If you have a slice of delicious cake, would you think it's OK to chow down the whole cake in one sitting? Of course not. Common sense would tell you that a whole cake is just too much. Unfortunately, when it comes to health advice, not everybody uses common sense.

I recently wrote a post about the benefits vitamin D can have on heart health. That's only one of the perks of vitamin D that has been in the press lately. Now many people -- buying into the vitamin D kick hook, line and sinker -- are buying high-dosage vitamin D supplements from pharmacies and health food stores.

There is no science that says high doses of vitamin D are necessary. And why waste your money on a supplement when vitamin D is so readily available from other sources? Sunlight is your best source, but again, it's important to be reasonable. You don't want to spend too much time in the sun without the protection of sunblock, so a few short 10-15 minute walks outside each week will do. Vitamin D is also available in fortified foods such as milk, some cereals, and orange juice, and it's naturally found in salmon and other oil-rich fish.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Design your own Energy Bar

Filed under: Vitamins and Supplements, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

On the run? Grab and energy bar -- they're a good source of the nutrients you need when you're in a hurry. But sometimes it's hard to find one you like, so one company has come up with a novel approach to finding the right energy bar.

Element Bars offers you the ability to build your own energy bar. You start by choosing the core of the bar -- your choices are chewy, oaty, crispy and datey. Then you select your fruit--blueberries, cherries, apricots, etc.--followed by the kind of nuts you want and any sweet stuff you care to add (including chocolate chips ... mmm.) Finally, you can select add-ons like protein, fibre and Omega-3s. Neat, huh?

The best part? They have a nutrition chart on the side that let's you know the running calorie count of your custom bar so if you're watching carbs, calories or fat, you can make sure you stay within an acceptable range.

Thanks for the tip, Gadling!

Research shows that drinking a caffeinated beverage prior to a workout can help a person lift more weight and complete more reps. What's more, caffeine -- in particular, coffee -- is one of the main single sources of antioxidants in the American diet, which means that it helps neutralize free radicals as it helps burn fat and improve athletic performance.

There have been over 21,000 studies conducted on the health benefits/detriments of caffeine on the body. And though I obviously focused on a benefit in this post, it's worth knowing that other research indicates that consuming too much caffeine can restrict blood flow during exercise. Clearly this falls into the "detrimental" category. However, in this study, participants consumed 300mg of caffeine, or the equivalent of about three cups of home brew. Therefore, using the results of said study as our guide, if you keep your pre-workout caffeine intake to one cup, you should be just fine.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Let's go back in time and eat like they did in the 1800s

Filed under: Vegetarian, Vitamins and Supplements, Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
We've made tremendous progress in the fields of food, health and technology since the Victorian era. And yet we're not nearly as healthy overall as we were then. What gives?

Recent research is showing that not only did people live longer in the late 1800s, but they had strong immune systems too. Of course, there are several differences in the average Victorian diet compared to ours. Here's a rundown:

They ate more, around 4,500 calories a day for men and 3,000 for women.

But they also burned more calories, spending their working hours doing hard manual labour.

Salt, sugar and tobacco weren't as readily available, and were rarely consumed.

They ate between 8-10 servings a day of fresh fruits and veggies.

In fact, all their food was fresh. After all, they didn't have fridges.

They consumed lots of yeast, in both breads and beer. Yeast helps strengthen the immune system.

Although I value science and medicine, quite often I can't stand the affects they have on me. I simply can't stand to be drowsy, foggy or affected in any way. Prescriptions are great if they fix what's wrong with you, but all of the side effects are for the birds. I suppose if we all took each drug correctly, we may have less. So, I was particularly intrigued when Women's Health posted a study regarding drug labels.

According to a survey in the Annals of Internal Medicine, almost half of the participants misunderstood drug warning labels, and most ignored the directions altogether. This gallery provides some of the most common instructions you'll find on those little stickers slapped on each bottle and what they really mean.

Q. Hi Miss Fitzness, I'm a vegetarian, but still weigh 34 pounds more than I'd like to. What gives? I thought vegetarians were supposed to be skinny, and I hate being chubby! Meredith

A. Hello Meredith, Thanks for writing! Vegetarianism can have tons of benefits, and a trim physique can be one of them, if done right. Having said that ... it's very easy to go wrong as well. Here is the deal. Vegetarians don't necessarily eat all fruits and vegetables ... vegetarians just don't eat meat. There are tons of products that have no animal products in them, yet are still super high in calories and fat. Let's start with a short list of some vegetarian approved products:

Flour

Sugar

Oil

Frosting

Gummy Bears

Good for him, I thought. He obviously must be starting to workout and follow a healthy diet, which is why he must also be supplementing with protein drinks. But then, when he opened his car door, I noticed a large Burger King bag on the passenger side seat and a huge bottle of Coke in his cup holder. And that's when I felt bad for the guy.

Understand, my feeling bad for this man had absolutely nothing to do with the fact he was overweight. Rather, it was because the man had clearly fallen victim to the sharks out there -- in magazines, on TV and radio commercials, and even in retail stores -- who purposely mislead people into believing that certain pills and powders are a panacea for weight loss. Don't get me wrong, I realize I could have misjudged this entire situation. For all I know, that man planned on throwing away that bottle of Coke the moment he returned home and that the Burger King bag was completely empty, a vestige of the unhealthier past life he was now attempting to leave behind. Regardless, what I saw at that very moment -- even if what I saw was predicated on assumption -- was emblematic of a much larger problem.

Supplements are exactly what their name implies. They are not replacements for whole foods, nor are they a "get-out-of-the-gym free" cards. They are designed (well, those that actually work, that is) to assist you in achieving your fitness goals -- to give you that extra little boost, if you will. What they are not designed to do is allow you to eat junk, sit around all day, and not put in any effort yet still get you results. No pill, powder, gel or cream will ever, ever, ever do anything even remotely close to what it claims it will if you do not also follow a healthy diet and rigorous exercise program. So, I implore you, before rushing out and dropping your hard earned cash on the latest and greatest weight loss or muscle-building supplement, save your money for a gym membership and a shopping trip at Whole Foods. Mark my words, the return on your fitness investment will be far greater.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The hottest new supplement for Olympians

Filed under: Vitamins and Supplements, Womens Health, Celebrities and Entertainment, Obesity, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

With the Olympics coming up, the use of supplements to enhance performance is big business. I asked my pal Jose Antonio, PhD, Sports Nutrition expert what was hot and gave me this scoop. Besides safe and effective supplements like creatine, protein powders, and even fish oil, there's a new kid on the block. It's called beta-alanine!

Beta-alanine is basically an amino acid that has been shown to help fight off the fatigue-promoting effects of lactic acid. When muscle pH drops from intense exercise, beta-alanine helps buffer this increased acidity. Technically, it is muscle carnosine (which is made from beta-alanine) that does the buffering.

What could beta-alanine help as far as Olympic events? Sports like wrestling, the long sprints such as the 400 meter dash, boxing, and team sports in which there is a lot of sprinting can be helped. In fact, a recent study from the International Journal of Sports Medicine proved that beta-alanine significantly improved muscular endurance. So for those of you seeking that extra performance edge, look out for beta-alanine!

Continue reading The hottest new supplement for Olympians

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

7 Age Defying Tips from Cheryl Ladd & Elizabeth Somer , R.D.

Filed under: Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Stress Reduction, Sustainable Community, Vitamins and Supplements, Work/Home Balance, Womens Health, Celebrities and Entertainment, Healthy Products and Reviews, Cellulite, Obesity, Healthy Events, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Motivation, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

I'm on the plane flying home from the Prilosec OTC Roundtable Discussion with the gorgeous actress, Cheryl Ladd and nutrition expert, Elizabeth Somer, R.D in New York City. They/we discussed the benefits that both a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude can have on today's Baby Boomers. I was happy to see two bright women, both 57 years old, who were able to close in on 60 without being or looking "old". While preserving their appearances and health, they still embrace and enjoy the gifts that come with aging.

Both Cheryl and Elizabeth personify the woman I hope to be when I am of similar age. Not only because they are gorgeous women who have defied the years physically though. Their healthy eating choices, chronic exercise habits, and joyous perspectives on life offer proof that with decent effort one can earn a long, productive, enjoyable life.

My guest this week became famous as one of the hot, yet capable babes of Charlie's Angels. This role that burned Cheryl Ladd's name and face into our minds forever, in my opinion, will not in the end, be what we remember her for. We spoke recently both over the phone and in person, and she definitely showed a side of her I hadn't expected to see.

Although stunningly beautiful, and more capable of turning heads at age 57 than most women are at 25 ... Cheryl's most impressive quality in my book is her willingness to take care of other women. She's investing a lot of time in guiding and educating other Baby Boomer women about menopause. Menopause is often a taboo, hush hush topic. But Cheryl has embraced her age and stepped up to the plate to help make her personal experience with menopause an educational experience for others. She shared a bunch of private experiences with me and offered advice for growing more beautiful each year. Read on to learn how to age as gracefully and gorgeously as she has.

Fitz: You're an iconic figure in beauty. You've aged flawlessly, and to me ... you're prettier today than you were 30 years ago starring in Charlie's Angels. What can we do, to be more like you?

Cheryl: First of all, I think it's most important for women to have a close relationship with their doctor. It's important to trust your doctor, so when things go weird you are comfortable addressing the situation and taking care of things. Be proactive with your health! You also have to love yourself! Beauty comes from the inside first.

Fitz: Well your outside is pretty fantastic too. Let's start with your fitness routine. What do you do to stay in such great shape?

I recently returned from a fabulous vacation with my family at Walt Disney World in Florida. Our six-day adventure was non-stop fun, and a major highlight of this trip were our days at the Disney water parks. We enjoyed both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon to the max and would love to go back every sunny day of the year.

I had a little sad moment though as I chatted with a father of two little ones in the kiddie section of Blizzard Beach. We were commenting on what a challenge it was to keep perfect track of our children in such a busy, water-filled place. The poor guy told me he was alone with his children, because his wife didn't feel like she could go out in public in her swimsuit. He didn't want the kids to miss out on the water fun, so he took them himself. She stayed back at their resort.

It made me amazingly sad to think that this woman felt so uncomfortable in her skin that she couldn't even enjoy a beautiful day with her family at a ridiculously perfect place. I know we all feel self conscious at times (including me). And even as my profession is to educate and inspire others to be more fit ... I wouldn't want anyone to place their life on hold because of their body shape or size. That woman is a really special part of her family, and I imagine they missed her very much.

Continue reading Who is entitled to have fun in the sun?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chinese red yeast rice prevents heart attack

Filed under: Vitamins and Supplements, Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Chinese red yeast rice, a common ingredient in Chinese food, may prevent a repeat heart attack.

In a newly published study in The American Journal of Cardiology, nearly 5,000 men and women with recent history of heart attack either took 600 milligrams per day of a yeast rice extract or a placebo. Over five years, extract-takers reduced their risk of a coronary event by 45 percent, and risk of death and need for an operation to improve blood supply to the heart was reduced by about one-third.

Purchasing red yeast rice extract over the counter is not the answer here -- the study's senior author stated these findings do not apply to the red yeast extract sold in health food stores. Who knows, maybe they'll bottle this stuff for retail sale in the future.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Energize your workout

Filed under: Vitamins and Supplements, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
It's kind of strange, really; there are literally thousands of supplements out there claiming to do this and that for your health and fitness, yet very few have the empirical research to prove it. And, as odd as it may seem, the one thing that continuously shows promise in scientific studies is a household ingredient almost everyone already uses: Caffeine.

In a recent study published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition Exercise, evidence shows that caffeine reduces "pain" during exercise. Now, I put the word pain in quotation marks because I feel it's necessary to clarify something first before proceeding about the study. Unlike the old fitness maxim "No Pain, No Gain," the pain described in this case refers to the buildup of tenseness in the muscles. The burn, if you will. Pain should never be the goal; in fact, pain should be avoided at all costs. Yearn For the Burn? Sure, that fitness credo works fine. But No Pain, No Gain? Sorry ... no dice. Anyway, sorry for the cautionary detour. Back to the study.

Researchers discovered that when volunteers were given 5mg of caffeine per kilogram of bodyweight, they reported less muscle fatigue during a 30-minute session on an exercise bike (at 80-percent effort) than volunteers who were given a placebo. Bear in mind, however, that excessive amounts of caffeine have also been shown in separate studies to restrict blood flow during exercise. Therefore, using this old and new information as a general guide, it seems that allowing yourself a small amount of caffeine before workout is a safe and effective way to give yourself a little boost.

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Designer Whey Protein Blitz

Filed under: Vitamins and Supplements, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
When you're on the go, it's sometimes difficult to find a healthy snack. That's why fitness-conscious people like you and I have grown to become quite resourceful, using Macgyver-like techniques to make something healthy and tasty out of what we have readily available. But, I'll be the first to admit that this endeavor is not always easy, nor are the solutions always palatable.

This is why premixed protein drinks can oftentimes be convenient fixes. They're usually low in sugar and fat, and serve up a healthy dose of protein; a great mix for the time-crunched fitness fanatic. However, with the summer heat already climbing to record-breaking temperatures, thick, milky protein drinks are -- as Ron Burgandy (aka Will Farrell) says after downing a carton of milk on a sweltering day in the movie Anchorman) -- "... a bad choice."

Enter the much more summer-friendly, fruit-flavored Designer Whey Protein Blitz.

Packed with 30 grams of protein and 7,800mg of muscle-building BCAAs (Branch Chain Amino Acids) per 20oz bottle, this fruity drink lacks nothing in the nutrition department. As for the taste, I've now tried all three flavors (WTF ... Orange Mango; Can you take this ... Punch; and Grip it good ... Grape) and was pleasantly surprised to find that they all tasted quite good, unlike some of the few other fruit-flavored protein drinks on the market.
Q. Dear Fitz, I know that most people are trying to lose weight, but I am trying to gain. Gain muscle, that is. I am going to the gym three to four times per week. I'm using the weight machines there, but It doesn't seem like I am gaining any muscle. Could you give me some advice? What types of healthy food should I eat? Should I be doing more reps with less weight or fewer reps with more weight? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lea Rettig

A. Hey Lea, your question is superb, and the answer thank goodness is quite simple. Strength training should be challenging. Funny enough, my clients always seemed shocked and follow up that feeling of shock by giving me dirty looks when I pass them the dumbbell I'd like them to lift. Along with that dirty look, I receive chronic cries of, "Fitz! That's heavy!" Well, yes. Yes it is. The purpose of strength training is to get stronger, and yes ... build muscle. If I were to give them weights they could already lift comfortably ... they wouldn't be getting any stronger!

As long as the proper amount of hormones are released by your thyroid, everything is as cool as school and your system function remains status quo. But sometimes your thyroid decides to become a bit derelict in its duties and fails to produce enough hormones, resulting in the disruption of the balance of chemical reactions in your body. This condition is known as hypothyroidism.

This problem -- even if the thyroid is only mildly underactive -- is certainly worth paying attention to. A study published in the American Journal of Medicine suggests that even a slight aberration in the activity of the thyroid can raise the risk of heart disease by as much as 65 percent. If you or someone you know is showing signs and symptoms of what may be an underactive thyroid, speak to a doctor about having a blood test done.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask Fitz!
Q. Fitzy. I work out a few times a week and eat pretty well, but "six-pack" abs have always escaped me. I do plenty of crunches, but nothing seems to bring me even close to the abs I see on the cover of Men's Health magazine. What is the secret to it? Chase

A. Ahhhh Chase. The elusive six pack. Doesn't every body wish for that? Yes ... almost everybody does. Very few actually achieve it, though. This is the deal Chase, the "secret," if you will. If you want to look like an athlete, you're going to have to behave like an athlete. Train ridiculously hard and eat ridiculously well. Six-pack abs are a sign of elite fitness for sure, and you're probably not going to earn them working out a "few times a week and eating pretty well."

Before I go any further though, let me tell you how I feel about yogurt. I like it, but only if I feel like I'm getting a high in calcium, low in sugar, legitimately fruit-filled snack. Now, there is always yogurt stacked up in my fridge, because I have two little children. But, rarely do I even open up a cup for myself. Not that I would ever buy my babies anything "bad"... cause I don't. But I regularly expect perfection of the things I put in my mouth. I'm simply not willing to waste 100 calories on a teeny cup of yogurt. I'd rather have two big pieces of fruit.

So! I was thrilled instantly by the calorie count on Dannon's new Light & Fit 0% Plus Yogurt. Each cup boasts only 50 or 60 calories, depending on the flavor. That I can do! The fruity varieties are also full of real fruit chunks. Fresh and healthy fruit chunks, not the icky stuff dumped in from a can. On top of all that, each flavor has proven to be delicious to both my children and me, and then a few of my personal training clients as well.

Before you go give Dannon's Light & Fit 0% Plus Yogurt a try, I encourage you to do a side-by-side comparison of it's nutritional content versus that of other yogurts. I did this a few days ago and couldn't find anything as good. This is the type of thing you want to put in your fridge if you're trying to lose weight. It's a great fix for your sweet tooth, while providing a decent amount of protein, calcium, vitamin D and other important nutrients.
