Bob Greene Special - I'm Fat Again

Diet & Weight Loss, Best Life with Bob Greene

There are a million excuses offered by those of us who lose weight only to gain it back. On a new Discovery Health Best Life special, "I'm Fat Again" airing tonight (May 28) at 8 p.m., Oprah's trainer, best-selling author and That's Fit columnist Bob Greene follows three people to help them overcome their losing battle with yo-yo dieting.

This episode is not just about going on a master cleanse once, only to gain it all back. Instead the show follows one couple that has undergone gastric bypass, then sees the scale creep back up, and another classic yo-yo dieter who has seen her weight spike and shrink over the years.

That's Fit recently spoke with Bob to learn about what to expect when we tune in.

That's Fit: What sort of yo-yo dieters are we talking about here?

Bob:
This one looks at a traditional person who goes on a diet, a chronic yo-yo dieter. But it also looks at two very common surgeries -- LAP-band and gastric bypass. The couple that had [surgery] lost some weight, but then started to put it back on. So this episode really focuses on why the statistics are so bad for people being able to keep the weight off. We also looked at 'are these procedures sound and who should have them?' In the end we found, they are appropriate for quite a few people, but you have to adopt the lifestyle change along with it.

I'm Fat Again: A Best Life Special premieres tonight at 8pm ET/PT on Discovery Health. For more information, please visit discoveryhealth.com.

Marathon Love

Fitness, Motivation

Boston Marathon signRunning a marathon is challenging under any circumstances. Running a marathon while pushing your spouse in a wheelchair is incredible. But doing so for many marathons and on daily runs that now total more than 12,000 miles ... that's just awe-inspiring.

In 1987, Lynn Parks was preparing for her wedding day when she was in a horrific car accident. Seven months later she awoke from a coma to see her fiancee, Jamie, by her side. During the years of therapy that followed, Jamie began taking Lynn on his many runs around the neighborhood and on races.

It was said Lynn would never stand or walk -- but seven years after her accident, she walked down the aisle and married Jamie. It was said she would never have children -- but in 2000, Jamie and Lynn welcomed their daughter into the world. Both Jamie and Lynn always dreamed of competing in the Boston Marathon and in 2008, they finally did.

Discovery Health channel is featuring Jamie and Lynn's inspiring story this Sunday. I'm going to be watching ... in fact, I've already got a reminder set on my TV. How about you?

Top 10 ways not to die -- diet and exercise included

Diet & Weight Loss

It should be no surprise that a nutritious diet and regular exercise help us live longer. That's why these two must-haves appear in a top 10 list created by Dr. G. Medical Examiner.

Day in and day out, Dr. G. determines how recently departed people died. Sounds like a morbid job, doesn't it? It's actually pretty amazing if you watch her show, though. She takes clues from everything and sometimes comes to unexpected conclusions. For families that have lost loved ones without much warning, I expect that the explanation of their loved one's death helps to give them closure.

An expert in death, Dr. G. has come out with a book to help preserve life. Discovery Health has her top 10 ways not to die. Here are a few of her tips:

  • Know your numbers. Keep your BMI in a healthy range by exercising and eating right. Check your blood pressure often. Have your cholesterol and blood sugar levels tested.
  • Listen to your body. Don't ignore unusual pains or aches ... tell your doctor about any concerns you have.
  • Use as instructed. Take medications according to your doctor's instructions.
