Never budging from it though, can be a bad thing. Our bodies tend to adapt and become mighty efficient if we tell it to do the same thing over and over. We're a smart species! What can I say?

The October issue of Women's Health magazine has a great little section on various ways you can tweak traditional exercises to make them challenging once again. Give them a looksy and then give them a try. A little difference goes a long way.

Nastia Liukin was the darling of the U.S. gymnastics team this year as she conquered Olympic Gold in the All Around competition and proudly added to her collection four more medals. That would be three silver and one bronze; I personally would kill to have just one in any color. She's Russian born, American bred and now working with the Secret Sport Challenge to help make other athletic dreams come true. I scored this interview this week while she was promoting the Challenge and bringing attention to the twenty $5,000 scholarships being given away to help others achieve their sporty goals. Nastia is ridiculously fit and has some great advice to help you look better, feel stronger and live longer.

Fitz: How many hours a week do you train before a competition?

Nastia: Before the Olympics I trained for about seven hours a day. It included about two hours of warming up and conditioning, and the rest of the time was spent practicing routines and skills on the events.

Fitz: If you weren't a professional athlete/gymnast how do you think you'd pursue fitness?

Continue reading Celebrity Fitzness Report: Olympic Champion Nastia Liukin

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Good, the Fat and the Hungry - Abdominoplasty Recovery Week 1

Filed under: Womens Health, Cellulite, Obesity, The Good, The Fat and The Hungry, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

Welcome to the Good, the Fat and the Hungry. Here, I will share with you my lifelong struggle with my weight and I hope you'll follow along on with my determined attempt to lose nearly 40 pounds. I promise to tell you every win and setback along the way every Tuesday and Friday.

I am not happy. I mean, I am happy with life overall, but I am not happy about my tummy tuck drains. I am one week post-surgery and still, I have them -- all three of them -- with removal nowhere in sight. You see, I experienced a drain blockage last week, which slowed the process considerably (I think this is atypical for most tummy tucks). I guess some gunk got stuck on the way out and clogged the drains, located between the pubic area and the bottom of my abdomen. Besides this hassle, I've got cords that, while long enough to pin to clothing, are in my way -- all three of them.

So, I saw my doc's physicians assistant today, and she said with the amount of fluid still draining, the drains should stay in place. She was actually happy about this and said we'd take a look on Thursday when I see my surgeon. I trust her completely, so they are right where she left them -- in me. I've read many stories of fortunate folks who had their drains out in a few days or even a week -- I just am not one of those lucky folks.

Continue reading The Good, the Fat and the Hungry - Abdominoplasty Recovery Week 1

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask Fitz!
Q. Hi Fitz, When I go walking with my friends I notice that I often sweat and it shows through the back of my shirt and armpits. I know sweating is good but not when you are the only one that looks like that when walking with other ladies. It is really embarrassing. What can I do? Laney

A. Hi Laney. I'm so sorry you're feeling icky, sticky, and embarrassed walking with your friends. It's rarely fun to feel like the odd one out. I'm thrilled you came to me though, because I can assure you that you are not! I train dozens of people each week, and almost across the board ... every client apologizes to me for sweating profusely.

Continue reading Ask Fitz! We're busy. Really busy. In fact, a recent study found that women work a 15-hour day, no matter how many hours they actually put in at their jobs. So it's understandable that we may make a few mistakes throughout the day -- forget to pick up milk, send a child to school without her lunch money, leave the cat out all night. It's just going to happen.

But according to Prevention, women are also making big mistakes when it comes to health. But unlike forgetting to wash your daughter's soccer uniform, making mistakes about diet, fitness, and lifestyle can cost you more than inconvenience in the long run. If you're guilty of some of the following mistakes, take a closer look at where healthy habits rank on your list of priorities and see if you can't make a difference in your own personal health.

Gallery: <a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/">Are you making these health mistakes?
<a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/1018805/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/1018804/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/1018803/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/1018802/"><a href="http://".$GLOBALS["HTTP_HOST"]."/photos/are-you-making-these-health-mistakes/1018801/">

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Secondhand smoke damages blood vessels quickly

Filed under: Healthy Habits, Womens Health, HealthWatch, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Men's Health
About a month and a half ago, while I was out in Wisconsin, I was surprised to find that smoking is still allowed in restaurants. Being a native New Englander who has also lived in California -- where smoking in restaurants and bars has been banned for quite some time -- my personal knowledge of smoking bans caused me to be somewhat presumptive in thinking this was a nationwide trend. No offense to Wisconsin (or any other states that don't have a restaurant/bar smoking ban) ... but shouldn't it be?

If you take a recent Women's Health article on the topic of secondhand smoke into consideration, it's hard to argue against such a suggestion. According to said article, it takes thirty minutes or less for secondhand smoke to damage blood vessels and increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Even such brief exposure disrupts normal expansion and contraction of blood vessels -- and it destroys EPCs, cells that help repair the arterial lining.

Look, I'm all in favor of people having the right to live their life without too much government interference. But, people eating at a restaurant also have the right to not have secondhand smoke destroy their blood vessels. If so, it's time you got off the floor and on your feet again, because the only way you're going to get those abs popping is to reduce your body fat.

Generally speaking, the men and women you see gracing the covers of fitness magazines have a body fat percentage of less than ten percent. And, as you can tell by looking at them, they definitely have ab muscles. The thing is, so do you; the only difference is, if you can't see yours, it's because they're hidden behind a layer of subcutaneous fat.

To shed this fatty layer and expose your six-pack, stick to a sensible diet (no simple sugars, keep unhealthy fats to a minimum, eat plenty of protein, and keep caloric consumption under control) and follow a cardio program that works for you. For some people, this means utilizing a high-intensity interval training workout, which has been shown in numerous studies to blast fat at a rapid rate. Other people prefer longer durations of moderate-intensity cardio work, which is effective in its own right. One suggestion would be to alter cardio programs every four to six weeks, so as to avoid reaching a fitness plateau. Another great way to help reach your goals faster is to incorporate a resistance training program, ideally in the form of a weightlifting circuit routine. Follow this approach and those ab muscles of yours will come out from hiding in no time.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Can plants be a good source of protein? In fact, most fitness experts these days suggest regularly including soy as part of a healthy diet, particularly in a post-workout meal.

Here's a few reasons why:

Soy enhances muscle recovery and growth

It increase nitric oxide (NO) production

It enhances fat loss

It improves heart health and protects against certain types of cancers

In the past, many people avoided soy because they believed it was an inferior source of protein. However, as evidenced by the above stated list of health benefits, this is clearly not the case. Just the same, there still exists a fair amount of opposition to this pro-soy stance. There, I enjoyed some great hikes, some nice long walks, and the benefit of crisp, fresh air. But, I also enjoyed waaaaaay to many calories at the dozens of ice cream shops that lined the streets. As a kid, I could have eaten these treats with relative impunity. These days, however, these temporary lapses in my fitness judgment can only be afforded if they remain just that: temporary.

It's a natural -- though very unfortunate -- fact that our metabolism tends to slow down somewhere around the age of 25. From there, it slows down by around five to ten percent with each subsequent decade that passes. Does this mean that you're fate is sealed and that you must accept your overweight destiny? Not at all.

By exercising regularly, you can keep your metabolism decline under a great deal of control. For the most part, if you get up and start moving every day you can very well increase your metabolism, or at least keep it to around a 0.3 percent drop, per decade.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Short circuit

Filed under: Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
If we continue at the rate we're going, the entire U.S. population will be obese in 50 years. That's what a recent University of Missouri study suggests, anyway. Even if it doesn't turn out to be completely true, it's easy to see how it can still end up being quite close.

What can we do about it? Best I can tell, the only solution is to shape up. Through diet and regular exercise, the obesity epidemic can become a thing of the past, rather than an inevitable part of our future. With that little pep talk over, I feel obliged to now offer up a quick health tip. OK ... here goes.

Try a resistance training circuit routine to blast the maximum amount of fat in the shortest amount of time. Create a circuit of at least five to seven muscle-toning resistance exercises, spending 30 seconds or less in between sets. Shoot for high rep counts (at least 15 reps per set) and use lighter weights than you would if you were using longer break periods. Once you've finished the complete circuit, start all over again for another full go-around. By the end of this second circuit, you're heart will be racing, your muscles will be aching, and your lungs will be on fire. Oh, don't worry ... that all means you're doing it right!!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Build a body like a Greek god

Filed under: Womens Health, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
A cup of yogurt can make for a healthy snack, but not if you reach for a sugar-filled brand. Even the fat burners that have shown some promise still require that a healthy diet and regular exercise program are still followed.

Could it be possible that it's the diet and exercise that's actually causing the weight loss, and that the fat burner pills have no impact whatsoever? It's entirely possible, actually. And, there are some definite cons to using fat burners, chief among them being an increase in blood pressure. What's more, certain fat burners may also disrupt sleep cycles if taken too close to bedtime, in addition to causing some people to feel jittery and anxious.

So, even if there is any truth to the claim that fat burners can help boost metabolism, it may be at the expense of your overall health.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Big up for breakfast

Filed under: Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
Want to lose weight? Clearly this is a problem, as high cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, the number one killer of women.

So, what should your numbers be? I'd suggest that you talk to your doctor to find out the answer to this question. In the meantime, here's a pretty good guide:

Total Cholesterol (HDL + LDL + Triglycerides): You should aim to keep it less than 200 mg/dL.

Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL): Try to keep this bad cholesterol at a level of less than 100 mg/dL.

High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL): Keeping this good cholesterol at around 50 mg/dL or higher is a good idea.

Triglycerides: Keep these energy-storing fatty acids at a level of less than 150 mg/dL.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask Fitz!
Q. Hi Fitz, I'm 26 years old and have never been happy with my upper body. My arms are lanky and my chest is soft. I have a demanding job as an attorney, and simply don't have the time nor the know how to get involved in a complicated training regiment. I know I have to "earn" a good body, so I was hoping you could dumb things down for me. A simple routine I can do in a hurry. P.S. I love your fit tip videos! Thanks. Tim

A. Hello Mr. Tim! Training for a guy with "no time" huh? That' my specialty! Glad you asked. Look pal, I wish I could pull off the persona as a rocket scientist, because I'm on top of this stuff ... but I can't. Fitness is painfully simple, and you can achieve your goals without much complexity.

Continue reading Ask Fitz! They were featuring the state as it is hosting the Republican Convention in St. Paul. (That title is meant to be read with an adorable accent.)

Apparently all the folks in Minnesota aren't in "the know" about health. On display in this feature was an obnoxious amount of fried food being carried around on sticks. Mmmmm. Heart disease. Corn dogs, fried chips, fried meat and to top it off, chocolate covered bacon!

Would you ever even consider eating this? It looked pretty fowl to me, though I am fairly particular about what I put in my mouth. I can only imagine some guy sitting in a diner one day thinking, "how could I improve on this strip of pig fat? I know! Let's dip it in chocolate!"

Continue reading Don't cha knoooow? It's something I've been eating several times a week, and it really has served me well. I insist that my food be: low cal, low fat, high fiber, often high in protein and overall nutritious. This Protein Power Potato fills me up, and gives me the energy to get through tough workouts or wild days with my kids. (It keeps me really trim too.)

I've included an option for making this a vegetarian or carnivorous option as well. Since I understand food, and know what I want out of it ... sometimes I just look in my fridge and concoct something that's going to give me what I need. That's how we got this meal. Did I mention this thing is delicious too? Mmmmm. I could eat it every day!

But if you practically live in stilettos, here's a good reason to take a break from all that height: Heels can cause major problems in your feet, legs and back. In fact, you could end up like the British Apprentice contestant Claire Young, who says that heels ruined her spine and left in with pain so severe that she missed the final of the show.

It started as a nagging pain that she ignored, but the TV reality star eventually did so much damage to her spine that she couldn't get out of bed for weeks. In her own words: 'I've suffered too much to go back to my high heels again - I wear them only on special occasions. I had always joked that my shoes had killer heels, but believe me, I've learned to my cost the real meaning of the term.'

My advice? Stick to flats, and save the heels for rare dressy occasions. And when you do wear heels, wear them well.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Do doctors see all women as pre-pregnant?

Filed under: Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss
Jennifer over at ParentDish has a really interesting post about how women are perceived by their health care providers. It stemmed from a discussion over at the NYT's Well Blog, about all women of childbearing age being viewed as "pre-pregnant" or as "walking uteruses" when being treated for medical conditions. Do doctors assume that all women are pregnant until proved otherwise? And does it have an impact on their ability to treat us as whole patients?

This trend, say experts, started in the 1960s when doctors realized that drugs -- thalidomide was the drug in question -- taken by the mother could harm the fetus. Since the, when treating conditions or precribing medication, doctors have to consider the theorhetical fetus any time they treat a woman. At Well Blog, they're asking the question: Is this appropriate?

I'm used to being asked "Are you/could you be pregnant?" But for the most part, my doctors believe me when I assure them that no, I'm not. They respect that I'm in charge of my body and my fertility. Then again, on one very important occasion, I was wrong, adamantly wrong until proved otherwise through a pregnancy test. So it's easy for me to see both sides of this issue.

What do you think? Do doctors worry too much about a woman's reproductive status when making medical decision? Or is it appropriate to assume that any woman of child-bearing age could be pregnant?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
