How to set goals for weight loss
Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss
Diet experts often say that having goals is crucial to successful weight loss. But what does having a goal really mean? It isn't just saying "I want to weigh X amount of pounds." Instead, it's having clear, concise, measurable goals that you can meet both immediately, in the short-term, and in the long-term as well. This is perhaps one of the best articles on setting goals that I've seen this New Year, and also includes a helpful link for further goal setting tips. Having a vague, future goal when starting a weight loss plan may be ok for the first few days, but when the going gets tough, you need a plan to fall back on.
What are your goals for the New Year?
Life Fit Chat: Journaling for success
Life Fit Chat with That's Fit Life Fit Expert Laura Lewis brings conversation provoking tidbits to your table, served up with a touch of spice! Byte-sized information that pack some punch, brought to you every Wednesday and Thursday! You have most likely decided on your resolutions for 2008. Now for the tough part ... keeping them! I believe journaling is a great way to help you in the quest for resolution follow through. The process of journaling is an excellent exercise for tracking your success and understanding your behavioral patterns.
The key to journaling in a useful way is to honestly explore your emotions and attitudes as you challenge yourself physically and spiritually. In order to create real change, we have to get outside of our comfort zone and rarely does that actually feel good. Each time you attempt to change a behavior, I recommend journaling about that topic every day for at least six weeks. Everyday explore what the change was (behavior, change in diet, change in fitness regime, etc.) and freely write about the mental and emotional process of making that change as you successfully move through each day a slightly changed person. Through this process you will learn so much about yourself and will actually get to the root of why your new year resolution is important to you.
When you journal explore the following:
- Did I accomplish my goal today? If so, what actions helped me to stay focused and committed? If not, what actions prevented my success.
- How did I feel about my success/failure in accomplishing my goal today?
- What are the tangible results of my actions?
- What motivated me today?
- What acted as a de-motivator?
- Am I placing myself in situations that support my desire for change or negate my desire for change?
- Am I changing for myself or for some other reason?
- How do I feel about myself today?

I am constantly amazed at how quickly the year flew by, and yet when I stop to think about it, I am amazed at how much happened in that short time. I have always found this first week to be a truly inspiring time, as well as an exciting time as I ponder the many adventures awaiting me.
So what did you accomplish this year? It is pretty easy to say "not much," but if you spend some time thinking about it, you will probably be rather amazed. So, I challenge you to do just that ... make a list. Don't stop until you have ten solid accomplishments that you feel give you bragging rights! And then, go ahead and brag. I mean, you did really do all that! So go ahead and be proud of yourself.
A friend of mine recently shared a book, Hello Lucky, written by her friend Sam Wilder, managing partner of Housetrends magazine. Hello Lucky is a wonderful and inspiring compilation of Sam's life experiences, hard earned wisdom and funny photography that takes the reader through a light-hearted but serious look at his or her own life and begs the question ... "Are you making this life worth living?" Or, as the world renowned metaphysical teacher Miceal Ledwith might ask, "Will it be back to the diapers for you?" In his book, Sam challenges the reader to make a bold list of lifetime accomplishments. And, don't cheat yourself by making it a short list. Be brave. Be bold. Be audacious. Make a list that will make your life worth living ... and then go out and live it! And let today be the first day of your new brave, bold, audacious life.
Happy New Year!
