Ricky Gervais - Are His Colourful Fat Rants Funny?

Celebs & Entertainment

As the creator of the original version of The Office, not to mention several other hilarious projects, Ricky Gervais has made millions laugh their arses off. But his latest diatribe seems to be attracting more jeers than cheers. Gervais has been speaking out about obesity and gastric bypass surgery, and let's just say his comments are not being received well. Some examples:

  • "[I can't understand] why a doctor under a Hippocratic oath takes the risk of something going badly wrong, sometimes with general anaesthetic, because someone can't be bothered to go for a f---ing run. I want to say to them, 'You lazy f---ing fat pig. Just go for a run and stop eating burgers. You might f---ing die."
  • "Gay people are born that way. They didn't work at becoming gay. Fat people became fat because they would rather be that way than stop eating so much."
  • "I laugh about being fat, but I should be ashamed. I should walk down the street and have people shouting 'Fatty!'. That's what I want, to get me out of it."

Well, at least he acknowledges his own weight issues too. Your thoughts?

This star won't work out in public

Martha recently told us that British comedy star Ricky Gervais is OK with being called fat. Go ahead, call him a fatty, he says. Maybe it will make him more ashamed of his overweight status. Maybe it will get him into a gym, for goodness sake -- a home gym, that is.

Gervais, 47, says he never works out in public. In fact, he and his girlfriend just bought a place in New York with a gym in the basement. His favorite workout: "My favorite thing in the world is to come home, have a swim, put my pajamas on and open a bottle of wine," he says. "That's it for me."

Maybe it's the mirrors found in gyms that drive Gervais to his basement. Once a fan of staring at himself in the mirror, he now finds the practice quite disappointing.

How about you? Like public gyms? How about mirrors?

Ricky Gervais wants you to call him a fatty

Celebs & Entertainment

Ricky Gervais, the comedic mastermind behind shows like The Office, has recently made an interesting plea: He wants fat people to be stigmatized and forced into healthy habits. Says Gervais: "I don't think there's enough stigma. With all the political correctness now, and the fact that food is so refined, there's no stigma any more."

That's not all -- in this article from the Telegraph, he adds, "In supermarkets, the really fattening stuff should be behind a really thin door. Shops should be full of salads but if you want to get to the pies and cakes, you've got to crawl through a little tube."
