How to survive a run-in with a fast food restaurant

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

You've started exercising, you've cut out bad fats and excessive sugar, you're watching what you eat and taking care of your body, and then you suddenly find yourself standing at a fast food counter. What do you do?

For most people, the occasional fast food meal is inevitable. But just because you're there doesn't mean you have to dissolve into a super-size frenzy. It is possible to eat fast and still eat relatively healthy, you just have to make a plan, stick to it, and order right. Prevent the fallout at your next fast food meal with these easy tips from eDiets, and remember the general rules: less is always better, grilled is better than fried, and sauces aren't worth the calories.

Do Subway diners eat more calories?

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

If you're trying to eat right, then eating out can be a challenge. Just choosing a restaurant with a healthy image isn't enough to ensure that you're getting a healthy meal, however. That much was proven by researchers who found that diners eating at Subway routinely underestimated the number of calories in their meal. Not only that, diners who ordered subs also were more likely to add on a high-calorie side item, apparently because they thought their meal was light enough to warrant it. But when you put a 12-inch BMT and a Big Mac side-by-side, the BMT actually has an additional 300 calories!

The study authors insist they aren't trying to slam Subway, but are just trying to draw attention to the role marketing plays in people's eating habits. Subway -- and other similar restaurants -- can offer you a healthy lunch, you just have to be a savvy consumer.

Quiz: can you choose the lesser of two nutritional evils?

Diet & Weight Loss

While I wouldn't recommend making a visit to one of these places a daily ritual, sometimes you just can't avoid grabbing a snack or lunch at places with less than perfect nutritional profiles. Fast food, coffee shops, and restaurants may not be able to offer you the best choices when it comes to a healthy meal, but you can train yourself to sniff out the lesser of two evils.

Try this quiz from Women's Health Magazine and see how you score when having to quickly to choose between two similar food choices. Some of the answers may surprise you. For instance, did you know that a strawberry Coolatta from Dunkin Donuts has an amazing 19 less grams of fat than a Raspberry Frozen Blend from Krispy Kreme, as well as 300 less calories? Or that a Quarter Pounder has nearly half that fat of a Whopper, though both are 4 ounce burgers? Of course, they didn't pit either burger up against a nice side salad, but that wouldn't have been any fun now, would it?

Again, I'm not recommending you eat these foods, but it was an interesting way for me to learn more about the fast food choices I encounter when I'm on the run. If you're truly interested in sticking to your diet while you're on the go, here are 15 tips to help you stay on course.
