Nationwide pattern of mental health and substance abuse problems

It's easy to assume that issues related to mental health and substance abuse are limited to only a few overcrowded, fast-paced locales. New York comes to mind, as does L.A., Miami, Boston, and Chicago. However, as an article in the current issue of Women's Health demonstrates, problems of this kind are hitting the rest of the nation just as hard.

The article cites a recent survey of more than 136,000 people over the age of 12, which was conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration. Heres a quick look at the findings:

TOBACCO USE
Highest: West Virginia (40.6 percent)
Lowest: Utah (22.1 percent)

MARIJUANA USE
Highest: Vermont (9.7 percent)
Lowest: Utah (4.3 percent)

ILLICIT DRUG USE
Highest: Rhode Island (11.2 percent)
Lowest: North Dakota (5.7 percent)

Dads' drinking/smoking makes it harder for moms to quit

It's a generally accepted fact that women should quit smoking and drinking while pregnant. But it's helpful for dads-to-be to quit as well. Not necessarily because of second-hand smoke (though that's a danger as well), but mainly because when one partner continues the unhealthy habits it makes it all the harder for the other to quit. If dad continues to smoke and/or drink it's harder for mom to quit and she's more likely to pick the habits back up after childbirth.

Researchers studied hundreds of expectant moms' and dads' substance abuse over a three-year period (including pregnancy). Their findings include:

  • 77% of female cigarette smokers and 50% of marijuana smokers used those substances to some degree during pregnancy; only 38% and 24% respectively reported cigarette or marijuana smoking.
  • Overall rates of smoking and drinking declined during pregnancy, but picked back up within six months after childbirth.

No link between ADHD meds and future drug abuse

Many ADHD medications are stimulant based. Past studies have produced confusing results regarding use of these stimulants and risk of future drug use. Some studies indicated kids who take the stimulant-based meds were more likely to abuse drugs. Others said they were no more likely. Yet others stated they were less likely to abuse drugs. A new study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, attempted to remove the methodological limitations of the previous studies and conduct more thorough research into the concern. No correlation between the use of stimulant-based medications and future drug or alcohol abuse was found. Kids on these medications are no more or less likely to abuse drugs than any other person.

I know the finding is a relief for me, as my own son is prescribed stimulant-based medications to help manage his ADHD symptoms. Long-term effects of these medications is always a concern for parents. It's good to know there's one concern I can cross off the list.

Another risk of binge drinking: Exploding bladders

Ladies, if you're planning on tying one on this weekend, don't drink too much. Besides the same old risks associated with binge drinking--impaired judgement, destroyed brain cells, a wicked hangover, etc--you're at risk for another problem: you might rupture your bladder.

According to reports, several woman have recently ruptured their bladders as a result of alcohol abuse. The condition is rare, but serious -- if urine leaks into the abdominal cavity, it can cause an infection that could be fatal.

Why is this happening? It's believed that because alcohol numbs sensation, these women didn't quite realize that they had to empty their bladders. Ugh. Sounds awful ... and awfully embarrassing.

Brit's bloated body: Are drugs to blame?

Britney Spears' less-than-perfect body of late has been getting lots of publicity -- both bad and good -- and here's a suggestion that would definitely fall in the bad category: Life & Style magazine is reporting that her bloated body is due to her excessive drug use, which was also one of the major reasons she lost custody of her sons. According to the article, "She's bloated, and she's stopped working out. She also starves herself for three days while drinking and doing drugs, and then when she comes down she binges on junk food." Drugs apparently are also the reason that her skin is looking lackluster these days, not doubt due to her unhealthy lifestyle.

Now, I don't know hot legit the article or it's sources are but if she is abusing drugs and alcohol, it's not surprising that her looks have started to suffer. Still, It's sad to see such a promising young star so far gone. Do you agree?

Study: 30% of U.S. adults have abused alcohol

It's hard to believe that almost a third of U.S. adults have actually abused alcohol, but that is exactly what the findings were from a new U.S. government study that was released just this week.

What's even more disturbing is that few of that 30 percent have received any kind of treatment. Now, I'm not sure how this study defined "alcohol abuse" in this study, but it did reveal that 43 percent of men and 19 percent of women were found to have admitted alcohol abuse at some point in their lives. I wonder if "getting drunk" once per lifetime is included here? Actually, the study did say that "alcohol abuse" was being defined as "drinking-related failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school or home; social or legal problems; and drinking in hazardous situations.

Additionally, alcoholism was characterized by compulsive drinking; preoccupation with drinking; and tolerance to alcohol or withdrawal symptoms. So, that pretty much ties up the specifics here. Does any of those fall under your domain? There is a 30 percent chance of "yes" to that question it looks like. Among ethnic proportions, the Native American and white population were found to have higher rates of drinking problems than other groups.

Alcohol problems different for men and women

The effects of drinking alcohol can manifest certain health issues differently in women than in men, according to a new piece of research.

The research stated that drinking problems in women may be harder to detect because of these differences. In fact, of the more than 2,700 men and women who took part in the study that fed the researcher's conclusions, men reported problems like bingeing or getting into fights.

On the flip side, women were more likely to report feeling depressed or guilty about their drinking. In a sense, these results may mean that women's early drinking problems may not be recognized early in many cases.

Alcohol and tobacco are worse than drugs, says study

Are illicit drugs or alcohol more dangerous to one's health? According to a new study out of London, alcohol and tobacco consumption are actually more harmful than some illegal drugs like marijuana or Ecstasy.

In what is going to end up as controversial research, this new "landmark" study concluded that alcohol and tobacco should be classified as illegal drugs in British law.

The study looked at creating a new framework for the classification of harmful substances based on the actual risks posed to society. I read this as not looking at the specifics of each illicit drugs in terms of negative health consequences, but the effects on society at large within the larger groups of "drugs" like alcohol or tobacco.

Alcohol leading killer in Finland

Finnish adults now have a pretty brazen #1 killer -- alcohol poisoning. The Finnish government said that alcohol is now the leading killer of Finnish adults. Alcoholic consumption reached an all-time high last year in the Nordic nation according to Finnish officials.

With alcoholism being a disease that affects millions worldwide, it's alarming that so many afflicted alcoholics can seek help and take control of the disease -- but perhaps just as many cannot do that. In Finland, more than 2,000 people between the ages of 15 and 64 were killed by alcohol poisoning or illnesses caused by alcohol consumption last year, according to the Finnish government.
