Melissa Joulwan was the last girl picked for teams in gym class, and her closet has seen clothes in size 18, size 6 and everything in between. When she was 23, she started moving her body and eating healthy food in reasonable quantities. She did Jane Fonda tapes in her living room, then graduated to step aerobics and the Reebok slide, century bike rides and kickboxing, lifting weights and jump rope. She tackled triathlons and crossed the finish lines with more heart than speed. Then she discovered Flat Track Roller Derby and became a Rollergirl. When she retired her wheels, she wrote the book "Rollergirl: Totally True Tales From the Track." Just before she turned 40, she started doing CrossFit and running and eating like a cavewoman. Half marathons followed. She stares down the workout monsters every day, and she knows how hard it can be to get started and how great it feels to keep trying. She's on a mission to help women everywhere find their inner athlete, beat back their own workout monsters and become their own superheroes. She lives in Austin, Texas, and plays keyboards for her husband's band, St. Joe's Choir. Five of her favorite things are cold sheets, sports movies, lousy truck stop coffee, her husband Dave and Jane Eyre.
