Rheumatoid arthritis? You might ease the pain by going vegan

Rheumatoid arthritis played a big role in my house growing up -- my dad suffered from it and when I say suffered, I mean suffered. Horribly. He struggled with everyday things--writing, chores, walking down the stairs--and just couldn't do many of the physical activities he used to. So if you have the disease, I really feel for you.

However, here's some potentially hopeful news: Recent studies are showing that adopting a vegan, non-gluten diet can help ease the pain of rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help prevent heart disease and strokes in those with arthritis. According to the findings, arthritis sufferers on a vegan diet had lower levels of C reactive protein, a compound that is related to levels of inflammation in the body.

The bad news is that a vegan, non-gluten diet involved cutting out all animal products (including meat and dairy) and many common grains. What can you eat? Lots of nuts, seeds, fruits and veggies.

Arthritis drugs increase skin cancer risk?

Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most messy diseases to deal with on a daily basis for most. The inability to physically grasp objects with force and the pain can be a nightmare for many. Consequently, pain drugs are up front in the medicine cabinets of most sufferers.

Drugs such as etanercept or infliximab, however, may be putting themselves at an increased risk for skin cancer. The risk increase is slight, but it's still there (according to research released this week).

In what I rarely hear from drug companies and especially researchers, the report stated that the risk was probably not significant enough to outweigh the benefits of taking both drugs to combat rheumatoid arthritis on a daily basis.

Green tea may ease rheumatoid arthritis pain

Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers may soon have a new non-drug option to help alleviate their joint pain. A recent study found that, in laboratory tests, an ingredient in green tea called EGCG blocked a protein that is known to cause inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

The test was carried out in the lab, not in people, so researchers caution the findings are preliminary and they can't yet recommend that arthritis sufferers run out and start drinking green tea. But they went on to say that, since green tea has many health benefits and no known side effects, it won't hurt if you want to try it and your doctor agrees.

Just how much green tea should you drink? One researcher recommended three to four servings a day. That's a lot of tea, but if it reduces your pain it just may be worth it.
