I am happy to announce that I am completely drain free. I had the last one removed today and needless to say, I am ecstatic. The final drain held on for four weeks and two days. I don't know that anywhere along the way I was prepared to have a drain for this long. but I'm just glad it's over.

Overall, I cannot complain. As strange as it may be to say, the experience with my wonderful surgeon, Dr. Olivier, and her staff nearly outweighs the results of the surgery. They have really held my hand and answered every silly question I've had throughout this process. Believe you me, there have been some silly questions. I guess because she specializes in breast reconstruction of cancer patients she posesses an extra element of care and concern that I've missed in other New York City doctors. I've not only seen it with me but with every patient I've witnessed. It feels good to be in an office where I'm a person and not just another number.

I am slowly noticing a return of feeling in the area below my navel where it was completely numb. I'm no doctor but my best guess is the itching and tingling that I feel deep below the skin is some form of healing. These are the areas where feeling is beginning to return. The tingling only lasts a few seconds but can be aggravating because there's no possible way to scratch. My navel has healed very well and is starting to lighten in color.

I'm Karla and I have been -- or am -- all those things. Here, I will share with you my lifelong struggle with my weight and I hope you'll follow along on with my determined attempt to lose nearly 40 pounds. I promise to tell you every win and setback along the way every Tuesday and Friday.

Happy birthday to me! That's right, I'm officially thirty none of your business. HA! What's significant about this birthday is that I am closer in age to 40 than 30. Thanks to weight loss, eating right and working out, I feel closer to 30 than 40. Losing 200 lbs. has turned the clock back. Even simple things are new.

I can never remember crossing my legs until three years ago. Being the girlie girl that I am, I do it all the time. It reminds me that I've come so far and that I will never again be unable to cross my legs. In my old life, I experienced what I grew to call, "turnstile terror." Ever been too fat to get through a turnstile? Over the course of time, I learned to wiggle through sideways but I even outgrew that method.

Continue reading The Good, The Fat and The Hungry: Abdominoplasty Recovery Week 4

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Women's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Cellulite, Obesity, The Good, The Fat and The Hungry

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dieters pack on more pregnancy pounds

If you're a dieter, you're at risk for gaining excessive weight during pregnancy. Life isn't fair, is it?

Researchers queried 1,200 women about their dieting history, weight and pregnancy weight gain, finding most women with a history of dieting were more likely to exceed pregnancy weight gain recommendations -- no matter how much or little they weighed pre-pregnancy. However, underweight women with a history of dieting did not gain enough weight.

As overweight and obese have become commonplace in our society, doctors are taking a closer look at those pregnancy pounds. Too many pounds, and moms-to-be are at risk for Caesarean sections, a large baby, less breast-feeding and a nasty battle dropping the weight post-delivery. Trust me, new mommy bodies react differently to breastfeeding. I've witnessed pounds melt off magically for some, while others produced enough milk for a wet nurse biz, but still had trouble losing the weight. For me, I didn't drop the last five pounds until I stopped breast-feeding, then seriously watched my calorie intake and exercised like crazy. Less calories in, more calories out works every time.
Filed under: Women's Health, Diet and Weight Loss

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tweak your training for real results

Having a consistent workout routine is a good thing. Never budging from it though, can be a bad thing. Our bodies tend to adapt and become mighty efficient if we tell it to do the same thing over and over. We're a smart species! What can I say?

The October issue of Women's Health magazine has a great little section on various ways you can tweak traditional exercises to make them challenging once again. Give them a looksy and then give them a try. A little difference goes a long way.

Want to know the secrets of the stars? Bi-weekly, our That's Fit fitness expert Fitz sits down with the celebs we want to know more about, and digs out their great and not-so-great methods to staying healthy.

Pound for pound, Shawn Johnson would probably be the strongest member of the U.S. Army ... if she were in it. This petite 16 year old can do an insane amount of pull-ups on her first set alone, and has more drive than any NASCAR vehicle on the road. Wouldn't you love to have the strength, stamina and flexibility she's earned? Take some of the advice she gives here, and you may do just that. Just like the brilliant medals she won in Bejing this summer, Shawn's advice is golden!

Fitz: How many hours a week do you train before a competition?

Shawn: Before the Olympics I was training about 26 hours in the gym a week and up to five hours out of the gym running and swimming... doing anything extra I could.

Fitz: Your upper-body strength is amazing. How many pushups and pullups can you do?

Not too long ago, I wrote about a workout More Magazine had specifically for women over 40. Now, some More Magazine readers have stepped forward to show that they're over 40 and fitter than they were in their 20's.

Some of their tips:

Manage stress eating by making healthier, conscious choices.

See a trainer to develop a strength training routine.

Limit red meat and eat more fruits and vegetables.

Exercise daily.

Shove self-doubt to the side and don't shy away from a challenge.

Try a new activity.

Maybe it's to look better in that little black dress, or perhaps it's to cut cholesterol. Or, maybe you're just trying to live the healthiest life you can -- those are all fantastic reasons. And now, I've got one more reason for you -- supporting breast cancer research.

Shape magazine is once again sponsoring Pilates for Pink, an event benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). This past weekend the kick-off was held in Union Square Park, NYC, with Pilates being taught all day and lots of other fun things going on.

If you missed the NYC event, don't worry -- you still have plenty of ways to get involved. Pilates studios and fitness centers throughout the nation are participating, hosting classes to raise funds for the BCRF. You can see if your area is hosting one here, or, you can look into hosting your own event. If none of that works for you, there's still a live auction with some fabulous items to bid on.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Good, the Fat and the Hungry: Abdominoplasty Recovery -- Did someone say drains?

Welcome to the Good, the Fat and the Hungry. I'm Karla and I have been -- or am -- all those things. Here, I will share with you my lifelong struggle with my weight and I hope you'll follow along on with my determined attempt to lose nearly 40 pounds. I promise to tell you every win and setback along the way every Tuesday and Friday.

I'm sure there are drains in hell. I know we've heard about hell's heat, but I suspect that drains will be a nice surprise waiting for unsuspecting folks. If they aren't, I'll be surprised. I know drain hell personally because I'm still in it and two of the original three drains are still ... in me.

That's right folks, two weeks post-op, and I still have drains. Needless to say, I am less than happy about it. Again, my surgeon was very happy because it lends to better results for as much fluid as possible to be removed prior to taking the drains out. The alternative is to remove the drains and come to her office several times each week to have the fluid removed by needle. That's okay. I'll pass on that one.

She suggested I keep an eye on the output and call her when they are both below 25 cc's. Worse case scenario: She'll take them out in two weeks. Two weeks? Seriously? A month after surgery with drains? Wow. As of yesterday, they were 75 and 25 cc's respectively. I had an output in one of the drains of 15 cc's a few days ago and really got excited because I was sure that this drain had come to the end of its line -- until it produced 30 cc's the following day. I have great faith in my surgeon -- not only because she's one of the best but because I know she cares about her patients and the quality of her work. I'm keeping the drains. The drains themselves aren't so bad but the positioning is miserable. They are below the bikini line in the top of the pubic mound, hence they are very inconvenient. My chi-chi looks like a balled up fist ready to fight. Oh what joy.

Continue reading The Good, the Fat and the Hungry: Abdominoplasty Recovery -- Did someone say drains?

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Women's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Cellulite, Obesity, The Good, The Fat and The Hungry, Tuck It In

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Celebrity Fitzness Report: Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin

Curious to know how celebrities squeeze fitness into their daily lives?
Nastia Liukin was the darling of the U.S. gymnastics team this year as she conquered Olympic Gold in the All Around competition and proudly added to her collection four more medals. That would be three silver and one bronze; I personally would kill to have just one in any color. She's Russian born, American bred and now working with the Secret Sport Challenge to help make other athletic dreams come true. I scored this interview this week while she was promoting the Challenge and bringing attention to the twenty $5,000 scholarships being given away to help others achieve their sporty goals. Nastia is ridiculously fit and has some great advice to help you look better, feel stronger and live longer.

Fitz: How many hours a week do you train before a competition?

Nastia: Before the Olympics I trained for about seven hours a day. It included about two hours of warming up and conditioning, and the rest of the time was spent practicing routines and skills on the events.

Q. Hi Fitz, I'm a lady who is happily turning 51 next week and am finally ready to get into shape. It seems like I went from a skinny-as-a-rail teen to a weighty 180 pound middle-ager. There are so many weight-loss programs, tips, recipes out there, and it gets quite confusing. I don't like to exercise per se, but I love to garden, wash the car, play kickball, and dance. For both weight-loss and aging concerns, I know there are some diet changes I need to make as well. For instance, I've had to cut out 2% milk and switch to 1% because the higher-fat just didn't agree with me anymore. But what's the next step? High fiber, low-fat, no carbs, or carbs for daylight hours only? I missed the point when my body was supposed to be racked, stacked and packed! I'm now hoping it's not too late to achieve that at this stage in my life. Can you help? Atia

A. Hello Atia! I love your question. Glad to hear that after 50 years you're ready to make a grand effort towards a fitter, stronger, and with no shyness ... a hotter looking body! Of course it's not too late; it never is. I also agree with you that the information put out about fitness is far too confusing. Being an "expert" in the field, it's nice that people give me credit for being somewhat brilliant about it. I'll let you in on a little secret though (promise not to tell a soul?): All my years of education and experience have taught me this: Fitness is ridiculously simple.

I feel fat. I look in the mirror and I certainly don't look fat but I feel fat. If I close my eyes and visualize myself based solely on how I feel, I'd be that pig with the apple in its mouth. Since the abdominoplasty, I am able to eat even less and feel overstuffed quickly. I'd read about this ahead of time so thanks to the blogosphere, I was not completely caught off guard. I read several posts of people who felt this way the first few weeks -- thank goodness.

Of course, this emotional stuff is all in my mind. What I feel does not overcome what I see when I look in the mirror. Who I see looking back is the most beautiful me I have ever been. The reflection is the most fit me I've ever seen. My response to what I see is nothing less than ecstatic. These are new words to me -- beautiful, fit, ecstatic. Eating right and exercising have replaced the former words of disgust, obese, and painful.

Without my twice-weekly water aerobics class during both pregnancies, I don't know how my body would have survived. After doing the silly, but effective Rocking Horse, Jumping Frog and a ton of basic water walking, I could move more freely, my legs didn't ache, I slept like the sleeping baby growing inside me. Except for my youngest ... she kicked nightly harder than Mr. Tae Bo, Billy Blanks.

Turns out exercise during pregnancy can also help a woman quit smoking. Two new studies reveal 25 percent of pregnant women who regularly exercised quit the habit before birth. A much healthier alternative than nicotine patches which could be a risk during pregnancy. Walking at a moderate pace was the main activity.

So if you're pregnant and desperately trying to snuff out the smokes, walk regularly. Don't forget about the pool either, it's absolute heaven.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

One more reason to maintain a healthy weight

Maintaining a healthy weight lowers your risk of heart disease, type II diabetes and other obesity-associated conditions. But did you know that obese women are at a higher risk of having a miscarriage?

A research team followed up with nearly 700 women who had had unexplained miscarriages. The researchers determined that, for obese women, the risk of a second miscarriage was 73% higher.

Unless your OB/GYN gives you specific instructions to do so, it's not recommended that you try to lose weight while pregnant. Your best bet is to achieve and maintain a healthy weight before becoming pregnant. I'm Karla and I have been -- or am -- all those things. Here, I will share with you my lifelong struggle with my weight and I hope you'll follow along on with my determined attempt to lose nearly 40 pounds. I promise to tell you every win and setback along the way every Tuesday and Friday.

There aren't any. Just plain misery is associated with those words that can make any gastric bypass patient shudder. Nearly three years out and I thought dumping was a thing of the past. Until Tuesday night.

Most gastric bypass patients are aware of or have heard the horror stories of dumping. It occurs in patients who suffer malabsorption of sugar. Lap band patients typically do not have this problem since the entire stomach remains in tact and works fully. For those of us who underwent some type of stomach separation, the new smaller stomach does not produce enough acid to break down most sugars. When sugar is ingested it causes a violent reaction consisting of cold chills, profuse sweating, diarrhea and vomiting. In addition to these symptoms that typically occur simultaneously, there are violent stomach cramps.

Continue reading The Good, the Fat and the Hungry: The joys of gastric bypass dumping syndrome

Filed under: Fitness, General Health, Women's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Cellulite, Obesity, The Good, The Fat and The Hungry

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Meet the real women of the Go Red campaign

The American Heart Association's Go Red campaign draws attention to heart disease in women. The organization recently announced the nine women that are going to be the faces of the campaign.

While having a celebrity promote a cause is inspiring, I think having real women -- women that could be your friends, sisters, neighbors -- is even more inspiring. Take 39-year-old Cathy for instance; she's an athlete but when her heart rate skyrocketed unexpectedly she went to the doctor and was later diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. Or 53-year-old Patricia who underwent surgery after learning she had a severely blocked artery; while on the operating table she went into cardiac arrest and was miraculously revived. Their stories are going to be aired on NBC soon; AHA has an airtime schedule for your convenience.

You can also take inspiration from the seven real women that are the faces of AHA's Choose to Move fitness program.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pumping up changes laws of attraction

When you work out with weights, you naturally elevate your testosterone levels (check out this recent post about boosting testosterone). Naturally, raising testosterone levels via weight resistance training can be a very good thing for both men and women unless it causes you to be less attracted to your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend!

A recent journal publication reveals that women who have higher testosterone levels are attracted to men who have more masculine, "manly," high testosterone-like features -- such as the physical facial qualities that Russel Crowe or Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson possess. Men with elevated levels of the same hormone are more likely to be attracted to more feminine faces like Natalie Portman or Jessica Biel.

This fascinating study was conducted at the University of Aberdeen's Face Research Laboratory. Researchers had male and female volunteers view pairs of photographs of the opposite sex and asked them to choose who they found the most attractive. Each volunteer gave saliva samples to measure testosterone levels during their photo viewing sessions. This process was conducted four times in four weeks with each session one week apart. Face preferences changed as testosterone levels changed. For women, if testosterone was found to be lower, they would choose a less masculine face and conversely, if the hormone was higher, they selected the image of one who had more chiseled, macho features! Men selected more feminine faces when their testosterone was higher. What does all this mean?

Continue reading Pumping up changes laws of attraction

Filed under: Fitness, Health in the Media, Healthy Relationships, Women's Health, Men's Health

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sweet, tasty and tart in one place

A quick surf session brought me a collage of the weird faces people make when they dance, a piece from a model on how to take a decent pic and, my favorite, how to handle a Facebook request from someone who really isn't a friend.

I made sure to take note of the 1,600-calorie desserts, too, so I can avoid them!

Filed under: Health in the Media, Women's Health

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Abdominoplasty: Recovery Week 1

Welcome to the Good, the Fat and the Hungry. I'm Karla and I have been -- or am -- all those things. Here, I will share with you my lifelong struggle with my weight and I hope you'll follow along on with my determined attempt to lose nearly 40 pounds. I promise to tell you every win and setback along the way every Tuesday and Friday.

I am not happy. I mean, I am happy with life overall, but I am not happy about my tummy tuck drains. I am one week post-surgery and still, I have them -- all three of them -- with removal nowhere in sight. You see, I experienced a drain blockage last week, which slowed the process considerably (I think this is atypical for most tummy tucks). I guess some gunk got stuck on the way out and clogged the drains, located between the pubic area and the bottom of my abdomen. Besides this hassle, I've got cords that, while long enough to pin to clothing, are in my way -- all three of them.

So, I saw my doc's physicians assistant today, and she said with the amount of fluid still draining, the drains should stay in place. She was actually happy about this and said we'd take a look on Thursday when I see my surgeon. I trust her completely, so they are right where she left them -- in me. I've read many stories of fortunate folks who had their drains out in a few days or even a week -- I just am not one of those lucky folks.

Continue reading Abdominoplasty: Recovery Week 1

Filed under: Fitness, Food and Nutrition, General Health, Women's Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Cellulite, Obesity

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Do yoga every day to keep the doctor away

Do you yoga? If you do, then you already know about how it can tone the body and create long, lean muscle lines. But what you might not know is that not only can yoga give you a firmer physique, it can also prevent and control health problems.

Experts believe it's yoga's stress-relieving style that makes it so special. Studies show that combining regular yoga with healthy lifestyle changes can drop cholesterol points up to 23%. Women in menopause report that yoga can relieve their symptoms. And a study of women in treatment for breast cancer found that women reported feeling better after treatment when they did yoga regularly.

Want to learn more about the powerful medicinal benefits of yoga? Forbes has more in their gallery, including:

Yoga improves balance, important for seniors who could be seriously injured in a fall.

It relieves pain from conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Yoga can improve digestive and respiratory health.

Yoga relieves stress and can improve a person's outlook.

It can make bones stronger, important for women who are at risk for osteoporosis.

Do more than just wear your yoga pants around the house. Put them on and get yourself to a class to see what else yoga can do for you.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

What room has the best sports bra info? And, while I hope you aren't embarrassed to jump around in the dressing room when trying on sports bras, there's another way to see how bounce-proof a particular sports bra is -- the HerRoom Bounce Test Videos.

HerRoom has exclusive videos of women jogging and jumping around in, oh, I don't know, maybe a million different sports bras. And, after viewing the bra, there's a link you can follow to buy it, right there!

The tagline of HerRoom is "Lingerie We Buy For Ourselves," and I believe it. They do a great job of providing lots of information on a variety of different high-impact sports bras in one location. And, while you're there, if you want some sexy lingerie or other undies to show off the fabulous figure you've worked so hard for, you have that option, too. Happy shopping!
Filed under: Women's Health, Fit Fashion

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
