Jumpstart Your Fitness: With the 5 best summer fruits
One of the best parts about summer is all the fresh fruit that comes into season -- not only does it taste so much better when it didn't have to get shipped across the world but freshly ripened fruit is also full of much more in the way of nutrients, enzymes, and other health benefits. And although pretty much all fruits are good for you in one way or another, here are a few you'll want to make sure you incorporate as much as possible into your summer diet:Apricots: a perfect summer food
If you are a grape or apple fan, you may know that those fruits (and their skins) are some of the healthiest things you can eat these days. Fruits like tangerines and apricots are a little more exotic, but have immense health benefits as well. Not only do many fruits -- including apricots -- combat cancer, they are good for helping prevent heart disease as well as helping to prevent cataracts.
In other words, if you're not eating a daily dose of fresh fruit, what are you waiting for? The benefits are simply tremendous. The taste is not bad either! Start a healthy habit this summer and get hooked on apricots.
Frozen or canned -- which is better?
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, which selection is better? In most cases, frozen fruits and vegetables are the more healthy choice, but why is that?Frozen fruits and vegetables are generally the same as fresh selections of the same foods, except that they are frozen. In general, there are no (or little) preservatives used at all -- because the foods are frozen soon after being harvested.
With canned foods, additives like sodium and preservatives are commonly used since there is no preservation method in canning really. In addition, the taste of "fresh" fruits and vegetables sure beats the taste of "dead" foods like those that are generally canned.
My take on "healthy" canned vegetables
As Rigel pointed to earlier, a new study was recently released by the canned-food industry that concluded canned fruits and vegetables were just as healthy as the fresh version. While eating canned fruits and vegetables is a great alternative to not eating fruits and veggies at all, I have to take serious issue with this claim here.In what may be a pretty clear conflict of interest, the canned food industry says that products under its watch are just as healthy as the fresh versions. I'm not believer in that at all and continue to think that fresh fruit and vegetables, and even frozen fruits and vegetables, are much more healthy than the canned kind. Why? The processing canned gods go through compared to fresh and frozen veggies and fruits -- there's the answer.
There are merits that canned foods are not exposed to the environment like fresh veggies and fruits may be -- which is why eating fresh fruits and veggies the day you buy them (or the next day) is very important. Frozen fruits and veggies? Just as good in my opinion. I'm not fan of the sodium-filled (in many cases) canned vegetables -- they just taste "dead" to me after eating the fresh kind.
