Daily Fit Tip: Eat your sunscreen
First off, lets just be clear: no matter what you eat, you still need to use topical sunscreen. No matter what.Okay, now that we're clear on that, let's get to the whole "eating your sunscreen" thing! The sun wreaks havok on our skin when the UV rays cause increased free-radicals that run rampant and leave nothing but damage in their wake. Some foods, particularly those high in antioxidants, can help to protect us from the sun by "mopping up" those nasty little bad guys and leaving our skin feeling younger, healthier, and (perhaps most importantly) cancer-free.
Daily Fit Tip: Stop overeating
Goodness knows I've done it. I'm a terrible emotional eater and, if I don't stop to think, I can easily find myself digging in the cupboard for food. Not to satisfy hunger, but in a futile effort to stuff down some other emotion. (I'm not proud, but there's the truth.) Even if you don't emotionally eat, it's easy to overeat when sitting down to watch a movie and the over-sized bucket of popcorn is right in front of you. To stop overeating, you have to understand your triggers. AOL Body has some great tips about overeating. Some of the causes:
- Environment. Restaurants invite you to relax, enjoy the environment, and usually order more. Fast food joints super-size your quick meals. Buffets let you eat all you can. Don't succumb to the environment and eat more than you normally would.
- Eating by association. You turn on the TV and it's time to snack, right? No! You're supposed to eat when you're hungry, not because your activity dictates it.
- Portion distortion. Our eyes play a big role in what we eat. If your plate is over-sized, don't be fooled into thinking the whole plate needs to be filled.
Daily Fit Tip: Wash your exercise mat
Because they spend most of their time on the floor, exercise mats are rarely cleaned as often as they should be -- when is the last time you gave yours more than just a good shake on the back step? It's probably due for a scrub! Lightly soiled
Make a solution of four drops of dish soap to two cups of water and wash dirty areas with a spray bottle, cloth, or sponge. Rinse with plain water and air dry.
Heavily soiled
Submerge the mat in warm water with just a touch of mild detergent (using too much could leave the mat slippery and dangerous in the future). Hand wash, rinse in plain water, and hang to air dry. If squeezing doesn't get enough water out of the mat, try rolling it up with a towel and stepping on it before separating the two and hanging the mat to dry.
Daily Fit Tip: Control your portions
Portion size can throw your best-laid diet plans off quicker than a bull bucks off a cowboy. We've become so accustomed to super-sized meals and big restaurant portions that we serve up big sizes as a matter of course. For most people, weighing and measuring foods isn't something they can reasonably sustain for the long-term. So the trick is learning to reliably recognize portion sizes by sight. Here are some tips for controlling portion sizes:- A quick way to check your portion size is to look at your clenched fist. If the food is larger than your fist, you're almost certainly eating more than you need.
- When eating at home or at a buffet, choose a small amount to start. Then, eat slowly and enjoy each bite. When you're done, take some time to let your body recognize that you're full. Having an overfilled plate just gives you the temptation to clean your plate like your mom used to preach.
- At restaurants, plan on eating only half of your meal and bringing the rest home for later.
- Eat healthy, small mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks. Letting yourself get ravenous will likely lead to overeating.

Daily Fit Tip: How to buy the best olive oil
I recently got married and moved into a new house, which means I'm cooking in a new kitchen and am all inspired to start trying new recipes. In the cabinets of a healthy kitchen, one of the most common players is olive oil (love a good stir fry) but getting what you pay for is isn't as easy as it should be. Many stores have bottles of oil that have been sitting for ages on the shelf (which diminishes not only flavor but also antioxidant benefits) and some companies are even fraudulently blending in filler oils like sunflower or soybean oil. For the best, healthiest olive oil, follow these tips:- Go for the smallest brands -- smaller growers almost always produce higher quality oil than mass producers.
- Keep your olive oil cool and dark, and look for brands packaged in dark bottles.
- Read the label carefully, intentionally vague statements like "imported from Italy" can be deceiving (it wasn't necessarily made in Italy).
- "Extra virgin" isn't necessarily the best. To be labeled extra virgin, olive oil must have an acidity of 0.8% or less, which isn't that hard to do. For really good oil, look for 0.5% or less.
