Vytorin debate continues

A medication frequently prescribed for high cholesterol came under fire a few months ago when a trial showed the medication -- a combination of simvastin and ezetimibe -- worked no better than simvastin alone. Simvastin is a statin designed to lower LDL cholesterol; ezetimibe is another medication that should lower LDL in another way.

The results of the trials regarding the efficacy of Vytorin are being discussed at the American College of Cardiology's annual meeting this week. At this point, researchers aren't entirely sure if the results of the trial are indicative of how Vytorin would affect those with mildly high cholesterol or those who are newly diagnosed; all the participants in the study had very high cholesterol and had been under treatment for years.

More young adults on cholesterol-lowering drugs

It's quite frightening to hear that cholesterol-lowering drugs are being used more by younger adults than even among the senior citizen population, but a report released this week said just that.

What does this mean? Are generations starting with those in their early twenties completely dependent on dead, over-processed and chemically-rich foods that our bodies are responding with increasing bad cholesterol levels?

Or, are more medications being prescribed to treat cholesterol than are needed? Hard to say, but higher rates of obesity, high blood pressure and related problems were referenced in the report in the younger generation of U.S. citizens. That right there tells me nutrition and exercise are, well, on opposite sides of the daily spectrum for many. As in, bad nutrition and inadequate exercise. Do you agree?

Cholesterol drugs linked to slight increases in cancer rates

Are you on statin drugs (hopefully, just one) to lower that "bad" cholesterol? If so, new findings say that you may indeed have a slightly increased risk of cancer.

A study of 41,000 patients stated that there was one additional case of cancer per 1,000 patients with lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. The correlation to statin drugs is a bit dubious here, but anything that lowers bad cholesterol levels could be thrown into the ring here I guess.

Perhaps not that diet, though. I doubt that eating a diet which helps create an environment of low "bad" cholesterol would increase your risk of cancer.
