Bertinelli vs. Osmond - Battle of the Diets

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

valerie bertinelli and marie osmond
I love a good weight loss story -- not the scary skinny stuff, but the kind of diet and fitness revamp that delivers long-lasting and healthy change. You know, like what Valerie Bertinelli and Marie Osmond did -- they both lost about 50 pounds and got way fit, hopefully for the long haul. I'm sure you've seen these hot mommas on magazine covers, chatting it up with Oprah and promoting books. And now, Valerie and Marie are facing off over whose diet is better.

While both diets feature pre-packaged, low-calorie frozen foods, Valerie says Jenny Craig has the best tasting food. It's just a fact, she says. Marie prefers NutriSystem because she doesn't want to measure her food or go to weigh-in meetings. She also would never pose in a bikini at her age (both women are 49), like Valerie did for People magazine. "Good for her, if that makes her happy. That would not make me happy," says Marie. "And I am not doing it, you know, I am not. I don't want to see a 49-year-old woman in a bikini. No."

Bikini or not, it's clear both women have whipped their bodies into pretty good shape. But do their diets have staying power? I mean, when and if these stars decide to wean themselves off their regimented plans, can they transition to real-world eating and hang on to what they've gained, er, lost? Kirstie Alley couldn't do it. Let's hope Valerie and Marie can.

Have you ever tried Jenny Craig or NutriSystem? How did they work for you?

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

Larry the Cable Guy, also known as Dan Whitney, has happily shed 50 pounds on the NutriSystem diet. On celebrating this huge milestone, the comedian says: "I immediately took my wife out to eat and had everything I'm not supposed to."

The Blue Collar comedian, whose new big-screen comedy, Witless Protection opened on Friday, works out twice a day and travels with a personal trainer while on tour. His workout routine includes weight training, 50 minutes of cardio early in the day and 50 minutes of cardio later in the day.

The once 282-pounder blames his wife's recent pregnancy for his weight gain.

"She'd crave a double cheeseburger, order two bites of it and then I'd eat the rest," he says. "I couldn't let it go to waste!"

How much does it cost to lose weight?

Diet & Weight Loss

As 2007 gives way to 2008, many people are going to resolve to finally lose weight, and, tired of unsuccessful diets, many of them will sign up for one of the popular dieting plans out there. But diets are expensive. Want to know just how expensive? The Consumerist recently looked into this -- here's what the popular diets cost per month on average:

  • Atkins Diet: $402
  • Diet To Go (1600 Calories): $524
  • Diet To Go (1200 Calories): $468
  • Dr Siegal Cookie Diet: $224
  • Dr Sears Zone Diet : $371
  • Jenny Craig: $551
  • MediFast: $275
  • NutriSystem: $294
  • Ornish Diet: $299
  • Slim Fast: $310
  • South Beach Diet: $314
  • Sonoma Diet: $274

Wow -- that's a lot of moola, and some of them don't even include the cost of food. What do you think -- is it worth it? Or are we being ripped off by the diet industry?

Family Ties star welcomes baby, new body

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

You may remember her as Jennifer on the classic TV show Family Ties or as the 34-year old wife and mom struggling to lose weight on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club 4. What you should remember now is that Tina Yothers has made some pretty impressive health and fitness strides. She just had a baby on September 24, in fact, and at her five-month pregnancy mark, she weighed less than she did when she first stepped on the Fit Club scale.

Mom to an almost two-year-old daugther and two sons from her husband's previous marriage, Yothers says, "I was triple this size when I was pregnant with Lilly since I only worked out my hand and mouth."

What joy Yothers must be experiencing. A new baby boy -- Jake -- and a new body. Yothers, who says her weight loss is due to a modified NutriSystem diet and working out three days a week, arrived at a bikini-ready body last October. I think congrats are in order all around.

Can you put a price on a 30-pound weight loss?

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

How much does it cost to lose 30 pounds? That's a very good question. Cut calories and start walking everywhere and you might find that you actually save money. But if you're looking to invest in a weight loss program, it might do you some good to shop around. Here's a snapshot of what 30 pounds will cost you, should you decide to pay someone else to help you.

The article reviews the cost of 5 programs: Jenny Craig, L.A. Weight Loss, NutriSystem, Weight Watchers, and the Zone Diet (gourmet delivery only, you can also buy the Zone Diet book and lose weight on your own for "free".) The numbers are considerable -- sign up fees in the hundreds of dollars, weekly maintenance fees, and daily food costs. Diet-Blog does a great job of breaking down the numbers into a very readable format.

Being the kind of person who is incapable of following a food plan conceived by someone else, I've never tried any of these programs. If you have, drop us a line and let us know what you thought. Did you lose weight? Did they teach you life-long skills for maintaining the weight? Was it money well spent? Leave your thoughts in comments!

Nutrisystem: a great concept

Nutrition & Supplements

Have you seen those Nutrisystem advertisements on TV recently? That system, which looks rather good in many respects, appeals to the side of you that wants to have perfectly-proportioned meals supplied that will give you nutrition while shedding pounds over time.

The meals look sensible (except for Sucralose being used at will) and the system is a great alternative for those that don't have the time to prepare a complete nutritional menu each and every day.

The company's financials haven't been so good lately, but I still believe, from what I've researched at their website, that the Nutrisystem system is a good one. What do you think?

Can your horoscope help you find the best diet plan?

Diet & Weight Loss

There are so many "diet plans" and "weight-loss systems" out there it's no wonder anybody successfully loses any weight, ever. Are you overwhelmed by the options and looking for a simple way to "narrow the field" to just a few choices? Well, if you're the sort that checks your horoscope weekly for love and career advice, you might consider getting weight-loss advice as well through these dieting ideas based on your astrological sign.

Are you a Gemini with social butterfly tendencies? Then Weight-Watchers might be the thing for you because you'll drop pounds while meeting and mingling with new people, and get group support. If you're a Capricorn the suggested plan is The Grapefruit Diet because you've probably got willpower to spare. And if you're an impatient fire-sign, like Leo, the 6-Day Body Makeover could be your ticket to success.

For me the article suggests NutriSystem, which sounds great except I'm not sure if I can afford pre-made meals every night. Is there a category for Cancer, on a budget?
