Fish oil prevents plaque in Alzheimer's patients

UCLA researchers this week said that we all need a fish oil fatty acid to ensure we have the internal tools to make a plaque-fighting protein that could help prevent Alzheimer's Disease.

That's comforting -- but if you can afford it, a good supplement regimen of Omega-3 oils is great for just about everyone from teenage years up.

Specifically, choose a fish oil product with plenty of DHA, which was found to stimulate the brain into making more of a brain protein called LR11 that is associated with Alzheimer's Disease.

Texas becomes top pecan-producing state

In my area of the country, pecan season is well under way. There is no better activity on an October afternoon than to find a few pecans trees and pick your own pecans.

They're delicious, great for you and can be used in a wide variety of recipes. With that said, recent figures peg Texas as the state with the largest amount of pecan production, even before past leaders New Mexico and Georgia.

A late-year surge in pecan production this year gave Texas the top spot, with 47 million pounds of pecan production thus far. Ever eaten raw, non-processed pecans? They are the best and retain all of nature's nutrients -- just make sure you have a few nutcrackers handy!

Fish oil can help premature babies

Are your eyes indicative of your overall health? Many scientists and informed nutritionists think so. With nutrition so attached to the way our bodies function inside, the eyesight of premature babies is being studied as ways to stop a disease that can create vision problems in those specific infants.

The eyelids of premature babies can be affected by a disease that can even lead to permanent blindness if not corrected. The solution? Replacing components generally gleaned from a pregnant mom to these babies to mimic when happens in the uterus.

The abnormal growth of blood vessels in premature babies (and others as well) can be possibly halted by the use of Omega-3 fatty acids, say scientists. Surprised? With the known health benefits fatty acids bring to adults, perhaps this is not a surprise at all.

Pistachios lower cholesterol?

Walnuts, pecans, peanuts -- oh my. Nuts are a great way to get that healthy "good" fat while eating something that is pretty tasty (as long as you don't have allergies). What about exotic nuts like pistachios or macadamias?

It's been reported that pistachios could help lower cholesterol, which to be honest is not that surprising. It seems like most good food originating from nature is rarely bad for human consumption. That is, compared to processed oils like hydrogenated palm oil and the like.

Are you a pistachio fan? Although I eat them rarely (peanuts are my fave), this may be a great way to start on another healthy habit. Instead of those Oreo cookies, get "nuts".

Fish oil + Statin drugs = heart failure protection?

A new Japanese study suggests that those who take high doses of fish oil and statin drugs at the same time had fewer heart attacks and cardiovascular problems than those taking drugs alone.

Statins, commonly used to lower 'bad' cholesterol levels and keep those levels safe, are used by millions across the world to ensure their cholesterol levels stay within a normal range. Although there are many natural alternatives to keeping cholesterol levels healthy, pharmaceutical drugs are one of the most popular methods.

Adding a healthy dose of Omega-3 oil-containing fish oil would naturally seem to help high cholesterol sufferers keep cholesterol levels in check and help prevent heart failure, and it seems obvious that combining two cholesterol-fighting substances would produce better results that from a single method.

Good fat is fine for heart attack survivors

I am a fan of using olive oil as my preferred cooking oil for just about everything, from stir-fry to that occasional "toasted" wheat bread and turkey sandwich. Olive oil is a great source of Omega-3 "healthy" and fatty oils (a reason a I use it), and new research shows that a diet rich in these kinds of oils can be just as good as a standard low-fat diet suggested for those who have had heart attacks.

The study found that people on either diet had one-third the risk of suffering another heart attack, a stroke, death or other heart problem compared with heart patients eating in the usual (read: bad) way.

There are ways to prepare and cook very healthy meals that have great taste once you've researched what to do -- and if you've had a heart attack, eating right (without losing taste) is probably a top priority.

Study: Omega 3 oils don't fight depression

Although I am a huge fan of taking Omega-3 oils every day as part of my supplement regimen, I've always been intrigued by reports that this healthy oil can help those suffering from depression.

New research points out that this may not be true, however. In fact, the research says that there is no evidence that omega-3 fatty acids -- on their own -- fight depression.

This flies in the face of prior research that concluded there was a definite association between omega-3 levels and behavior and mood disorders, including depression.

This seems to be yet another study that contradicts an earlier study - so what is to believe? It's hard to say -- but consumption of healthy Omega-3 oils is good regardless.
