Sun in your eyes

Are you hitting the beach during the holiday weekend? If so, don't forget to protect your eyes from the sun! While it's always important to lather on the sunscreen before heading out, it's equally important to protect your eyes from UV rays.

Numerous eye problems can result from sun damage. Young people especially need to remember to wear eye protection as they tend to be outdoors in the bright sunlight more than their adult counterparts. A good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses is you first line protection, but wide-brimmed hats can also provide some shade.

An American Optometric Association survey revealed that 40% of Americans don't consider UV protection an important criteria in sunglasses. It is important. Look for sunglasses that block out 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Why holiday drivers make this weekend dangerous

Traffic jamI used to live in the southern, more metropolitan, part of my state. I dreaded the holiday weekends when, like everyone else on the road, I was battling the northbound traffic. I used to think of different plans -- I'll leave late, late, late on Friday night or I'll wake up at 5 am and hit the road. Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one coming up with those plans to beat the traffic, and I was usually stuck anyway.

Not surprisingly, my late night/early morning commutes weren't very safe. According to the National Sleep Foundation, far too many Americans are too tired to drive safely. In a recent poll, 36% of respondents admitted to either feeling drowsy while driving or actually falling asleep at the wheel. Driving at odd hours to beat traffic just increases the risk of driving while you're not alert.

So be careful this weekend -- don't get behind the wheel if you're not at your best.

Who says you can't eat healthfully and still have a burger? Burgers are standard Memorial Day fare -- and treats throughout the summer. But, with some tasteful substitutions, you can have your burger and eat it too. Shape Magazine has a list of their five top burgers:
You can also try modifying the traditional burger by using ground turkey instead of beef, opting for whole-grain buns, trying a veggie burger, loading up on veggies, and choosing healthy condiments.

A healthier Memorial Day celebration

Chicken and veggies on grillLike many families do, my family always gathers at my parent's house for a Memorial Day grill-out. Unfortunately, the ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and brownies can leave us feeling a little weighted down. If your family or friends get together for a grill out, too, why not try some healthier Memorial Day fare? Some ideas:
  • Marinade chicken in low-fat Italian dressing before grilling.
  • Grill skewers of shrimp and veggies.
  • Cut thick wedges of zucchini and summer squash, lightly brush with olive oil, and grill.
  • Make cole slaw with shredded red and green cabbage, a little salt, a little sugar, some rice vinegar, and a little olive oil.
  • Serve sliced veggies with low-fat dip.
  • Make hummus and serve with whole-wheat pita wedges.
  • Slice peaches and plums in half, lightly brush with olive oil, and grill. Sprinkle them with cinnamon and serve by themselves or with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Instead of soda, sweet tea, or sugary lemonade, serve ice-cold water but make it fun for the holiday by freezing melon balls and using them as ice cubes.
