NYC chain restaurant menus will soon have calorie counts

Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

When it comes to informing restaurant customers about the actual nutrition information contained in those steaks and burgers, no other city in the U.S. has taken the consumer advocate role more than New York City.

As such, the city's Board of Health has voted to require all chain restaurants within the NYC city limits to post calorie information on each item on all their menus. This comes after months of litigation and griping by restaurant owners who fear that actually informing customers about the high calories they eat will drive business away.

Although many national chains already post calorie counts and other nutritional information in booklets and on websites for all customers to view, the inclusion of this information on menus will reach all customers. At least, the ones that read menus.

The changes, due to take effect March 31, will include all restaurants that have more than 15 outlets within New York City. Don't expect further litigation to go away, though. Some food sources would probably do anything rather than inform customers about the details on the food they eat.
