary calories with an unhealthy dressing? There are plenty of better alternatives that are every bit as tasty. Eating Light has several yummy salad dressing recipes to try:

You Are What You Eat: Groovin' on ginger!

Each week, we'll be naming a Super Food and offering unique ways to use those Super Foods that pack nutritional power. After all, you are what you eat -- make it count!

When I feel sick, when I feel nauseated, when my stomach hurts, I hit the bottle -- of ginger ale, that is. My mama always told me that ginger would make me feel better, and it does. It's not just all in my head either -- it's a well-known fact that ginger can provide relief to nausea, ulcers and other digestive issues. But that's not all -- in addition to spicing up your food and adding a one-of-a-kind flavour, ginger has lots of great health benefits.

In studies, ginger has been shown to alleviate many common ailments, including pain, swelling, inflammation and even the common cold. Got menstrual cramps? Have some ginger. Headache? Grab some ginger. Gas? Yep, you guessed it -- ginger will help. It can reduce your fever and reduce your LDL (bad) cholesterol. It's also widely believed to help slow down or even stop the spread of some cancers. Pretty impressive, huh?

Daily Fit Tip: Learn to be Sugar Savvy

We know that sugar is a dieter's number one enemy. So we diligently avoid cake, cookies and candy. We purge our kitchen of ice cream and soda. We stock up on artificial sweeteners. And yet we're still consuming sugar. But from where?

AOL Body recently revealed some surprising sources of sugar, including:

  • Deli Meats
  • Ketchup
  • Vanilla Soy Milk
  • Bagels
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Canned peas
  • Salad dressings

Are these part of your 'healthy diet'? If so, make sure you're checking the labels -- if the sugar content is too high, skip it for the sake of your shrinking waistline.

Surprising diet no-no's

When we're on a mission to lose weight, we try to choose healthier, lower calorie versions of the things we love. But what if our 'healthy' choices aren't all that healthy? Here's a list of supposedly diet-friendly foods that really aren't as good as you thought:

-Soup (Full of sodium)
-Fat-free cookies (Not calorie-free, that's for sure!)
-Pork (It is only good for you if you get lean cuts like tenderloin. No bacon!)
-Coffee (Sure, it's calorie-free, but the cream and sugar sure ain't!)
-Salad dressing (Salad is good. The dressing? Not so much.)
-Breakfast bars (Like cereal, are most likely loaded with sugar.)
-Nuts (Healthy but also extremely high in fat. Eat sparingly.)
-Dried fruit (Very calorie-dense.)
-Granola (High fat and usually has lots of sugar.)
-Juice (Not much better than soda.)

What other 'healthy foods' do you know of that really aren't that healthy at all?
