Dance and Be Fit: Lower Body Burn

Photo: amazon.com

Nobody can argue that dancers tend to have enviably long, toned legs. So, it makes sense that a dance-based fitness video would be designed to give you "strong, lean dancer legs," which is just what "Dance and Be Fit: Lower Body Burn with Kimberly Miguel Mullen" promises.

The video is 50 minutes long and divided into four segments -- a warm-up, cool down, and two 20-minute sculpting workouts.

Valerie Bertinelli: Losing it and Keeping Fit

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Valerie Bertinelli is a total inspiration. She worked hard, lost weight, and looks amazing. And now, she has a fitness DVD -- "Valerie Bertinelli: Losing it and Keeping Fit."

The DVD is divided into three sections: a 20-minute Level 1 workout, a 40-minute Level 2 workout, and then Bonus Features. Both workouts feature Bertinelli with celebrity personal trainer Christopher Ross Lane, who was instrumental in helping the actress sculpt her new body.

Obviously, the workouts worked for Bertinelli. But is this DVD right for you? I tested out both workouts to find out.

Yoga for Weight Loss: DVD Review

Fitness, Fit at Home

Yoga facilitates weight loss in multiple ways. Sure, you get the physical benefits -- increased strength and flexibility -- but there's more to it, and that's a large part of what Element: Yoga for Weight Loss seeks to benefit.

Instructor Ashley Turner is not only a well-known and respected yoga instructor, but she also has a Master's in Counseling Psychology. She combines physical instruction and mental application to give students the greatest benefit from their yoga practice.

Like the other Element videos, Yoga for Weight Loss is filmed in a beautiful outdoor setting, and instructions are given in a voice over. But of all the yoga DVDs out there, is this the right one for you?

10 Minute Solution Hip Hop Dance Mix: DVD Review

You know the cardio dance class at your gym that you love going to, but never feel like you can really get into it because there are people watching? You know what I mean -- you don't shake your booty as much as you could, or you feel foolish when you don't get the steps down after the first try.

10 Minute Solution: Hip Hop Dance Mix is a way to get that sort of workout in the comfort (and privacy) of your own home. The moves are fun, and not cheesy, and in the 50-minute workout, you learn loads of different moves and routines.

Kristin Jacobs, the video's instructor, is fit and fun to follow -- you can tell she's having a good time, but even she gets a little out of breath at times. And hey, if the instructor is getting a workout, you'd better believe that the five segments (Hip Hop Basics, Fat Burning Funk, Edgy Grooves, Body Re-Mix and Cardio Street Heat) will work you out, too!

Fit By Tracey Walking Strong: DVD Review

Fit at Home

Photo: amazon.com

I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that you know how to walk. Chances are, you even know how to walk on a treadmill. So why on earth would you need a fitness DVD devoted to walking?

Well, as the temperatures dip toward freezing, plenty of folks take their outdoor workouts indoors, and that includes those long, nightly walks that helped you stay so slim. But let's face it -- spending an hour walking on your home treadmill (or the one at the gym) isn't exactly the most exciting way to spend your time.

Fit By Tracey Walking Strong is designed to break up the monotony, bump up your heart rate and help you achieve a full-body workout, all on the treadmill. But, if you don't have a treadmill at home (like me), there's someone showing you how to do the workout on the floor, too.

Pulse Yoga I: DVD Review

Since we're giving it away this week as part of our Triple Fit Giveaway, I thought it would be a good idea to check out Pulse Yoga I with Argie Tang. This is the basic Pulse Yoga video, offering an overview of the concept (and a pretty decent workout along the way).

The 60-minute video incorporates Pilates, weight training and yoga to build strength, stamina and power. Other DVDs in the series are Pulse Yoga II Balance & Tone, Pulse Yoga III Stamina & Strength and the 30-minute Pulse Yoga Express. The subsequent DVDs are all on the same skill level. This way, "You can choose to mix and match your routines, depending on which workouts you like best," Tang says.

Tang has a wealth of experience in yoga, having studied under some of the great masters. In 1978, she opened the first Yoga College of India for Bikram Choudury and has taught more than 15,000 yoga classes. She's joined in the video by Prisca Boris, who shows modifications for some of the more challenging poses and worked with Tang to launch the "Y4A" Fitness System.

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs - Jennie Garth gets confused

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements

Earlier this year, Jennie Garth had forgotten about her body. To see her now, though, you wouldn't have any idea -- she's holding her own on the new 90210 against all those hot young stars! So how'd she get her body in such great shape? By mixing it up!

She's been working out with her husband, Peter Facinelli, using her trainer, Tony Horton's P90X DVDs, and she says, "Every day is different. One day is really hard yoga. Then arms and shoulders, legs, then karate. His program is made to confuse the muscles so you don't plateau. I feel better now than I ever have."

Not only does it sound like this routine keeps her muscles working, but it probably keeps the workouts fresh and fun, too! The training system she's referring to is available here for $119.95 -- sounds like quite a bit for a video, for me, but it's really a whole program including workouts and nutrition information.

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs - Gwyneth Paltrow wants you to work out with her

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Gwyneth Paltrow has always kept a slim, trim figure, and soon you might have a chance to train with the cool blonde -- without gym equipment!

A source recently told The Sun, a British newspaper, that Gwyneth might be releasing a workout DVD, on which she'll "show what she does each day to stay slim -- mostly Pilates, yoga, and resistance training."

The only catch? Gwynnie is rumored to work out for two hours a day, and while I know I'd love to go through a workout with her, I also know I can't commit that kind of time each day to an exercise video. Whether Gwyneth actually puts out a video or not, there are plenty of celebs who have videos out there -- you might be surprised at some of the names out there!

Kevin Federline plans to make a fitness DVD

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Kevin Federline is planning to release a fitness DVD. Hang on there, everyone -- don't start running out to buy one just yet. He plans to film it after he loses a bunch of weight. I guess that's one type of motivation.

The former backup dancer has admitted that his weight ballooned due to "the pressure of looking after [his] children." He said, "I plan to get back to looking ripped and sexy again -- I know I have let it all go, but watch me fly this year."

Apparently, I missed the "sexy" part the first time around. At any rate, K-Fed hopes to release the video in January 2009. I'll be most curious to hear what music he uses for the routine -- his own, his ex-wife Britney's, or something else entirely. What about you -- does anybody have any interest in getting fit with Federline?

Mel B to release fitness video

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Pop star Melanie Brown (aka Mel B) may have a fitness DVD in the works. After the Spice Girl appeared on Dancing with the Stars, her body is more toned than ever. She states that she works out three times a week and incorporates a lot of weights into her fitness routine.

"I've devised my own workout that hopefully I'll be sharing with people soon," says Mel B.

After her stint as Scary Spice, Mel B released two solo albums. Her second-place finish on Dancing with the Stars wasn't her last TV run, either. She's reported on Access Hollywood and is scheduled to host a singing competition with Joey Fatone this summer.

Fitness DVDs: What's hot

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products

Without a gym membership or an in-home treadmill, I depend on my DVD player all winter to help me keep in shape. If you're looking for a low-cost, low-tech way to workout, fitness DVDs are the way to go to maintain or spice up your workout routine. A yoga or Pilates DVD can add flexibility training to your cardio workout. A strength training DVD can help you build muscle. DVDs can be a rainy day option (or like me, a seasonal option), or you can use them to learn something new.

Choosing a DVD can be tricky sometimes, and I've been burned more than once. Reading reviews before you buy is definitely recommended. The people from Fitness magazine and Collage Video recently chose their current favorites, so if you're in the market for a new fitness DVD, you might want to take a look!

Avoiding a wintertime exercise funk

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

The days are getting colder and shorter, and outdoor exercise isn't just as simple as throwing on your running shoes for a brisk run anymore. If you love outdoor workouts, or if it's just mentally hard to get yourself going when it's dark outside, then you might find yourself slipping into an wintertime exercise funk. It's true that motivation can wane in the dark winter months, but exercise is important year-round.

Ediets has some excellent suggestions for keeping yourself physically fit through the winter. In many cases, it may mean adapting or reducing your routine, but as long as you keep moving, you'll stay fit. My favorites include:
  • Find a workout buddy who shares goals similar to your own.
  • Treat yourself to a few sessions with a personal trainer.
  • Plan a vacation to someplace warm so you can enjoy your favorite physical activities.
  • Buy a piece of home equipment, or invest in a handful of fitness DVDs.

Fitness DVDs reviewed

Diet & Weight Loss

Chances are, the DVD section of your local store devotes an aisle or two to the latest fitness DVDs, which all promise to deliver a svelte body within a seemingly impossible time frame. The amount of choices can be overwhelming, and you can't judge a fitness video by its cover, so how do you pick the one that will pack the biggest punch to your paunch? You could start by checking this out -- it's a review of some of the most popular DVDs. Unfortunately, only 5 DVDs are reviewed, and there are definitely more than 5 out there. But hey, it's a start.

I don't own many fitness DVDs, but I do have The Windsor Pilates set, and though I grew a bit tired of the 20-minute workout after doing it for what seems the 100th time, I really liked each of the workout DVDs. I would probably give it an A.

What DVDs have you tried?
