Working in the Workouts: Kids can count your reps

My daughter loves to count. She can get beyond 20 these days. "Helping" is another thing she adores. "Mommy, I help you cook." "Mommy, I help you fix that." And on, and on.

So I was delighted to come across a great tip today that makes use of both of these favorite activities. It comes from a special section of Workouts for You devoted to exercising with kids. Most of the ideas on the list are actually things I've written about in this series already. But here's the new one: involve your kids while you strength train at home by letting them count your reps out loud for you and/or clock your rest time in-between sets. You can incorporate the task into doing a few push-ups or sit-ups or while using dumb bells. Squats or leg lifts too.

Sometimes our old brains forget the simple things kids find fun. And it's a big bonus when that fun truly translates to "Mommy, I help you work out!" And it's the truth!

Working in the Workouts: It's in the details

Last week, I wrote about making every moment count when you are exercising, and not just trying to get through your workout. In that spirit, I have been thinking about ways to re-motivate with this in mind.

I've come up with a few things I have been trying that really make my workouts go that extra mile. They aren't huge things, but small things that allow me to challenge myself and help me focus on maximizing every exercise.

  • Hold the last leg lift as long as you can, then raise higher and do the same, then a third time.
  • I run a little more each time I do a walking workout. I've started wearing my digital watch again when I exercise and I use it to focus my walking. Now I time how long I run within my walks and try to make the time longer with each jaunt. Or sometimes I just make more running intervals.
  • When I am holding Boat Pose, I challenge myself to hold it for five seconds longer than I think I possibly could, and then two more seconds. Yowza!
What helps challenge you to always do your best while working out?

The longer I do this renewed fitness thing, the more I realize that there really are no excuses for doing absolutely nothing. Man, was I lame! Now that I have crossed back over to the other side after an exercise hiatus, I am dumbfounded as to how I could have let life get in the way so much that I completely stopped everything.

Really? You think you are so busy that you don't have time for any exercise at all? I say . . . impossible! I really haven't made exercise a top priority; I merely added it to the long list and I make sure that I am sticking with the pieces I have made routine and that I think about how to fit in more every day. So in that spirit . . .
