Earn Your Best Biceps

Fit Kicks Videos, Fitness

Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Obama and Vin Diesel all have one thing in common: Great biceps. They're also the names I hear most often from new clients who are eager to improve upon this most prominent body part. Our bellies and booties are super important in the game of creating a great physique, but those parts are usually covered up. Sleek and sexy arms are often on display in the board room and at the beach. Now's the time to make yours great!

In this video, I tell you how the bicep works and share a few pieces of equipment you can use to train them. I expect everyone to choose a challenging weight -- 5-pound dumbbells are rarely enough for anyone. Choose a weight that makes you grunt a bit -- it's OK to work hard. After a few weeks, go get some tank tops!

Cheryl Cole's Extreme Diet

Celebs & Entertainment

British glam girl and pop star Cheryl Cole recently resolved to gain weight in the new year after her stick-thin frame caused an outcry from her fans. But Cole, 25, admits to reporters that things weren't always this way -- the singer has done her fair share of dieting. Her approach of choice? She goes low carb with the Atkin's diet when her weight gets a bit out of control. Keep in mind that, for Cole, being heavy means having a 29-inch waist. Good Lord.

"In the first year of Girls Aloud, I went up to a 29in waist. I remember crying because I was 133lbs when I'm only 5ft 3in," she says. "Jennifer Aniston was doing the Atkins diet at the time and I thought I'd give it a try. I remember I ate the same thing -- chicken in cream sauce with a couple of carrots -- every night for weeks. I felt just horrible, but I was on this mission."

Cheryl, honey, 133 lbs is not worth crying over.

Jennifer Aniston's Favourite Yoga Pose

Celebs & Entertainment

Jennifer Aniston is incredibly fit -- but did she get that way through yoga? I have my doubts. When asked recently what her favourite yoga pose is, the 39-year-old told reporters at People Magazine, "I'm so terrible with names ... Child pose. And it's a mix between that and Tree pose. [Tree] has good balance and I like how it feels."

Child's pose? For all your non-yogis, that's the resting pose, the one you do in between other more difficult poses. So saying it's your favourite pose is kind of like saying recess was your favourite subject in school. In other words? A total cop out.

Don't get me wrong, I love child's pose and I'm not trying to rag on Jen, but I don't think hours of child's pose is what got her into such great shape. Want to know what does help her get in shape? Jacki shared the scoop on Jen's fitness routine a while back.

Jennifer Aniston - Whoa!

Celebs & Entertainment

Jennifer AnistonLook at that body. Just look at it. I've been looking for a bit, pretending it's mine and realizing I'm far from such perfection. If that were me sitting to your right, you'd see a bit of cellulite on the legs, a little love on my handles, a few scars on the side of one breast, a scattering of little blue radiation tattoos in the general boob area and one very obvious tummy tuck scar, running from hip to hip (hey, don't judge, I had two 10-pound babies who did a real number on my belly ). Nope, I'm no Jennifer Aniston. That's OK. She can have all the glory. I'm happy for her. Really.

Jennifer, the 39-year-old former Friend and movie star too, hides behind nothing more than a necktie, her hands and a bent leg on her new GQ cover. Apparently one sassy interview is tucked into the pages of this glossy publication (check it out when the mag arrives on stands December 23), and it seems this beauty has lots to say about boyfriend John Mayer.

"Honestly, did not know much about him before I met him," she says. "I'd heard ... you know, uh 'Your Body' – that song. But what I can say is that I had no idea what an extraordinary musician he is. And it's just great to sit and be witness to that. It's kind of like, Whoa!"

Whoa! Must be what Mr. Mayer thinks when he looks at this goddess. How can he not?

Jennifer Aniston - she's trim and toned now but once called exercise cruel and unusual

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Jennifer Aniston is now a fan of fitness.

I love exercise and would never call it cruel or unusual. Jennifer Aniston once did, though. Hard to believe when you look at her trim and toned body, right? Well, times have changed, and the one-time Friends star now embraces the whole idea of fitness.

How does she hang on to such an enviable body? Moderation and variety are key. She does a little bit of everything and is very moderate, which makes for a routine that is manageable and consistent. Of late, this is what she's been doing: Three to four times a week, Jennifer does 20 minutes of cardio followed by 30 to 40 minutes of yengar-based hatha yoga, which focuses on alignment, breath, and inner awareness. Sun salutations and basic poses like half-moon, standing splits, and pigeon have given her primo results. On other days, Jennifer uses the elliptical machine for a low-impact routine.

While Jen eats as well as she exercises -- three healthy, low-carb meals a day for her and apparently, she's got a thing for Smart Water too -- she's not against an occasional splurge and isn't afraid to admit she's fan of the double cheeseburger with onions from In-N-Out Burger. She also makes her own signature guacamole and margarita treat and can throw down as many as three dirty martinis now and then. Says Ginnifer Goodwin, who costars with Jen in He's Just Not That Into You: "An actress's diet can be coffee and cigarettes." And this is not what Jen is about.

Cycling: It's chic again ... and expensive

Fitness, Reviews & Products

Forget too-tight bike shorts and geeky-looking cycling accessories -- biking is now considered the chic new way to get fit. That's right -- it may not be a new way to work out, but it's highly fashionable these days. Hot celebs like Agyness Deyn, Chloe Sevigny and Jennifer Aniston are apparently new owners of fancy bikes, according to the Daily Mail.

According to Caz Nicklin of CycleChic.co.uk, "There is nothing more glamorous than gliding down the street in a lovely floaty dress. It's almost as if we have come full circle. In its day, cycling was groundbreaking for women. It brought us trousers and meant we could go places on our own. Now, it's back again as a stylish pastime."

So stylish, in fact, that you can buy Chanel and Gucci bikes -- with a price tag of about $9600 and $3300, respectively. Wow -- that's quite an expensive pasttime. My $50 garage-sale bike might not be as fashionable but it's just as good for a workout.

What's to eat for Cameron Diaz and friends

Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

Burritos anyone? Cameron Diaz will take one, and did take one -- a breakfast burrito -- the other morning after working out at the Gym on Nemo in West Hollywood. The fitness nut also had a full fat latte. The secret is out: Some stars really do eat.

VH1's Rock of Love reality star Bret Michaels -- you know, the Poison Every-Rose-Has-Its-Thorn singer -- was also spotted chowing down recently. Michaels indulged in a little southern cooking -- BBQ grilled chicken, cornbread, and ribs.

What do other celebrities really like to eat? According to this blog, Jennifer Aniston is a lover of Mexican food, Tom Cruise opts for Italian, and Angelina Jolie is a sucker for McDonalds, Cheerios, and tequila. Britney Spears: Give the girl some pasta, cookie dough ice cream, hot dogs, and her mom's chicken and dumplings.

Here at That's Fit, we're constantly telling you what we think about things, but sometimes it's nice to know what you think. So from time to time, we'll ask you a question. Don't be afraid to speak up -- we love feedback.

There's no doubt about it -- 2007 was a year for fitness. So many celebs shaped up and showed off their moves and I say good for them -- they're influencing thousands to get off the couch and get fit.

So my question for you is: Who was your favourite fit celeb of 2007? The choices are listed below. My personal choice? I think Felicity Huffman rocks -- running a Triathlon on the day of the Emmy's? That's fairly awe-inspiring if you ask me.

Getting on the fitness wagon

Ah, diets. We try them on and throw them off like clothing. They are as disposable and transient as this season's MUST HAVE hand bag or shoes. Research has shown over and over again how often diets fail, how many of them are only designed to work in the short term if they do at all. Yet we keep coming back to them like two people in a bad relationship who just can't let go, setting ourselves up for even more of the same disappointment we've already encountered.

Remember the cabbage soup diet? It was the diet that prescribed making cabbage soup from a specific recipe and eating it at least twice a day for at least a month if not forever. As you can imagine, even for those of us who like cabbage soup, it got old really fast.

Or, how about the high-protein diet, the Atkins Diet, or as some colleagues refer to it, the Diet of Doom? It's the one where you eat relatively little else other than meat--at least, that's how most users of the diet interpreted it. My mom was one such user. Being on the Atkins Diet was her excuse to have bacon--yes, bacon, fried, artery-clogging, bacon--at every meal. Gross. Results? Well, she did initially lose some weight, most of which she appears to have gained back. Miraculously none of her other health issues were resolved and she got really tired of eating so much darned meat. Although she's still obsessed by bacon.

She, and most others who try dieting, "fell off" the diet sooner rather than later. I've been subject to this phenomenon myself. I went in for the whole low-carb thing. I remember sitting at lunch over a bunless veggie burger lamenting the death of my tastebuds. Sure, I lost some weight, but it was more because the food I ate totally lacked in appeal rather than through some miraculous chemical process in my system. Turns out I also wasn't eating enough. I ate probably half the calories I was supposed to be eating, so I was tired and cranky all the time. The low-carb diet should have been named the "thinner but meaner" diet. And naturally I fell off. I think it was around the time I reignited my love affair with Little Italy.

There are many reasons why dieters fall off the dieting wagon. Those can be found here. So what's a person to do? If dieting is an endless cycle of withholding and disappointment, how can we resolve to get back on the wagon to stay, to break the cycle of falling off? My answer is a simple one: we're on the WRONG wagon.

Several years ago I left the dieting wagon for the fitness wagon. It lurks nearby the diet wagon, seemingly in its shadow. The fitness wagon is an oasis in the desert of the diet wagon, able to be seen only by those who are willing to take on the LIFETIME COMMITMENT to being healthy. I found the oasis when I got tired of not being able to eat anything I really enjoyed eating, when rewarding myself for a dieting job done well made me feel guilty. I'd eat "right"--which is to say cabbage soup or basically NO carbs--all week, then treat myself with a scoop of ice cream on Saturday night and feel miserable for having given in. That was just irrational thinking, probably born of having not eaten enough!

I stopped reading about the latest fad diets, or whatever it was Jennifer Aniston was doing to keep so skeletally thin, and started reading about nutrition. I stopped looking at supermodels as my role models and considered how healthy, active and happy all the people running around the park by my house looked. They seemed to truly ENJOY huffing it around those 3.3 miles every day. Yes, they were out there nearly every day. I, feeling miserable, wanted what they had, and realized it was all within my grasp, if only I'd get on the right wagon.

You, too can find the fitness wagon. Start by promising yourself to never, ever, EVER go on a fad diet again. Stop thinking about how you compare to celebrities and whether or not you can run--or even walk--a mile. Stop telling yourself it's a good idea to eat cabbage soup or anything more than once a week and start hunting for healthy recipes you can make yourself. Most importantly, come to grips with the reality that fitness is not something that comes in a week, but is the cumulative work of a lifetime. Commit to fitness, not diets, and experience the oasis for yourself.

Fit Factor: Get fit to the core with Pilates

A few years ago, when the yoga class at my gym was full, I decided to try Pilates. At the time, I was doing 100 crunches a day and working out frequently, and I thought it would be a piece of cake for me. I was wrong. While I found that the abdominal strength I already had helped me through the class, the class wasn't really about strength; it was about endurance, namely the ability to hold a pose for a while and move slowly through the movements. That was the hard part for me, and it's something I still struggle with, years later.

These days, pilates is trendy, practiced among many A-list celebrities like Jennifer Aniston. It's a great class for beginners, but I think it has even greater benefits for people who are already active. Until I took pilates, I never realized how big a role my core plays in everything I do. Since I've taken pilates, I'm much more aware of my core strength and try to integrate it into every sport and activity I participate in. Using my core, I'm better at many things, including wakeboarding, snowboarding, volleyball and even yoga. I'm hoping to try surfing this year and know my core will play a huge part in that so I better start preparing.
