5 fitness tips from another Lalanne

Fitness

Jack LaLanne is known as the godfather of fitness, but don't think he's the only person in his family leading the fitness revolution. Chris LaLanne, Jack's grand-nephew, is spreading the word about the importance of fitness, and whether it's because of his famous last name or the fact that he really knows what he's talking about, people are listening.

He's developed a perfect workout formula, and it's not that different from the kind of workout Jack himself would prescribe. Here are five workout tips:

  • Jump rope. It's cheap, easy and effective.
  • Mix it up. Routine and boredom will be a drain on your energy level.
  • Stick to the basics: Push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and so on.
  • Make it intense. It's better to do less reps of more weight than vice versa.
  • Stretch before and after every workout.

Jack LaLanne tells Britney to shape up

He's the Godfather of physical fitness and at age 93, Jack LaLanne has a lifetime of wisdom at the tip of his tongue. Some of it, he's sharing with Britney Spears.

Ultimately, Spears' life is up to her, says LaLanne. She has to develop pride and discipline in herself. But if she's up for some advice, LaLanne has some.

  • Spears should take the lollipop out of her mouth. Sugar is toxic.

  • Spears should put the right fuel in her machine, not the stuff she's currently feeding herself -- like cigarettes.

  • Spears should make fitness a top priority.

Healthy habits ideally should begin when we're young, says the man who is on a national book tour -- he co-authors the book Fiscal Fitness with retirement financial advisor Matthew J. Rettick. But we can surely make good on our mistakes as we get older.

We all might learn a thing or two from this fitness superstar. Here are a few of LaLanne's tips.

  • Your waistline is your lifeline.

  • Exercise is King, nutrition is Queen, put them together and you've got a kingdom.

  • Don't exceed the feed limit.

  • You eat everyday, you sleep everyday, and your body was made to exercise everyday.

  • Work at living and you don't have to die tomorrow.

What's so great about a juicer?

Reviews & Products

Every now and then, when I can't sleep, I come across Jack Lalanne and his over-enthusiastic infomercial touting his 'fabulous' juicer, which he in part credits to his longevity. Due to my practical nature, I never buy anything I see on an infomercial (except for the first season of Bewitched!)

But sometimes I think: there are worse things I could spend $100 than a juicer. I'm a big smoothie drinker and sometimes the blender doesn't cut it. Plus, it's a great way to get a big, healthy serving of veggies when I don't particularly feel like scarfing down a big salad. Should I cave and buy a juicer? What do you think?

Jack LaLanne's secrets to longevity

Celebs & Entertainment

Surely you've seen the infomercials with healthy living spokesperson Jack Lalanne, where he talks about good health and tries to get to buy his juicer. I tell ya, at 91, that guy's got a lot of energy and if the juicer is his secret, sign me up.

Okay, so the juicer isn't the only reason he's a healthy as he is. He also works out every day -- for 2 hours! A brush with a sugar-induced illness that incapacitated him in his teens lead him to the path of healthy eating. These days, he's a vegetarian who gets lots of fruits and veggies and healthy proteins. And of course, lots of exercise. And he can't help but wonder why most people in America treat their cars better than their bodies.

During his long career in the fitness industry, he's opened health clubs, lead us on the path of fitness via the TV and convinced us to get our veggies through the aforementioned infomercial. And he's still going, which at 91 is pretty amazing.
