Researchers from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene set out to find out just how we like our coffee and followed the habits of afternoon coffee drinkers at Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts for 11 weeks. They found that while 78 percent of patrons at Dunkin' Donuts stuck to regular coffee with milk or sugar (averaging around 69 calories a cup), two-thirds of Starbucks addicts opted for fancier coffees, which upped the calorie count drastically.
Fast food - under 400-calorie options
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Under-400-calorie fast food choices bring to mind small salads and mini-wraps. But there are more choices out there than you think without lettuce as the star or 'mini' on the marquee.AOL Health has identified 17 under-400-calorie fast food choices. I was pleased to find a handful lower in fat, but beware of the sodium. The majority of selections were packed with over 1,000 mgs.
Here are my top three choices from the list:
- Dunkin' Donuts' Egg White Veggie Flatbread Sandwich: 290 calories, 9 g fat, 680 mg sodium -- which Dunkin' Donut do you think has the least fat and calories?
- Panera Bread's Half Tomato and Mozzarella on Ciabatta Bread: 390 calories, 15 g fat (high), 650 mg sodium
- Chik-Fil-A's Chargrilled Chicken and Fruit Salad with Reduced-Fat Berry Balsamic Vinagrette: 290 calories, 8 g fat, 1010 mg sodium (watch your sodium intake the rest of the day).
Dunkin' Donuts decision
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
You skipped breakfast this morning and a dozen assorted Dunkin' Donuts await you at the office. A hunger-meter registering near-starvation is no time to make a nutritionally sound donut decision.
On a good willpower day you walk away and seek a healthier alternative. But on a bad day you grab a donut, bite into the soft, melting circle of sugar and gulp it down in three bites. Then you try and forget it happened or your sugar rush will be ruined. Here are a few common selections I often see in a Dunkin' Donuts dozen. If it is a bad day, at least be aware of the nutritionally 'better' choice for your weak moment. Which selection do you think has the least fat and calories?
If you answered French Cruller, you're right! At 150 calories and 8 g of fat, this sexy little number has 80 less calories than the next best selection in the poll, a Glazed Donut with 230 calories and 10 g fat. I always figured the Old-Fashioned Cake Donut was the best bet, but don't let this Plain Jane fool you. It has 280 calories and 15 g fat, more than every choice in the poll!

Holy Sugar Shock! Mars partners with Dunkin Donuts
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Yes, Mars has partnered with Dunkin' Donuts to create the M&M's Donut (candy on top of a frosted donut) and the Milky Way Hot Chocolate. And, true to its name, the rich drink tastes a lot like someone melted a couple of Milky Ways in a cup -- with plenty of vanilla nougat, caramel and milk chocolate notes swimming around in there.Way, way, way too sweet for me, but my friend (who ordered the drink) loved it. So if you like the candy bar and hot chocolate, this may be the drink of your dreams. My thought though, is that it's actually a nightmare: If you order one of these crazy drinks (size medium) you will be consuming 280 calories, 9 grams of fat , 52 grams of carbs total and 41 grams of sugar!
I don't even want to comment on the candy coated frosted donut as I really can't comprehend why anyone would eat this ever.
That said, and clearly knowing that there is in fact, a market for this type of food. You might want to read 'The appalling truth about doughnuts' posted by Fitz before indulging in something that has Homer Simpson written all over it.
Dunkin' Donuts getting rid of all trans fats?
In the spirit of recent fast food chains that have dumped trans fats for frying various products on the menu, that early-morning haunt for many doughnut fans has thrown its hat into the ring. Dunkin' Donuts has announced its plans to largely do away with using trans fats to fry its various pastry products. The chain has announced that it developed an alternative cooking oil that is trans fat-free and will switch most of its products to using that oil soon (no specific timeframe was given).
The company made the bold statement that its menu would be laced with "zero grams trans fat" at its 5,400 U.S. locations. Is this another move to make customers healthier or cash in on the "trans fat" bandwagon for PR purposes. Both are fine in my opinion.
Quiz: can you choose the lesser of two nutritional evils?
Try this quiz from Women's Health Magazine and see how you score when having to quickly to choose between two similar food choices. Some of the answers may surprise you. For instance, did you know that a strawberry Coolatta from Dunkin Donuts has an amazing 19 less grams of fat than a Raspberry Frozen Blend from Krispy Kreme, as well as 300 less calories? Or that a Quarter Pounder has nearly half that fat of a Whopper, though both are 4 ounce burgers? Of course, they didn't pit either burger up against a nice side salad, but that wouldn't have been any fun now, would it?
Again, I'm not recommending you eat these foods, but it was an interesting way for me to learn more about the fast food choices I encounter when I'm on the run.
