Tart cherries are a smart snack

University of Michigan researchers have found that tiny little tart cherries can have a big impact on heart health and on diabetes. During the study researchers fed some rats a diet that included tart cherries; a control group of rats ate a diet that was equivalent in carbohydrates and calories but contained no cherries. At the end of the study, the rats who ate cherries had improvements in weight, fat percentage, cholesterol, and inflammation. A reduction in these risk factors is good news for heart health and diabetes.

Cherries are a nutritious addition to your diet. They're delicious, easy to snack on, and make a great addition to a lot of recipes. In fact, we've written about the perks of cherries before -- Chris wrote about the anti-inflammatory properties of cherries and they even offer some protection against UV rays. So grab a handful of tart cherries and snack away!

'Healthy' fast food is bad for your heart too

Do you think that by having a salad at McDonald's that you're doing something good for your heart? Think again. A study shows that whether you order a healthy meal of a veggie burger, orange juice and a side salad, or whether you go all out on a regular burger, soda and fries, your body's markers for cardiovascular disease are adversely affected. These findings surprised the researchers who discovered them, as they had originally set out to prove that heart-healthy fast food meals were available.

The moral of the story isn't that you might as well eat what you want because everything is bad for you anyway; rather, stay away from fast-food joints altogether if you can. I do and it's not that difficult but it takes a bit of planning. What do you think?

You Are What You Eat: Watch out, vampires, garlic is good for everyone else!

garlicEach week, we'll be offering original recipes and unique ways to use those Super Foods that pack nutritional power. After all, you are what you eat -- make it count!

Garlic: super taste, super breath. But also a Super Food.

Bad breath or not, it is worth it to me to include garlic in my diet for health reasons. Allicin, the sulfur compound that gives garlic its strong flavor, is good for your heart and immune system. Oh, and because it tastes so darned good, I couldn't cook with out it.

One of the easiest, sure fire ways for a garlic lover to get a lot of garlic is to roast a full bulb. Douse it with a bit of olive oil, stick it in the toaster oven and watch it. When it gets brown and you can mush the garlic out of the individual cloves and it is soft enough to spread, it's done. Spread it on your favorite whole grain bread or crackers, add some fresh herbs or sliced tomato and you've got a heck of a snack. Here are detailed instructions with lovely photos.

And think of all the fun you can have, seasoning your meals with healthy garlic. Aside from the multitudes of Italian recipes you'll find loaded with garlic (just do a Google search), how about using it in some unexpected places?

  • Add some roasted garlic to mashed potatoes or cauliflower.
  • Garlic soup (use plain yogurt instead of the cream) is a different treat that also highlights another yummy member of the onion family, leeks. Or, here's another Garlic Soup recipe that uses goat cheese instead of cream.
  • Creamy Zucchini and Garlic (use plain yogurt instead of sour cream) uses fresh and powdered garlic, zucchini and fresh thyme. A winner!
  • Garlic Vinaigrette goes well on many different kinds of salads.
  • Add a bunch of garlic cloves -- whole! -- to roasted vegetables and serve over pasta with a balsamic vinaigrette.

I loved this collection of off-the-beaten-path semi-gourmet recipes using loads of garlic. From Braised Rabbit to Calimari to the ol' Chicken with Forty Cloves of Garlic, you'll find something special here.

And the trick to getting rid of garlic breath? You could try chewing a coffee bean or two, or a little parsley. I haven't found anything that works yet, except to make sure everyone around you eats lots of garlic too.

Do you have a favorite garlic recipe?

South Beach Diet creator has a new heart-healthy program

Chances are you've heard of the hugely popular South Beach Diet. The creator, Dr. Arthur Agatston has recently released another book, but the goal this time isn't losing weight -- it's keeping the heart healthy. The South Beach Heart Program emphasizes healthy living over invasive surgery that offers a quick fix to heart troubles. The diet includes a selection of healthy fats, like olive oil, plus healthy, whole grain carbohydrates, fruits and veggies, lean protein and low fat dairy. In addition to the diet, activity, including core-strengthening exercises are emphasized, as well as diagnostic testing -- all aimed at preventing heart problems and maintaining a healthy body.

You only have one heart and it's your most important organ, so you better take care of it!

Being in my mid-20s, I don't worry much about heart disease. I'm young, I'm healthy and I'm active so it's never been a concern of mine, but maybe it should be. Heart health is important at any stage of your life, especially because what you do now could negatively impact your life in the future. Smoking, eating high-fat diets, not watching your serving sizes -- these can all prove fatal to you in the years to come, even if it doesn't seem that way to your 20-year-old body.

So, no matter what your age, I urge you to take this quiz. It consists of 10 simple questions that can not only test your knowledge but give you important info the the future of your heart. I got 7 out of 10. What about you?
