We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs Weekly Roundup: April 18, 2008

Anna Kournikova participated in the Nautica South Beach Triathlon. Sort of, anyway. She ran a four mile portion as part of a relay team for K-Swiss. She held a very respectable 7:15/mile pace, but she had another goal that took up a good bit of her focus -- raising awareness for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The tennis player regularly incorporates running into her fitness routine, so this was not a huge stretch for her. Some observers say she's lost her curves, but I think she looks fit and healthy.

Mariah Carey is showing up everywhere lately, but there's less of her to see thanks to a lifestyle change and nutrition and fitness coach. She admits she's bummed to give up her comfort foods, like mac 'n cheese, but she's thrilled to be fitting into the same size jeans she wore in 10th grade.

Not only is Britney Spears working out at Bally (she's been there one to three times a day, lately) -- she just might become their newest spokeswoman. You know, if fitness plays a big role in Britney turning her life around, then Bally might be taking a really smart risk. Or not. Only time will tell.

Bionic people: Not as far-fetched as you think

Reviews & Products

The concept of mechanically engineered and technologically enhanced human beings (what a mouthful) is not a new one -- the character "The Bionic Woman" has been around since the 1970s. Most of us picture that kind of technology to be way off in the future somewhere, but in many ways it's here and possible today. Doctors can reconstruct your spine with steel vertebrae, use lasers to repair broken bones, and eliminate wrinkles with energy waves, to name just a few possibilities.

But sorry, no running faster than a speeding car available...yet.

Fit Mama: The distance

As people, and later, as parents, we set many goals for ourselves throughout our lives. Many of these goals are met and subsequently replaced by newer, often grander goals. We enjoy challenge in our lives--it makes us faster, stronger, smarter--kind of like the bionic woman.

But sometimes, every so often, a goal takes on a life of its own. Sometimes it becomes too large and looms out there in front of us as the golden carrot we will never reach. These goals become so enormous and encompassing (especially as we use all our energy to strive to meet them) that everything else gets left in the shadow of that giant goal.

And most of the time it's those smaller things, and the smaller goals, that are just as if not more important than the big goal.

When I first decided to run the New York City Marathon it was really for no good reason. I'd never wanted to run it in the past. I never had that strong desire that haunted my dreams. I enjoyed running, liked being fit, that kind of thing. But never once did I say my dream was to run a marathon, let alone the biggee in NYC.

The Bionic Woman's fit secrets

Celebs & Entertainment

Michelle Ryan looks great. Well, as the star of the new show Bionic Woman, I guess she kind of has to, but whether it's your job to look good or not, it's still hard work. She recently spoke out about the changes she's had to make to her life in order to prepare for the role. Here are some highlights:
  • (On how much time she spends at the gym) "About three and a half hours a day I would say. Two hours of personal training, or two hours of dance, and an hour and a half of circuit training."
  • (On her diet) "Just eating more like sushi and fish and fruit... [protein] and vegetables and cutting out -- I've got such a sweet tooth, so cutting out chocolate"
  • (On changes to her body as a result) "I'm getting abs and my muscles are getting bigger and I definitely feel like I'm being much more conscious to eat healthier."
Three hours a day of working out? No doubt she looks great. Still, it's not the most realistic plan for us non-Hollywood folks.

If you're a TV fan, you're probably excited about (or at least aware of) the new Bionic Woman series. In an effort to promote the show, NBC has created an online game that tests your memory, math skills and hand-eye coordination.

I consider myself a fairly competent person -- above average, even -- when it comes to these kinds of games. So, I figured I wouldn't have any problems as I clicked through the instructions and got started.

However, as you can see by my rather dismal results (above), I'm apparently no genius -- or, at least I'm not very "bionic." If you take the test, feel free to post your score below -- even if it will make my piddly 54% look even more embarrassing.
