Q. Hi Fitz. I keep hearing both you and other people say I should do push-ups, but I'm a small woman and don't want to bulk up. Push-ups are hard, so should I do them if I want to stay toned yet trim? Alyssa
A. Great question, Alyssa! This common question is on the mind of many women, and I'm happy to give this answer as many times as there are women who need to hear it. What you need to know is that it requires extraordinary effort for most women to put on any sort of bulky muscle. That means: protein shakes, supplements and insane amounts of heavy lifting. Of course, there are a few rare women here and there who pack on muscle quickly, but if you're already telling me you are small ... you are not one of those rare women.

Q. Hello Fitzy. I need your help! I'm six feet tall and last year I was close to 300 pounds. I am now down to 250. I'm still in the process of losing weight but am stressed because I cannot get rid of my "man boobs."They're devastatingly embarrassing. I wouldn't take my shirt off at the beach if you paid me. What can I do to make them go away? Liam
A. Hi Liam. Isn't it funny how big boobs are super cool on a chic but not so much on a guy? Interesting. Listen, I feel for you. Man boobs are not the status symbol of the day, and it's hard for most people to deal with any unusual bulging pockets of fat. Man boobs, love handles, and saddles bags; nobody wants 'em!
Movies that inspire fitness
Finding time to work out is just one of the many daily hurdles we face in our quest to remain healthy. Another is finding the motivation. For some, this is just something they are able to muster up on a moment's notice. For others, it takes some sort of outside stimulus, be it a tangible goal (such as wanting to be a healthy role model for your kids) or something more abstract (like a song you listen to that amps you up). Whatever it is that stokes your inner fire, even if it seems stupid or foolish, do it.
For me, music works well, but movies are what really seem to keep me motivated. Maybe that's because I'm a filmmaker myself, or maybe it's just because I feel inspired by certain films. Whatever the case may be, the end result is that I become mentally prepared and excited to work out after watching the following four flicks:
Rocky. The soundtrack, the training sequence, and even the promotional tag line ("His Whole Life Was a Million to One Shot") are enough to make me want to run the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art ... starting from California.
Hoosiers. Such a great, great film. Even though it takes place in the 1950s in Indiana, it definitely brings me back to those grueling after-school practices with my high school basketball team. Stepping on the court and running a few games is easy after watching Coach Dale lead Jimmy Chitwood and their small-town Hickories to the state championship.
An Uzi at the Alamo. This film probably won't inspire anyone other than me, because it's a comedy that has absolutely nothing to do with fitness. But, since I'm the one who made the film, it serves as tangible proof of my hard work paying off in the end - something I am then able to apply to my efforts to make it to the gym. For my first film, and having made it on such a small budget, it's amazingly not half bad.
300. I can't think of any other film that features so many people in such great physical shape. If any of you guys out there are looking for a fitness role model, you have a full 300 to choose from in this movie. It's personally inspired me to try the Spartan 300 workout, which turned out to be a brutal assault on my body. Felt great.
Well, those are my four. What about you? Which movies really get you pumped up?
The 300 Workout
Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
It's near impossible to watch Frank Miller's epic film 300 without marveling at the peak physical condition that all of the actors are in. From the lead, Gerard Butler as King Leonid, down to Spartan Soldier #299 (whoever he may be), every last one of these dudes were shredded. You took a look at these guys and thought, if any 300 guys could take on an army of 1 million, it's probably them. But, in reality, Spartan warriors they are not. They're actors; thespians portraying the eight-packed, human version of a well-conceived graphic novel. So, the question remains: How did these guys get into such great shape?
The answer is the 300 workout, designed specifically for the film's actors and, according to Butler, designed to make them want to throw-up. Bottom line, the 300 workout is absolutely grueling, and I speak from experience after having following the routine myself for the past month.
Any interest in looking like a Spartan warrior? If you answered yes, then you're either crazy and a glutton for punishment, or you're still both of those but you are also looking for a killer, new workout. Well, to that I say: This is Sparta!!
No pain, no gain: The '300' workout
Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
The movie 300 is full of beautiful bodies -- the star, Gerard Butler's, in particular. A physique like that doesn't come easy, and what's quickly becoming famous as "The 300 Workout" is not something just anybody can, or should, try. The routine was designed by Mark Twight and includes everything from push-ups and pull-ups to dead lifts and box jumps -- reading through how the actors were trained it sounds more like a lesson in boot-camp torture than a typical day at the gym. The actual 12 week training system Mark Twight put Gerard Butler and the other actors through in order to get in "Spartan shape" may not be something for the average Joe (or Jane) to jump right into, but if you're motivated enough to do the necessary preparations (like talking to your doctor!) then you can get there eventually. And with all the press the movie and this new workout is getting, look for some modified -- and more realistic -- versions to be hitting a gym near you.
