Q. Hi Fitz. I would like to start teaching my family good eating habits. I'm overweight and my children are too. Where should I start? Thanks. Charlene
A. Hello Miss Charlene. Thanks for the great question. Raising fit and healthy children is my soap box, and actually one of my favorite lecture topics. Why? It's so important! Parents literally have the capability to set their children up with terrific habits which will greatly increase their chances of living a long healthy life. What a wonderful gift! The opposite is true as well. Moms and Dads who do not insist upon healthy foods and exercise can doom their children with awful diseases, ailments and even worse ... premature death. Junk food is no fun in the long run, and we as parents, owe it to our beautiful babies to provide a healthy start.
Are brain-boosting supplements legit?
Vitamins and Supplements, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
There are many nutritional supplements on the market that claim to be able to positively effect your mental acuity. Ginko biloba, vitamin E, vitamin B, and even aspirin are supposed brain-boosters, helping to give you somewhat of a mental lift when you need it.
Skeptical? Yeah, me too. Fortunately, a new book called YOU: Staying Young clears things up a bit with regard to this whole brain supplement debate. Here's just a few of the authors' (Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen) opinions:
Vitamin E: Yes. People who consume the RDA of this vitamin have been shown to have a 43-percent less chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease.
Vitamin B: Yes. The authors suggest 400micrograms of folic acid, 800 micrograms of B12, and 40milligrams of B12, stating that B vitamins help your neurotransmitters work more effectively.
Ginko Biloba: Not Really. Although the authors point to some promising research, there is nothing conclusive yet regarding ginko biloba's alleged brain-boosting benefits.
Aspirin: Yes. According to the authors, people who take 162mg of aspirin per day have been shown to have a 40-percent decrease in arterial aging, which contributes greatly to memory loss.
If any of you have ever experienced any benefits (or none at all) from some of these supplements, we'd all be interested to hear about it.
Can you pass Dr. Oz's push-up test?

Oprah loves the energetic Dr. Mehmet Oz. He's making a big name for himself on the Oprah Winfrey Show, along with his sidekick, Dr. Michael Roizen. Last month on Oprah, the docs introduced their 90-Day Live Longer, Feel Younger Plan. Adhere to these three lifestyle changes and you'll see and feel results fast.
1. Do yoga and lift weights: your heart, blood pressure, strength and flexibility will thank you.
2. Walk 30 minutes every day: rain or shine.
3. Diet: adopt the attitude "food is medicine" -- skip these eleven Hall of Shame foods
Now here's a test. Dr. Oz says a 30-year-old woman should be able to nail 45 bent-leg push-ups, while a man the same age should be capable of 35 standard push-ups. Take away five push-ups for every decade thereafter. Hold on, let me take the test. My face is red and hands are shaking, but I passed ... barely. Any takers?
