Get fightin' lean

There's a workout, and then there's a Work Out. And THEN, there's a BOXING WORK OUT. Trust me, there's a reason why boxers are able to spend over a half an hour in a ring exchanging punches and not go into cardiac arrest. It's because these guys and gals have trained their butts off for months before ever stepping foot in that arena, let alone that ring. But, you don't have to be Rocky Balboa to get the benefit of a boxing workout, which is why I am this week highlighting some of the basic boxing moves that you too can add to your fitness routine.

First of all, be sure to always maintain a proper stance. This means keeping your feet a little more than shoulder- width apart, with your dominant foot in the back (in other words, if you're right handed/footed, than you want your right foot in the back and for your left foot to lead). Try your best to stay on the balls on your feet, which will allow you to do all your fancy stutter-stepping footwork (or for now, just keep you balanced). Your hands should be made into fists and kept close to your face. Your elbows need to be tucked closely to your body. From here, you're ready to start dotting some imaginary bad guy's eyes.

Join Everlast this Christmas in the fight against breast cancer

Posted: Nov 30th 2007 3:35PM by Chris Sparling

Looking for the perfect gift for the health nut in your family this holiday? And, would you like to help raise money for breast cancer awareness? Then I've got the just the gift idea for you.

Boxing mega company Everlast is still running their popular pink boxing glove promotion, where they donate 5% of each sale of these specialty gloves to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). These mitts are actual boxing gloves, not some kitchy, fun version. They look, smell, and definitely feel like the real thing -- save for the bright pink color, that is.

Most women probably won't have any issue wearing pink boxing gloves, while some men may put up a bit of a fight. If that happens, be sure to point out that heavyweight fighter Monte Barret went toe-to-toe with a 7-foot Russian opponent last year while donning these very same pink gloves, which he wore in honor of his deceased mother, who succumbed to breast cancer just prior.

Best Workout of the Week Award - Buddy Lee's Jump Rope Training System

As a kickboxer and full time fitness trainer of almost 20 years I've become a huge fan of the jump rope. The benefits of jumping rope are infinite: it offers an unbelievable cardiovascular workout which offer the propensity to burn a ton of calories, can increase speed and explosiveness, it's inexpensive, light weight, travels easily. The perfect piece of equipment! I remember long ago when I began fighting, my trainer gave me a rope and told me to 'jump'. Well, I was terrible at it and struggled for a long time to become good at it. Why? I had very little guidance on the skill of jumping rope. My trainer wasn't trying to be mean, he just didn't know the techniques of teaching this skill either.

I think since we all jumped rope as a child, it's assumed we should all just be able to do it now. If you've tried it as an adult, you may have experienced the constant rope kicking, stopping, reshuffling, whipping of the legs, and frustration. How defeating! For years, I have been having my clients jump rope with only the guidance I could give from my experience. Some have had great success, some have had major struggles. Frustrating for me too.

So Friday at the fitness conference I attended, I ran into a man named Buddy Lee. He's a former Olympic wrestler and master of all there is about jumping rope. I instantly approached him because I'm in LOVE with the jump rope. I hoped he'd be able to provide the direction I needed to improve my personal skills and help me break it down for my beginners. Buddy did not disappoint.

Is your booty singing my favorite song?

Clumsy girls like me rejoice! Finally a solution to keep my mp3 player from constantly crashing to the floor. I've put the darn thing in my shorts pocket, on the little ledge of whatever machine I'm using, and I've even tucked it into my bra. Without fail, my teeny little music machine is guaranteed to make its way to the floor with the batteries and door scattered around the gym. Everlast has the coolest new solution.

iPod pants. Yep. Your tushy will sing as you put your eensy boom box in a little zipper pocket with a hole in it, which allows for your headphone cord to sneak out. The material apparently whisks moisture away to keep your sweaty hiney from causing a short in your shorts! Talk about fancy pants! Everlast put the iPod pocket on both dance pants and shorts. The pants retail for $36 and the shorts go for $30. I spotted them at EverlastWomens.Com.
