Fit Links: St. Patrick's Day the healthy way

In my town, there are two things to do on St. Patrick's Day -- run a 5K or drink green beer. Many residents do both, a few do both at the same time. Last year, former That's Fit blogger Jessica gave us some tips for making our St. Pat's celebrations a little lighter and a little healthier.

An old Irish recipe for longevity says:

Leave the table hungry.
Leave the bed sleepy.
Leave the table thirsty.

You may not be able to leave the table hungry with these delicious recipes in front of you, but at least you'll know they are not only delicious, but light and nutritious as well. Check out this St. Patrick's Day Irish Stew, these St. Patrick's day recipe makeovers, or these traditional recipes that are also vegan.

Fit Gifts: Think outside the gift box and give a prepaid medical gift card

Healthy Aging, Vitamins and Supplements, Healthy Kids, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

We will be spending more than $26 billion on gift cards this year. And just when you thought there's nothing new under the Christmas tree along comes one for 'good health.'

When it comes to Christmas presents, I was stumped over what to give to my husband's grandmother. As you know, most of the older generation really has everything they need. But, as luck would have it, I've found something that fits perfectly -- the 'gift of health' through a medical gift card.

It's not far off of what I did for my own grandmother year's ago. I bought her food. Yes, of course, she could buy her own food, but I headed to the grocery store to save her a trip. I then returned home and put everything in baskets under the tree (everything that didn't need to be in the fridge anyway.) Honestly, as simple (or as strange) as that may seem, she was so happy to not only receive something that she could use, but it saved her a from having to shop and lug everything into the house and it also saved her money - something everyone can relate to.

Fit Gifts: Give the gift of adventure

Fitness, Reviews & Products

I just came across a gift idea that I think is fabulous. Gifty Box has a Choose Your Own Adventure box. It contains an gift certificate for the outdoor adventure of your choice in your area. You can choose your certificate based on region -- Midwest, Southwest, etc. -- and even in my own little burg I found several adventures within a few hour's drive: kite boarding, hiking, kayaking, parachuting (yikes!), yoga, sailing, hang gliding, and so on. There are also Gifty Boxes for classes and lessons, as well as wine tasting.

I would love to find this under the Christmas tree this year...would you?

Holidays: Stressful and unhealthy? 10 ways to fight back

Diet & Weight Loss, Motivation

The holidays are supposed to be fun and relaxing, but unfortunately for a lot of people they're also full of stress and frustration. I still get excited about shopping and cooking, and don't necessarily think of myself as being stressed -- but I am busier and have so much more on my mind during these months that there definitely is an element of rushing and strain.

The causes for holiday stress can vary from simple frustrations like mall parking and weight-gain worries to more deep-seated issues like family dynamics. Some thoughts from a collection of doctors, nutritionists, and other experts on having a healthier and less stressful holiday season include budgeting calories early to allow room for splurges, spreading the holiday out instead of focusing only on the "big days," or even taking a real pre-season vacation to rejuvenate yourself for all the upcoming events and family time.
