Push yourself for 5 to feel alive

Fitness

FitSugar has a simple and effective tip to share: Really push yourself for five minutes of your workout.

My favorite exercise is a cardio DVD that I follow in my living room. Without realizing I was doing it, I often follow FitSugar's tip. I use the weights for a while longer than the instructor, I pump up the intensity, or add some of my own moves to make the workout just a bit more challenging.

Whatever your workout of choice is, try adding five minutes of high intensity activity. Push yourself and let your body get a little winded. Unless you have asthma or another condition that contraindicates you for this type of high-intensity exercise, the change in pace will be good for your workout.

Boxing Champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants you to carve flat abs

Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Celebrities and Entertainment, Cellulite, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

"Pretty Boy Floyd" is not known for mincing words or sugar-coating anything. In fact this elite fighter who has won six world championship belts in five weight classes and has gone undefeated as a professional says it straight. He describes himself as the "greatest athlete ever," and honestly ... has done a lot to back that up.

He's featured in the book, Men's Health Celebrity Diet Secrets 2008, and I think one of his quotes is both poignant and hysterical. I encourage you not to read any further if you're easily offended though. He wasn't vulgar, but his thoughts on maintaining flat abs isn't for children either.

Before I go there, I just want you to know that Floyd not only walks the walk, but he has made it possible for his team (those who bust their butt to keep in at the top of his game) to get and stay fit as well. He's purchased memberships to 24-Hour Fitness for all of his employees. "I want to keep everyone around me healthy and in shape," he says.

Weight Loss Quick Tip: Change 5 meals a week

Healthy Habits, Vegetarian, Vitamins and Supplements, Womens Health, Healthy Recipes, Healthy Kids, Cellulite, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

An easy way to lose weight is to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Produce is famous for jamming massive amounts of vitamins, nutrients and fiber into very few calories. With most produce, you can consume lots of food for a very low caloric price. More bang for your buck that is!

I ask my personal training clients to try to include at least five meals per week consisting of pure produce. No meat. No grains. Most folks eat at least 21 meals per week, so this five meal plan doesn't deter anyone from getting enough protein. What it does do though, is get them to try new fruits and learn new ways to turn veggies into a meal.

Another benefit to this effort is that by keeping a few meals to just produce, you will more than likely be cutting quite a bit of calories out of the day. Over time, the more you rely on fruits and vegetables for snacks and meals, the more likely you'll be to achieve and maintain your ideal weight.

Area races will save lives

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

On Sunday, a marathon will take place in my city. There will also be a half marathon, a kids marathon, and a 5K. I've got a handful of friends of who will challenge themselves in the name of fun and fitness by running in these races and while I won't be one of the competitors this year, I may entertain the idea next time around. Part of me is intrigued by the physical accomplishment I could make by conquering more than 26 miles. Part of me just wants to participate in an event that has the power to save lives in five different ways.

The Five Points of Life races, sponsored by LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, are designed to raise awareness about the need for five life-saving donations -- blood, apheresis, bone marrow, organs and tissue, and cord blood. Some event participants and volunteers are donors, some are recipients, and some are both. Donors are asked to wear an orange ribbon on race day. Recipients: a blue one (we're Gators here, hence the orange and blue). The ribbons will serve as reminders of the importance of saving lives.

Should I run next year, I'll be wearing a blue ribbon, in honor of the several units of blood I received while hospitalized three years ago with chemotherapy-induced low blood counts. What a thrill it would be to publicly acknowledge the gift I was given. What a thrill it would be to run all those miles.

Strive for a healthy 5

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

All you need to remember for this diet plan is the number 5, says Harley Pasternak, trainer to the stars and author of The 5 Factor Diet.

Eat five meals per day, advises the most sought-after trainer among celebrities. Besides three main meals, have two substantial snacks so you never get hungry. Also, try to include these five components in every meal.

  • A lean protein, such as chicken, fish, or egg whites.
  • Filling carbs, like sweet potatoes, beans, brown rice, or oatmeal.
  • Healthy fats. Try olive oil or nuts.
  • Five grams of fiber, best obtained through fruit, vegetables, or whole grains.
  • A sugar-free beverage. Water, tea, coffee, an unsweetened energy drink, or diet soda all count.
And finally, exercise five days per week. Strive for 25 minutes on a treadmill, take a Pilates class, or power walk with a friend.

Q. Dear Fitz. I am nine weeks pregnant and I have been on a very disciplined work out routine ever since I had my little girl in 2004. I had weighed 210 pounds when I gave birth, so in essence I'd gained 70 pounds! I was 140 when I got pregnant. I am bound and determined not to get fat this time, but most importantly I want to be healthy and happy when I give birth in March of 2008. I do at least 40 minutes of cardio most days. Twenty minutes of walking, and stairs for another twenty. I stretch and do yoga moves like the snake and the bridge, which is pretty much a back bend. I feel so much better when I do this, but I'm afraid of harming the baby. Any advice?

A. First of all, I'm thrilled you're making fitness a priority this time around. Creating and carrying a human is hard work and it certainly is best for the both of you if you maintain a healthy home....you being " the home"! Your cardiovascular routine sounds great, and my only advice as you continue is to listen to your body. That baby comes first. Your booty comes second. If you ever experience pain, dizziness or excessive fatigue while exercising, stop immediately. If it bothers you, don't do it. Also monitor your heart rate. If you're huffing and puffing too much, your core temperature will rise...which is not good for your child. Train at a consistent moderate to low pace.

As far as the back bends go.....I'd follow the same rules. What feels fine at nine weeks, is probably not going to feel fine at 17 weeks. I'm usually uber fit fitness trainer/athlete chic, but as both of my pregnancies progressed I simply had to cut certain exercises out. I imagine the back bend is eventually going to wean itself out of your routine. As always, check with your doctor before pursuing anything, Everyone's pregnancies are different and only your OB knows your personal needs and limits. You didn't mention it, but I'm sure you're eating nutritiously as well. Food is for fuel. Nourish your overworked body, and nourish that baby. Pay attention to what you put in your mouth, and come this March you'll be thrilled with both your spectacular infant and your fit body too. Best Wishes! Fitz

FItz. I am an active girl who eats very healthy, but can't seem to lose the last five pounds. Any suggestions? Mary

5 of the best cardio workouts

Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

It's no secret that aerobic exercise is good for you. It lowers the possibility of heart disease, lowers blood pressure and elevates your mood, among other benefits. For those just starting out though, it may be tough to know what kind of exercise will be of the most benefit. If you're unsure of what type of cardio to try, here's a list of 5 great workouts:

  • Walking/Running - Walking is fantastic because nearly everyone can do it and it can be done pretty much anywhere. Plus it's cheap and it's easy on your body. As the article mentions, running burns more calories but is tough on your joints so make sure to invest in a really good pair of shoes.
  • Swimming - Depending on the stroke, swimming engages a number of muscles at a time. Legs and arms work together and it's usually necessary to tighten up your core as well. This exercise is easy on joints so is better for those who have trouble with running or even walking. And based on my experience, swimming is great because you stay cool while burning calories.
  • Jumping Rope - Have you tried jumping rope lately? It's darn tough! I don't remember getting so out of breath when I was younger, but a jump rope will have your heart rate up fast. Plus they're cheap and easy to use. But again, this activity can be tough on joints.
  • Biking/Spinning - I admit that cycling on an indoor stationary bike is one of my least favorite activities. But it does burn calories, so if you can work hard (which is tough while reading a book, for those of you out there who I've seen diving into a novel while on the bike) and imagine away the monotony, it'll do you a lot of good. Biking outdoors, when the weather permits, is fantastic though and is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise.
  • Cross-country skiing - From what I remember of cross-country skiing, it doesn't look hard to glide across the snow, but this is one activity that will literally get your butt into shape. You'll work both legs and arms (they'll be shaky when you're done, trust me) and if you don't start to feel short of breath right away, you're probably sliding down a hill. Plus it's a great way to enjoy the great outdoors in the winter.

Q. Dear Fitz, I need to lose only five pounds and want to rev up my walking program in the hope that I can lose these last few pounds. I wear wrist weights thinking this will boost my metabolism. Do you have any suggestions on how to make a walking program more intense? I have heard about walking poles but I'm not sure this is the answer and I think I would feel silly using them on the city streets -- thinking I would look "strange." So if you have any suggestions as to how to put more OOMPH in my walking to lose these few pounds, I would greatly appreciate hearing about it. Thanks. Judith

A. Hey Judith. Love your ambition, and I'm so glad you asked the question. First of all, I do not ever recommend using wrist weights while walking. Adding weight to your wrists will only adding strain to the elbow and shoulder joints as you swing your arms back and forth. Plus they really serve no great benefit to you anyway. Small weights wouldn't amp up your calorie burn significantly and if you want to build the muscles in your arms you'd be much better off just doing specific strength training exercises for your arms!

In order to challenge yourself while walking you can do several things. Walk faster. Walk at an incline. If you don't have hills in your city, find some stairs or use a treadmill on occasion. Adding weighted resistance can be a great idea, but the wrist or ankle weights are definite no-no's. Instead you can look in to a weighted vest. This type of resistance is well-balanced, and will not strain your joints. Weighted vests can make things more challenging as you can carry significant weight this way. You can use a vest with anywhere from 10-40 pounds, and increase the weight as you progress. The benefit of using an actual fitness vest instead of a backpack full of books is that the weight is distributed evenly across your chest, ribs and back.

As far as looking funny goes, forget about it Judith! I think for the most part, when we see others exercising we're more envious and impressed than anything else. If you're working toward better health, you'll always be cool and that's a fact. Click here to check out the weighted vests. Let me know when your five pounds disappear! Fitz

Q. Hey Fitz. I'm 14 and I weigh around 118 lbs. Sometimes I feel too thin. How can I gain muscle without losing weight and getting smaller? Stacy

Cool Tool: Ballast Ball -- The stability balls' way cooler new sister

Womens Health, Healthy Products and Reviews, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

The Ballast Ball is the new and improved version of the stability ball. In fact, you can do absolutely everything you can do on a stability ball with the Ballast Ball....except for consistently fall on your head.

Created by BOSU, I tested out the new product last week at a fitness conference. Ar first glance, I thought "no way am I dropping another sixty bucks on a ball with some sort beads in it, I already have too many!" But then I tried it. I squatted down on the ball, and when I stood up it didn't roll away. Then I put both feet on the ball and my hands on the floor to do push-ups.....and I didn't roll away! Then I lifted it up for a while and my arms got tired, my core remained engaged and my glutes never unflexed themselves. Hmmmmmm I though. Maybe it is worth the sixty bucks.

The Ballast Ball is genuinely cool, and I simply wish I'd thought of it myself. You can do all of your regular stability ball exercises better, because the ball is more stable. It weighs five pounds, which offers a whole slew of other productive things you can do with it as well. I did end up buying one. My beginner clients love it, because they can do what I ask them to do without constantly falling and readjusting. My high level fitness clients love it cause they can do the really advanced exercises without losing the ball.

Is Hershey's chocolate promoting fitness? You bet!

Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

I just noticed the coolest thing on the inside of a Reese's peanut butter cup package my daughter and I shared. It actually has a message on the inside of the wrapper that says "Candy is a treat. Please consume in moderation." Amen to that, and thank you Hershey's! I'm so excited that they're making this effort.

Do they have to do it? No! Is it a thoughtful message sent from a company that could make a fortune off of people over-indulging? Yes! So.....I say thank you to Hershey. Not only do I adore and enjoy your milk chocolate as a 'sometimes' treat, but I value your interest in the health of your consumers. This fitness expert is sending you a moral high five. Way to go!
