Got a Table of Temptation - PDA Your Way to Wise Choices

personal digital assistantThat Thanksgiving spread will soon face you. And what will you do? Stuff your face? Or proceed with caution? I suppose the stuffing-your-face approach is OK if you keep the practice to random days, like this one reserved for giving thanks (for good food, right?). But if you're keen on keeping your cool on the calorie front, you might want to try this trick for navigating your table of temptation. All you'll need is a PDA -- I'm not talking a personal display of affection (save that for the mistletoe). Nope, a personal digital assistant is the tool you need.

So you've got a yummy slice of pumpkin pie in your sight. Here's what you do: Grab that PDA and type in calorieking.com/mobile. When you land at your destination, type in "pumpkin pie" and click "Go." Immediately, some pumpkin pie options will pop up. Just pick your pie and all sorts of nutritional facts will appear before your very eyes. I just tried this quick search and went with a Sara Lee Oven Fresh frozen pumpkin pie. Here's the scoop: One slice has 260 calories, 37 g of carbohydrates, 11 g of fat, 4 g or protein, and 2 g of fiber. No mention of sugar, but believe me, it's in there.

What do you think -- do you grab that pumpkin pie or let the moment pass? It's up to you and Calorie King to decide.

Phone alerts keep exercisers in line

My husband wants me to get a phone with an alarm on it because he's tired of hearing me complain when I forget something. He uses one to prompt him on sorts of matters -- upcoming meetings, birthdays, and to-do list items. Clearly, it works better than my paper lists do, so I think I'll let him trade in my cell phone for one with more bells and whistles. I'll use it for all my important dates and deadlines -- and maybe for my exercise plans too.

A new Stanford study found that people who used gadgets like iPhones and BlackBerries to monitor their fitness routines were more likely to stick with their workouts. Check this out: 37 non-exercisers were put into two groups. The first group was prompted twice a day to log their activity levels and set exercise goals. Those who didn't respond received three more alerts. The second group, well, they got educational handouts on exercise. Any guesses on what happened? After eight weeks, the PDA users had exercised about five hours per week. The others: Only two hours per week.

Two reasons I need a spiffy new phone: I'll stay more organized, and I'll stay in shape too.

Monitor your own wounds with this laser-equipped PDA

I'll admit, I generally avoid going to the doctor if at all possible. I know this isn't a very good idea, and that -- regardless of the time lost, money spent, and personal discomfort -- it's generally better to be safe than sorry when it comes to comes to my personal health.

However, I have the feeling that I'm not alone. So, for people like us, here's a handy little device that'll help to keep us safe while we "walk it off."

The Aranz Medical Silhouette PDA allows even the novice user to record how a wound is healing in a consistent manner, by taking laser-guided photographs of your burn, cut, or funky-looking lesion. Then, as the wound heals over time, the device creates a Wound Measurement Report, which you can use to track progress.

Hopefully you're not injured enough to need something like this, but just in case you're accident-prone, it might be worth checking out.

New massage invented to cure "BlackBerry Thumb" for PDA users

I think it's safe to say it's time for a vacation when you're using your PDA so much you get "BlackBerry Thumb." Apparently the Hyatt Hotel was getting so many complaints of hand and arm discomfort from its business patrons owning BlackBerrys and Treos that it has begun offering a new massage, the "BlackBerry Balm," designed to release tension specifically in the thumbs, wrists, and arms.

When I first read this article I thought "BlackBerry Thumb" sounded like a gimmick invented by the hotel chain to sell massages, but surprisingly it is a legitimate condition recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association. Experts believe the condition will become more and more common as technology advances and buttons get smaller.

The massage lasts about 30 minutes and costs about $30 -- I guess it's just the price you pay for technology and convenience.
