A Cup of Joe
Who knew that a cup of coffee could have a thermogenic effect on the body? It turns out, drinking coffee can help you burn more calories. In a placebo-controlled study, researchers looked at 10 older men and 10 younger men who had moderate consumption of coffee. They found coffee ramped up the metabolic rate 11 percent in the younger men and 9.5 percent in the older group. What is moderate? About two cups of coffee per day. Coffee can also dampen the appetite, but moderation is key. And word to the wise: If you are not a coffee drinker and decide to jump into java in a big way, it's better to ease into it and consume one or two cups on a daily basis and not imbibe every once in awhile. You could experience jitters, heart palpitations and more -- so take it easy.
